Here is my review for Evolve by Hetty Waite

Oh wow! This was such an exciting, intense second book but it was perfectly written with the tension and suspicion still there. When the group makes it to Amex, they can’t help but notice the difference between there and Galex. Cara has to try and relinquish her control instincts but it all seems to be too perfect at Amex and what is it with the curfew each night? Why can’t they go out in the dark? And to her, they didn’t give a good enough reason. So she is naturally suspicious which causes arguments between Brown and herself. He likes that it is gender neutral and there are no ‘X’ or ‘Y’ anymore. ‘Y’ can get treated against the virus which Brown is all for, he just needs Cara to play ball so they can stay. They are all happy with their job assignments except for Cara who is a nursery nurse and teacher. This seems to completely tire her out so she aches from head to toe each day and she really doesn’t have the patience for it, she feels sidelined and hardly gets to spend time with Xyla as everyone at nursery wants to be with her. What is really going on at Amex? Is Myla still alive and looking for revenge? I really loved reading this book and think it is a great addition to the series. It held my attention all the way through and I just couldn’t put it down as I needed to know what happened next as there was so much going on. It was written almost in a diary format and multiple points of view with each chapter having someone’s name at the beginning. I really like this type of story format and I sometimes find it easier to read a book that is told this way. It was brilliantly written, superbly plotted and excellently thought out. The characters were interesting and seem real plus they interacted together. I really liked some scenes that were written in the book. I thought the book was very descriptively written and described everything really well. As I was reading this story, I could visualise it in my mind at the same time and it would make for a really interesting TV programme! I absolutely love the storyline and how it is panning out. I await in anticipation for the next book in the series.

We again follow Cara, Brown, their baby Xyla and their stalwart friends as they search for the fabled city of Amex, where everyone is equal, regardless of gender. But the threat of Myla finding them is always with them. Having finally found the city, it appears to be everything they dreamed of, and more. But is it real? Assigned new jobs, they settle into their new way of life, and Brown is ecstatic about being treated as a real person, not just a servile Y. But with all its seeming normalcy, it’s a life where there is a securely locked laboratory and a curfew each evening. Cara, naturally suspicious, wonders if something more sinister is going on and sets out to find out what it is. This causes angst between her and Brown. What she discovers changes everything. Throw into the mix the deadly arrival of her evil sister Myla, and you have a rollicking sequel. I don’t want to give away any details, but it’s a roller coaster of emotions, questions about rights, about roles, lots of fabulous fights, and an incredible storyline. When is the third book coming out?

Following on from the first book, Cara, husband Brown and baby Xyla, are looking to start a new life in Amex, with their crew. They pick up straggler Pan along the way, but Cara is suspicious.
This is a bit fantasy, a bit horror, featuring monstrous creatures that mutate, or evolve as the title suggests. There was the threat of a pandemic that affected just those with a Y chromosome which is still out there too.
I like the look at gender, identity and the importance or not. I like the way the author has turned it on its head and the women are the powerful beings.
Myla, Cara's sister, is also still out there and shes angry! She's out for revenge. This adds another level of threat and a rather thrilling conclusion.
The book is left open to a third which im thrilled about. This is not my normal sort of read but I couldnt read it quick enough and couldnt put it down.

Picking up the story of Cara, Brown and their baby Xyla and their friends, we find the group searching for Amex. Amex is a city where everyone is equal, regardless of gender. Hoping to build a new life away from Cara‘s evil sister Myla. However, even this idyllic place has its secrets. The book is a bit of a mix of genres but it works very well. The main theme seems to be about gender and identity and how much they actually matter. The book showcases a world where women are the stronger of the sexes. I really liked the constant threat of Cara‘s sister finding them and destroying their new lives. The ending sets us up for the next book nicely.
