3 Found Fonts: An Exploration

Rate this book
The three typefaces explored in this book all vary in their degree of foundness. As Roland Barthes texts are 'a tissue of quotations drawn from the innumerable centres of culture.' A similar system of quotation and reinvention exists when designing a typeface. One of Jake Tilson's aims in creating 3 Found Fonts was to examine their origins, context and influence on their surroundings. He researched, reconstructed and extended each typeface. An architectural methodology assisted this process by utilising typographical precedents as a guide and to suggest a solution for missing characters. This use of precedents and found materials and the nature of design authorship and copyright are also explored in the book.
