She was promised a future. She woke up fighting for her life.
Eliana Castillo was on the brink of a new beginning--an engagement to the heir of a powerful crime family. Then darkness. She wakes battered, bloodied and freezing in the woods of Detroit Lakes, with no memory of what took place or why someone wanted her dead.
Investigators Jon and Serena Frederick uncover a web of secrets, lies, and buried loyalties that span from mafia ties to small-town vendettas. The deeper they dive, the darker the possibilities--and the more urgent it becomes to recover Eliana's memories.
Loved this one! It was so hard to put down. This was possibly my favorite Frank Weber true crime book yet! Looking forward to the next book to be released!
In his crime novels, you know you’re going to read about a crime. You are going to meet individuals connected with the crime. You will meet a professional team of investigators that will educate you about forensic techniques and new tools, including tracing cellphones, where electric vehicles have been recharged, and ID techniques that are as innovative as they come. All of this is present in HEARTBREAK HOLLOW, plus more. HEARTBREAK HOLLOW tells the story of a crime perpetrated on a young lady. Despite her serious injuries, she survives to work with Weber’s investigator Jon Frederick to find her assailants and bring them to justice. The plot twists and turns in a world of a crime family, in small town rumors, alliances that may or may not benefit the situation, and clever notions of following the leads of the crime that allow HEARTBREAK HOLLOW to close with a flourish. The reader will meet Eliana, the victim. The perps include a rather doltish man, a family with nefarious connections in a complicated way, a best friend who is an expert at betrayal, and others who weave into the story in ways that may surprise the reader. All the while, the characters move throughout central Minnesota and points northeast and northwest on the long trail to the finish of the story. Along the way, Weber does a fine job of detailing Inspector Frederick’s family life. The reader sees how this case affects the Frederick family, and what that family is already facing as the story opens. Weber achieves a fine balance between each storyline – the investigation of the crime, and the effects this crime has on the Frederick family, who already have quite a load on their plate. This balance gives the novel a flavor of intense forensic work, family life, some sobering moments, and a sense of humor that will delight the reader. In the end, the reader will find that HEARTBREAK HOLLOW demonstrates a solid balance between the crime itself, the techniques employed by the investigators, and the Frederick family as if it were a finely tuned Swiss watch that keeps a steady pace and never wastes a second.
