This was a highly entertaining and unflinchingly honest book by Irish journalist Carl Kinsella. Having already been familiar with his work through his articles on TheJournal.ie, where I make sure to read his Surrealing in the Years column every Saturday, I was delighted to find that his wit and sharp observations carried over from his column into this collection of essays. Sometimes acerbic, sometimes bleak, often funny and always candid, Carl's writing both amused and moved me. I found myself alternately laughing at his hilarious turns of phrase and feeling emotional at his courageous vulnerability, often on the same page. I look forward to reading more from him in the future.
I enjoy Carl's journalism and he has a great way with witty and insightful analogies. The essays in the book often have a common thread that runs through them, and while sometimes tangents take you on a side track you didn't expect, the journey is worth the travelling.
