I went to college with Shelby, and my children have also had the privilege of hearing him speak at ministry events they’ve been part of — so I may be a little biased. That said, this book truly stands on its own.

Why We Are Feeling Lonely is a thoughtful read, especially for those in late high school through their mid-to-late twenties. Shelby does an excellent job guiding readers beyond simply acknowledging loneliness and instead digging into the deeper why behind it. He doesn’t minimize the struggle or offer cliché solutions. Instead, he validates the experience while thoughtfully pointing readers toward the importance of intentional, meaningful community.

What I especially appreciate is how he encourages self-reflection. He challenges readers to step toward vulnerability and connection. And take time to analyze and answer questions after each chapter. I recommend reading and not listening so you can take the time to answer the questions.

This is a compassionate, Jesus-centered, and practical book for anyone navigating seasons of loneliness. I would particularly recommend it to young adults who are transitioning into new stages of life or anyone searching for belonging and purpose.

A meaningful and encouraging read.
