Auto Biography: An A–Z Exposé of Cars is an absolute delight for any car enthusiast and Matt Watson delivers exactly what you'd hope for: a blend of sharp automotive insight, personal storytelling and the unmistakable humour he’s known for.

What makes this book stand out is Watson’s candid exploration of each major car brand. From long‑established giants to more niche manufacturers. He breaks down what he genuinely loves (and sometimes hates) about them. His commentary feels refreshingly honest, often witty and always grounded in real experience. Whether he’s praising a clever bit of engineering or calling out a brand’s questionable design choices, his opinions remain compelling and thoroughly entertaining.

Alongside the A-Z car deep‑dives, Watson opens up about his early life and how his passion for cars first took hold. These personal anecdotes add warmth and depth, turning the book from a simple automotive guide into a heartfelt story about growing up with a fascination for all things on four wheels. It’s not just a book about cars, it’s a book about identity, passion and the path that leads us to where we are.

His career journey is another highlight. Watson describes his time at Autocar, where he honed his craft and established himself in the motoring world, before eventually moving to Carwow, the platform where many fans discovered him. The behind‑the‑scenes look at his evolving career gives readers a new appreciation for the expertise behind his reviews and videos.

Ultimately, Auto Biography succeeds because it blends technical knowledge with personality. It’s thoughtful without being heavy, funny without being flippant, and informative without ever dragging. For me, it was an easy 5/5 stars.

If you love cars, storytelling or simply enjoy Matt Watson’s style, this book is an absolute must read.

I waited until this book was in the Black Friday sale on Amazon because I thought it was going to be one of those typical ‘Christmas books’ that ‘celebs’ release to make a buck at this time of year like Clarkson does with his yearly farm books. However this was a surprise. It’s an A - Z of car manufacturers but Mat actually comes across as a really good writer and journalist. His style of writing is a bit like Richard Porter of Evo magazine which is no bad thing. This book took no time to read at all. If you’re into cars, buy this.
