Burn: Book 3 of the Apex Society Trilogy

Rate this book
Every reckoning ends in ash.

Sgt. Troy Wilder thought he’d finally found peace—until Apex came for blood.

A battle-hardened cop and former soldier, Troy has spent his life protecting others. Control, discipline, and order have always been his armor. But when a terrified woman carrying a newborn stumbles into his world, everything he believes about protection—and failure—begins to unravel.

Gia fled a life of polished brutality with nothing but instinct to guide her. Shaking, desperate, and holding a baby that isn’t hers, she runs toward the first place that feels even remotely safe. The moment Troy finds her, his intensity steadies her. His promise to protect her feels like the first truth she’s ever been given.

But Troy's tight control is a razor's edge. A single miscalculation hands Gia back to the monster Troy swore to shield her from—triggering a chain reaction neither of them can stop. With everything spiraling out of control, Troy is forced to face the truth he’s always control is an illusion, and a reckoning may cost him everything.

The fallout is explosive—dragging them into shattered loyalties that reach far beyond small-town lines and into the highest levels of political power.

Because the Apex Society doesn’t seek justice.
It demands annihilation.

Okay, listen. this book absolutely torched my weekend in the best possible way. Rhone nailed the ending of the trilogy like a champ — stuck the landing, lit the fireworks, dropped the mic, all of it.

What I loved most? Rhone handles some rough, heavy topics with a beautifully delicate touch. Nothing is glamorized, nothing is tossed in for shock value. It’s human, it’s raw, it’s carefully held. And at the same time? The story never slows down. They give you a full cast of characters who are so layered you could peel them like emotional onions.

And the way BURN ties back into books 1 and 2? Chef’s kiss.
It doesn’t just reference them — it weaves them in, creating this full-circle, “I’m-in-too-deep-now” reading experience that had me flipping pages like I was training for a speed-reading competition. If you read Gaslight and Matchstrike, every breadcrumb pays off. Every thread matters. It’s. So. Satisfying.

Because ohhhh the spice. 🔥
The spicy scenes were HAWT, but not in that “gratuitous for the sake of it” way. They hit because they’re tied directly to the character arcs — trust, dominance, vulnerability, healing, connection. It’s intimate, it’s earned, and it feels real. Still very much clutching my pearls though...don’t get me wrong.

And I have to shout out Rhone’s writing. Each hero in this trilogy feels distinct — Chase, Sam, and now Troy. Troy’s voice is so uniquely him that you could hand me a random page and I’d know instantly which book I was in. He’s grittier, quieter, sharper around the edges… and yet still warm in that “oh no, I’m falling for this damaged beast too” way.

Bottom line?
This finale gave me everything I wanted and then threw in feelings I didn’t even know I ordered. Emotional depth? Check. Thrilling stakes? Check. Villains I truly hated, yes please. Healing, heartache, spice, and that slow-burn “I can’t put this down” energy? Double check.

If you’re on the fence about the trilogy — hop off, grab book 1, and prepare to be wrecked, rebuilt, and wildly satisfied.
