Sebastian Laurent is London’s golden heir by day and the city’s whispered myth by night, a bow in his hands and justice in his sights. Cameras love him, courtiers fear him, and the streets answer when he moves. He was raised to smile for the throne, but the truth lives in the shadows he patrols, where velvet turns to grit and every heartbeat tastes like risk.
Viktor Volkov is the Sentinels’ most disciplined protector, ex-military, surgical focus, no mistakes. He reads rooms like battlefields and people like dossiers. Keeping the reckless prince alive should be tighten the perimeter, control the variables, never get close. Then Sebastian smiles like a dare, and distance becomes the one rule he cannot keep.
Ambushes on the motorcade, a gala that curdles, threats blooming inside Laurentia Palace—each strike drags them closer. Proximity becomes a weapon. Sparring turns breathless. Stolen minutes behind guarded doors taste like confession. Viktor’s control collides with Sebastian’s fire, and protection sharpens into a vow neither man is trained to survive.
Someone inside the court is pulling strings. Paparazzi lenses glitter like rifle scopes. Allies feel like traps. The next attack could arrive in smoke or champagne. To outlast the rot and the puppeteer behind it, they have to choose each other, blade to bow, body to body, again and again, even when love feels like the riskiest mission of all.
Dark royal intrigue, knife-edge chemistry, and a bodyguard who would burn the world to save his prince.
Greyson Vale is an exciting new voice in gay romance fiction. With a talent for crafting swoon-worthy love stories filled with crackling chemistry, Greyson's novels explore the complexities of modern gay relationships and the search for lasting connection.
Another story by Greyson that I thoroughly enjoyed. The mixture of suspense, romance, and very good spice makes his writing style so recognizable! It is very exciting how he incorporate London and his (fantasy) royal family into the story! I love this city, so I was very taken with it! Sebastian is a broken prince who tries to combat the emptiness and guilt he has carried within him since his mother's death with vigilante justice. And Viktor, the bodyguard with a hard shell but a soft core. His Russian accent is to die for 😳❤️🔥! He's the kind of protector you wish you had. Even though there are many obstacles preventing them from being together, they can't let go of each other; their attraction is strong and full of fire! Together they fight for justice and a future together. They carry their burdens together and help each other heal! I also loved the aspect of the found family very much, and that I got to meet characters from previous stories again!
Full on porn, so if that is your thing, you will like this book. If you want the sex to actually mean something and be part of the plot, then I suggest looking elsewhere. That’s what I’m doing.
*head scratch* What, pray tell, have I just finished? Well, finished is a strong word considering how much I skimmed over but... what is this?
There is some solid writing, several interesting characters, plenty of action, an overarching mystery to solve... and sex. Kinky, unexpected, frequent sex all throughout.
It feels like someone took a very dark and serious drama about a prince falling for his bodyguard and replaced the deeper political scenes with some... lottery-style kink. I don't even consider this spoiler because it touches on those weird, sex bits and not the actual plot of the book and it feels like a fair warning to anyone who's considering reading this: the bodyguard has sex with the king before he commits to the prince. Like, what? It's not that such a situation could not be... interesting? But putting this level of porn-level kinky sex into a book that is otherwise taking itself so seriously???? What it happening here? I am not opposed to the sharing and partner swapping, it just felt SUPER out of place and it realy, really wasn't connected to anything else. The bodyguard has chemistry with the prince, he meets the king wandering the grounds, they get naked, get interupted by the chief inspector who, without a word, joins the fun. The king has a sex dungeon. They do filthy things together, least of which os not using any protection. Some pages later, the bodyguard sleeps with his son and since this is romance, the two of them fall in love. Don't worry, the disconnect doesn't end here and is fair the prince as well. He has a physical and has sex with the doctor. If you're thinking prostate exam, yup, you are right. I think my brain is still processing the sudden changes from the actual plot into these little interludes. After the bodyguard and the prince start a... sutationship that both know is going to be more, they have sex with a random guard we never saw before and never see after, in a scene that is very similar to the sex scene with the king. And let's not forget the best friend (of the boydyguard) whom we did meet at the very beginning of the book but that was frotting after they wrestled so that was actually the only scene that involved orgasms that actually made sense in the context of everything else. He is included in one naked scene towards the end. And besides all other aspects that don't make sense, the thing that kept tripping me up is the language. As in, what they said during said unexpected scenes. Every temporary bedpartner talked dirty with... commitment? Like, the whole possessive "you are mine/ours, you were made for this"??? What? I didn't mind the fact they were keeping things... let's say, sensual and caring. Some books go the whole crude and forceful and these sex scenes kept things... relatively gentle in nature, there were kisses and care besides the filth. It's not that you can't have very somber, dramatic plot while including kinky sex, it's the way these two aspects were integrated that caused... disconnection between me and the plot. Like whatever happens behind closed doors never happened after the scene is finished.
Anyway, if you like kinky sex with your political drama and are a fan of Arrow, you sure will like this one. I am very much in the middle: the good ideas were there, the romance was believable and solid, it's everything else that filled waaaaay too many extra pages that keep this book from reaching its more serious potential.
Opening with an ambush this thriller is gripping, fascinating even. The latter is the only word I can conjure to describe the pull that this story had on me. I was fascinated and intrigued by where the story was going to go. To open with an assassination and the death of a parent is tough but it is necessary to set the scene, it's a prologue, the main story opening eighteen years after the first events, by which time a lot has changed.
It was Sebastian Laurent, his mother and father, queen and king, who were ambushed and his mother who was killed. Eighteen years later they have not forgotten her and Sebastian has made himself into a mythical figure, one who tries to take down the enemy single-handed. But the enemy is getting closer and his father is concerned. He needs new security, his son needs a new bodyguard. Viktor Volkov takes on the role, reluctantly.
Viktor is the most disciplined if the Sentinels. He is ex-military, has a laser focus and makes no mistakes. The moment he arrives at the palace he finds weaknesses and a challenging young man to be protected. He doesn't see complications in keeping the prince safe but it seems he may have underestimated the prince. With attacks coming inside as well as outside the palace Viktor has to work even harder to keep Sebastian safe but the prince is testing him every step of the way, teasing and tempting, control and fire collide with bursts of flame and passion. They have to choose one another, stand side-by-side to face the enemy and be extremely vigilant once it appears the enemy could be within the palace itself.
A fiercely protective bodyguard will always do their job well. A bodyguard in love would burn the world to save his prince. This story is explicit, not only in the romantic sense but with violence too. Greyson Vale knows how to write with intention and passion, words are not used superfluously, attention to detail is key and nothing about the story is gratuitous. Every part of the plot, every aspect of the characters is intentional, purposeful. This story is powerful and incredibly addictive. I am already curious for book 2.

Obsidian is a thrilling and emotional ride that masterfully blends dark royal intrigue with a slow-burn, explosive romance. This book delivers exactly what it promises: a brooding, vigilante prince and the disciplined bodyguard sworn to protect him.
Sebastian, London's golden heir, is a beautifully complex character. Haunted by a past tragedy, his public charm hides a fierce desire to protect his city and a deep-seated vulnerability that completely won me over. Viktor, the ex-military Sentinel, is his perfect match, all controlled strength and quiet intensity, battling his own demons. The chemistry between them is electric from their very first head-butting encounter, evolving from professional tension into something breathless and all-consuming.
The plot is a gripping mystery, filled with courtly betrayal and escalating danger that kept me guessing. While the romance is central and deliciously spicy, the heart of this story lies in its raw emotional core. The moments of vulnerability between Sebastian and Viktor, Sebastian's touching relationships with his father and his people, and the themes of grief, duty, and healing are what truly make this book shine. If you love protective bodyguards, tortured heroes finding solace in each other, and power couples who would burn the world for one another, Obsidian is an absolute must-read. A fantastic rollercoaster.
This book swept me up from the very first chapter and refused to let go. The mix of royal intrigue, covert violence, and simmering attraction creates a taut, cinematic story that’s impossible to step away from. Sebastian, golden heir by day, urban legend by night is a brilliantly layered character, the sort who hides grief and grit beneath charm and precision. Opposite him, Viktor Volkov is every inch the disciplined protector, all sharp instincts and unshakeable control… until Sebastian shatters the distance between them.
The political tension and escalating threats inside Laurentia Palace kept me guessing throughout. Every gala, corridor, and ambush feels laden with danger, and the sense that someone within the court is pulling strings adds a delicious paranoia to the plot. The chemistry between Sebastian and Viktor tightens with every encounter, equal parts frustration, heat, and inevitability and their shift from reluctant partnership to something deeper is handled with compelling restraint.
Dark, elegant, and gorgeously intense, this story balances high-stakes action with a romance that burns slow but hot. A gripping start to what promises to be an addictive series, and I’m already eager for the next chapter in their war-torn, glittering world.

From the first chapter onward, I was completely engrossed in this book. A gripping, dramatic tale that demands your full attention, with elements of royal intrigue, clandestine bloodshed, and building desire. Daytime golden heir and nighttime urban legend Sebastian is the multi-faceted type of man who skillfully conceals his pain and roughness beneath an air of precision and charisma. Viktor Volkov, on the other hand, embodies the epitome of a trained protector—a man with keen reflexes and unwavering control— until Sebastian breaks through their barrier. I was never sure what was going to happen next due to the mounting political tension and dangers within Laurentia Palace. The exquisite unease is heightened by the feeling that someone within the court is manipulating strings, which makes every gala, corridor, and ambush feel packed with peril. Sebastian and Viktor's chemistry grows stronger with each meeting; they move deftly from hesitant partnership to something more serious, and the intensity of their emotions is palpable. The narrative deftly weaves high-stakes action with a slow-burning romance, making it dark, beautiful, and gorgeously intense. An exciting beginning to a captivating book; I can hardly wait for more adventures in their brilliant, war-torn world.

This book reminded me exactly why I love Greyson’s stories so much. The perfect mix of action and dirty, depraved love stories, combined with his poetic writing style, pulls you right into the middle of the story; it’s impossible to put down. 🖤 And Viktor and Sebastian… just so hot. Viktor, the cold, disciplined Russian we first met in The Beast’s Broken Angel, stole my heart back then, and he does it again here. It’s amazing how Greyson makes Viktor’s Russian accent come alive in my head just by leaving out a few vowels… I was swooning the whole time. 🥰 Sebastian is the crown prince and Viktor’s complete opposite. Kind, caring, and always thinking of others, yet fighting his own demons born from his missions in the London underground. Together, they’re like fire and ice: Sebastian melts Viktor’s icy exterior, while Viktor tempers Sebastian’s fiery temperament. Watching them heal each other, grow together, and face every danger side by side was just everything. And oh my gosh, seeing Noah, Adrian, Luka, and Ash again was such a treat! 💛 It felt like coming home to characters I love.
Exactly what I would expect from Greyson Vale, dark and gritty right from page one. Rainswept streets of London and a rebellion group launches a brutal night attack on the royal motorcade, their purpose. kill the Queen to weaken the Monarchy. Her 13 year old son crouches at her bloody side. Eighteen years later, the Monarchy stands but is under attack and the Crown Prince by night is a masked vigilante. After numerous recent attempts on his life as Prince, the King brings in a rigid bodyguard. The sex scenes are heavy with D/s overtones, the King as involved as the Prince. If you like Greyson’s Hellbound and Hollow series you will love this one. Obsidian is book one in the Sentinel Code Series. Bring it on!
The Prince proves hard to resist in this forced proximity romance. Sebastian lost his mother to violence at 13 and has spent the past 18 years secretly meeting out justice. Now attempts are being made on his life. The King hires a bodyguard, Viktor, to protect his son. Viktor and Sebastian are in many ways the same and as a result grate on each other. Despite their animosity they are also just what the other needs, in every aspect that matters. Discovering the rot within the palace stings and cutting it out is even more difficult, but working together brings Viktor and Sebastian together in a very steamy way. It will be interesting to see how these two fit into the next in the series.

I typically really love this authors, writing style, and the way they write their characters. The characters in their books have fantastic chemistry. Sebastian and Viktor were amazing and I loved the push and pull that happened between them. The banter was also just phenomenal. I can’t wait to see what else this author writes.

It was hard for me to rate this, it is more of a 2 stars for me but since I did finish it I gave it 1 more star. It is way to pornish, everyone sleeps with everyone but we re supposed to believe the MC love eachother. What the heck was that porn scene with the King?! There was no need for that what so ever, the bodyguard sleeping with both father and son but no acknowledgement of it, the author treats it like it never happened, like it is perfectly fine. The constant guilt narrative was annoying and tiresome, at every chapter someone was whining ab "not protecting a loved one" "failing a loved one" bla bla, all of them were yapping the same thing even if they just finished telling the other "it was not your fault".

It's been awhile since I have read a long book, but the story was intriguing and interesting enough to hold my ADHD brain hostage. I almost got mad that I had to adult cause I was itching so bad to see what happens next. Sebastian was no prissy little spoiled prince and it made me happy. He was a bad arse prince who cares deeply for his people. Viktor was a stoic man who was afraid of caring, but I am glad he finally let himself fall for our charming prince. The spicy scenes were quite detailed and thorough. I needed a bucket of cold water and a fan. The story was simple yet was so good to get lost in.
Obsidian is the first book in The Sentinel Code series. It is part of the same universe in which the author's latest novels have been developed, as characters we already know appear.
This is the book about Viktor, who is hired by a king, supposedly from England, where the action is set, to be the bodyguard of his son, Sebastian.
You'll find action, spicy scenes—some of which I had to skip because they're not for me. Once again, the problem is me. And revenge.
This isn't how modern monarchies in Europe work, but, I'm not going to get picky about a work of fiction.
+ i want to thank the author for the ARC. This is my voluntary and honest opinion+
This is book 1 of The Sentinel Code series and I anxiously await more!
The characters were so compelling and chaotic and perfectly matched. World building was excellent and expertly drawn. The plot was intriguing, exciting, action packed, suspenseful and fast paced. Luv'd everything about this book! Cannot wait for more of this series. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

Do yourself a favor and READ the synopsis and tw’s - no one should be surprised after that. Anyway…
Gahhhh!!! Greyson!! You’ve done it again! This is the slowest burn of slow burns I’ve read from them. It’s deliciously full of push and pull between viktor and Sebastian. Its got an edge or dark that kept me hooked from the jump! Another stunning read! I have never been so glad to stumble on an author like I have with G.V - I’ve enjoyed every single book I’ve read-
Wow, talk about an intensely moving story. Betrayal, intrigue, murder, death, and justice. Viktor and Sebastian went through the whole gamut. While experiences make you who you are, there are some that shouldn’t have to be endured. The King broke my heart with his fears and sadness, for his son, for his past failures, and his hopes for the future.

Wow, Greyson's writing has a way of sucking me in so all I want to do is keep reading until I get to the end. Sebastian and Viktor's story is dark, full of love and lust, light and dark, out in the glare of the spotlights and alone in the shadows. Violent, sizzling and erotic, this will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Loved Sebastian and Viktor. This was really good, I loved the plot and the characters, but again this author seriously has a thing for sex that’s not just the mc’s. Very unnecessary in my opinion, we don’t need our mc’s having sex with random other characters nor all the group sex. This is the second unrelated book I’ve read by this author and it seems to be a habit. I just like seeing the mc’s being intimate with each other. The only scene that maybe fit was with Dom.
Wow, I'm kind of speechless, this was so good. The action of this book flowed like nothing I've read before. Viktor is surprisingly so sweet and the spice is so well done, Dom👀. Ugh Viktor in chapter 20😭. I love how the father/son relationship and how Sebastian is supported! And that twist I screamed and did not see that coming! I was so excited for Viktors book and man it did not disappoint🤍
Amazing story of Sebastian Laurent, heir to the throne and Viktor Volkov, his bodyguard. The relationship between these two is HOT, in more ways than one. From palace to dirty streets these two burn everything they touch. Couldn't put it down, had to wear oven mitts.
This book had me at the first chapter it was thrilling read that has slow burn and thrills that keep you intrigued. This book has danger and betrayal that keeps you guessing.

It took some time to finish this but it was worth it. Sebastian and Viktor love is tested a lot but they prevail even tho not unharmed. Loved the royal mystery and treason woven into this story and the unwavering found family standing at their side.
Think assassins creed with more nudity.
On a not so serious note: I sometimes wonder if Greyson vale has like a slot prompt machine with names and positions and locations on it that he consults when there is that kind of chapter coming up. Like a wheel of fortune. Or maybe it’s like game of clue. „the king in the garden by the bodyguard with rope“.
