Written Literacy Features of Three Puerto Rican Family Networks in Chicago: An Ethnographic Study

Rate this book
An ethnographic study of the literacy experiences of three Chicago Puerto Rican high school students, focusing both on their school and family experiences. Del Valle (writing, literature, and fiction, Columbia College), who draws insight from his experience growing up in Chicago's Puerto Rican community, attempts to weigh the influence not only of various literacy programs in the schools, but also to examine the role of cultural oral traditions and the literacy practices of parents and other relatives. Although the work does not proceed beyond the descriptive, a final chapter ruminates on questions raised for further study. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
