The world ended in silence. The fight for what’s left will not.
Ten months after the collapse, teenager Annie’s world has shattered, and with it, everything she once believed about monsters. They don’t always lurk in shadows. Sometimes they wear uniforms. Sometimes they wear the faces of those you love.
In the ruins of Sydney, Annie finds an unlikely ally in Jude—a half-infected boy marked by virus and twisted science. His strange, dangerous abilities make him both a threat and their best hope. But the line between abomination and saviour is thinner than either imagined.
Haunted by what was done to him, Jude carries scars deeper than flesh. Meanwhile, Annie’s younger brother, Lucas, remains a prisoner, infected and altered. If she doesn’t reach him soon, Lucas will face the same fate that nearly destroyed Jude—experiments that don’t just scar flesh but twist what it means to be human.
As secrets unravel and the origin of the virus comes to light, Jude learns a devastating his connection to the outbreak is deeper, darker, and far more personal than he ever imagined.
Together, Annie and Jude race through a city where every shadow hides a threat. When they are torn apart, survival becomes more than a mission—it becomes a to endure, to protect, and to bring each other back from whatever hell awaits.
From the shattered edges of the Fractured Reality universe comes a story of desperate hope and fierce loyalty—because in a world this ruined, some things are lost forever. But some are worth risking everything to save.
I was already invested in this world after the Fractured Reality series, and knew I wanted to see what Annie and Jude's adventures would be. This explores the same brutal dystopian world in a spin off, as they hunt for Annie's stolen brother, and try to understand the virus and its effects on Jude. It's a vivid journey that confronts Jude's remaining humanity, his instincts to protect Annie, and his need to understand what he's capable of with his changing DNA and abilities. Annie is torn between her growing connection to Jude, her need to save her brother, and the push she has to prove herself. I loved Annie's attitude, she is brave yet naive and resists being told what to do, but has the drive to survive and adapt. I liked that they both faced their own challenges, but had the drive to keep going and find each other. They faced heartbreaking conflicts, found people that needed them, and endure raw and harrowing months of trauma. This is a new favourite series and I'm excited for book 2.
Big thanks to Magda and Kelsey from Book Publicity Services for sending us a copy to read and review. I don’t think any of us can say we never think of what if. It’s the possibilities of how our lives, political systems and humanity as a whole could change from an event or a movement. Dystopian fiction allows our imagination through with the what ifs. Covid has changed the world and those that survived are in two camps, the hunters and the hunted. Death and destruction has left Sydney unrecognisable. Annie has survived and is desperate to save her brother. Those captured are infected with a virus to weaken and divide. Annie meets Jude who is infected and together becomes a united force. Loyalty and integrity create a bond and common goal. Adversity and capture will not thwart what they have. Jude suffers extreme cruelty and when his situation is borderline hopeless he has the help of an unlikely ally. Slipping into fantasy reminds us of history and dreadful plights that shows anything is possible. This is the first in the series and it leaves opportunity for both good and bad future outcomes for Annie and Jude.
This book is set in an apocalyptic world where COVID has become a deadly disease that turns those infected into a kind of zombie whose purpose is to spread the disease. We follow the young Annie and Jude - a fearless girl who is searching for her brother, and a boy who has been tortured, leaving him with supernatural powers that will later help him fight these beings. These young people will go through many difficulties, separations and unimaginable losses, but what binds them together will be stronger than anything else.
If you like dystopian universes, very similar to The Walking Dead or The Last of Us, this book is ideal for you.
The book is easy to read and very fluid, transporting the reader into the book and making us live every moment with these characters.
The epilogue left me super curious and full of questions, so I can't wait for the second book to be released!
Dawn in Ruins is the first book in a new series, belonging to the same universe as another series by the author - The Fractured Reality Series - so if you're curious, check out these books!
I recently finished watching The 100 and I’m both mad at myself for not finishing it when it was actively on tv, but also grateful because that last season was ROUGH! And then Dawn in Ruins came to me at the absolute best time!
This is a spinoff of a story I read a few months back by the same author. But here we got to experience Annie and Jude while they navigate this new world overwhelmed with VFPs after COVID changed everything, all while trying to save Annie’s brothers. This book would be better read in order after the first series for optimal understanding, however, it can be read as a standalone.
I was so invested in Annie and Jude in this book that I devoured these pages as I was reading them. I liked Annie’s sass and Jude’s mysterious demeanor. And while this is a YA read, it didn’t feel childish and was still enjoyable to read as an adult.
The storyline was always progressing and there was certainly never a dull moment. But there never is when every second is life or death. I loved how fearless and resilient these characters are. In their world, they technically have no choice other than taking the easy way out and succumbing to what is happening. But they choose to fight, to live, to survive.
Overall, this book was a quick and easy read. I really enjoyed the fluidity of the story, the natural progression of things, and how much I enjoyed these characters. And that epilogue left me wanting to know MORE! It’s safe to say I will keeping my eyes out for the best book!
Why am I still thinking about this book? Probably for the same reason I was up until 1am finishing it.
When I tell you this story had me fighting the urge to skim read so I could find out what happens… flipping pages like a 15yo flipping burgers at Macca’s on a Friday evening. I was hooked!
This is so well written, that you can devour it in a day, BUT it is not an easy read. This is as gritty, traumatic and dystopian as you can get. It is bleak. It is gut-wrenching. But at its very essence, it is about the connection between characters in this world, their resilience, their loyalty and their humanity.
If you like stories such as The Walking Dead and The Last of Us, this book is for you. If you want a dystopian set in Australia, then this book has got you! If you want an ACTUAL slow burn, this book is it….and I need the next instalment already please Magda!
Note, this is a spin off from The Fractured Reality series. There are references to the previous series, however a synopsis is seamlessly blended so that you can start this series as a standalone.
Thank you to Kelsey from Book Publicity Services and Magda Mitzi (author) for providing me with a copy to read in return for an honest review.
TW: virus infection, violence, abuse (mentioned off page), death (children)
Imagine if back in 2020 when COVID-19 was first going around, instead of getting flu like symptoms it instead turned you into zombie.
This book was a mash up of Zombies (minus the songs & fourth wall bits) x 28 Days Later set in desolate Sydney which I really enjoyed reading.
The only thing that I think the book needed is a reference at the chapter heading as to who's POV it is (Annie or Jude) with a timeline indicator (e.g. 4 months. From chapter 18 you can tell who's chapter it is but before then it goes between Annie & Jude which sometimes got a little confusing.
There are bits that you as an adult may get frustrated at but you gotta remember that the characters are teenagers who are having to adapt to a desolated environment and are having to grow up pretty quickly.
We see Annie (FMC) grow from an impatient teen who needs to save her brother to a young woman who has learned to slow down, listen and assess the situation. Her mission to rescue her little brother is still a priority but she learns that sometimes you need to let the storm pass in order to move forward.
Jude (MMC) tries to keep the little humanity that he has left despite being infected & taken prisoner by people (different groups) who clearly revel in being in power & taking advantage of it.
After narrowly escaping Cockatoo Island, Annie & Jude have one mission - rescue Annie's brother Lucas who was taken by the same people who experimented on Jude turning him into a half-infected / half-human.
Planning to travel North by boat, they make their way through a desolate Sydney to Jude's last place of residence to get prepared for their journey.
On the day they ship out, a massive storm hits turning over their boat & separating them.
16 months later they reunite under dire circumstances, find shelter & plan to go North like they originally planned to find & rescue Lucas.
I really enjoyed reading this story! Annie is strong but yet innocent. She shows determination and independence. Jude is protective and caring but also innocent in his feelings. He shows remorse but I would like to see how else he develops in the next book.
This is set in a world that has crashed after a virus has seeped through. I haven’t read the first series which may give more insight to how the world became like this but I felt you could still read this without the extra information. The story opens and describes it well so you understand what is happening. It does jump a bit between past and present to explain why Jude and Annie are in the situation they are in.
So many trials they both have to over come and I felt that there is going to be so much more that gets unwrapped in the next book.
I love the interaction between both of them and I can’t wait to read more of what happens.
Thank you so much to Magda and Kelsey from book publicity services, for sending me a copy to read and review.
This is the first book in a new series, set after the Fractured Reality series. It is set in an apocalyptic world where COVID led to the end of humanity, turning everyone it infected into zombie like creatures. Just like the first series, Dawn in ruins is addictive, impossible to put down. It's thought provoking and so well written.
Annie and Jude are such loveable characters, so well written. That, along with the well timed suspense and tension, makes it impossible to stop reading.
If you're looking for a well written dystopian read, that will leave you thinking, long after you finish, this is the book for you.
So this is the spin off series called Distorted Horizon of the Fractured Reality series. Again there is world building at the beginning which might imply a lack of control of pov - though I did nto find this the case.
This is slower and more character driver than the previous series and while I think the characters may be a bit younger the themes are more adult.
What happens to Jude simply wrecked me. My god! I wanted to jump in there and save him. And Annie! I wanted to punch her and hug her at the same time. The impulsiveness, the guilt, the regret. Both so innocent and then... not! And still there was hope at the end.
I can't wait to see what happens to these two. I am going straight to this authors website which is magdamizzi.com so that I can have updates on when the next book will be released. I need to know what happens to Annie and Jude.
Dawn In Ruins This year I’m trying to read more reads out of my comfort zone as this was unexpectedly so good
This is an Australian Post Apocalyptic Romance this is a great for fans of The Last of Us, The 100 and other end-of-the-world vibe books.
The book follows Annie and Jude, Annie’s brother is in danger and that motivates her and the desperate search she goes on. Jude was very mysterious. They both just want to survive, which made for a good book you just want to keep reading to find out what happens
4.5 "...what do you do when you can?" This is a great YA dystopian for fans of The Last of Us and other end-of-the-world vibe books. This is a world that threatens not just the body but the sense of humanity. I liked the first trilogy as well, but these characters (Annie and Jude) from book 2 are more adult and confident. High-stakes moves Annie not just because of her brother's life in danger, but also after understanding the secrets behind it all. They don't start as ideal partners. He resists her help and antagonizes her a lot, not wanting to call her Annie, but Annabella and Bella. She keeps correcting him, ahah. He's all: Obey. Be quiet. Be what you're told. But that's not how she words. Her past is filled with fingers pointing that she was never enough, not capable, so she won't take this from Jude. I like the wave of VFPs (zombies) attacking. They are well-written scenes with tension, page page-turning kind of book with also well-balanced slow moments. And it's easy to read, not too long, good-sized font. Jude is something more, filled with secrets, too. We start getting some hints that there's something different about him. Not all goals are completed in this first volume. So the journey continues. My only remark (personal preference that doesn't ruin the reading) is that I would like to see a paragraph break between switching Povs. The author uses hints of time and action, but I would still prefer some kind of break. I like how their relationship gets closer. This is another book that would make a great video game (I like them a lot).
An amazing spin-off that more than lives up to the original series. Dawn in Ruins expands the world in all the right ways, delivering fresh stakes and deeply engaging characters. What makes Dawn in Ruins stand out is that it’s not just another dystopian. Its about the characters: their guilt, grief, and that stubborn instinct to keep moving even when everything feels beyond fixing.
The dynamic between the protagonists is the core of the book. And the world building has a cinematic quality to it. I hope they make this one into a movie and I can't wait for the next book in the series.
A brutal, emotional young adult post-apocalyptic survival story from Australian author Magda Mizzi that blends dystopian danger, found family, and quiet, stubborn hope.
Set in a world destroyed by a mutated virus, Dawn in Ruin follows Annie, a young girl who has already lost almost everything and is driven by one thing only: not losing the last piece of her family too. Along the way, she teams up with Jude, a mysterious and broken boy who is no longer fully human after being used in horrific experiments.
This story is packed with: 🖤 High-stakes survival 🔥 Constant tension and danger 🧠 Moral dilemmas and impossible choices 💔 Trauma, guilt, and healing 🤍 And slow, powerful character growth
Both Annie and Jude are young, flawed, and incredibly human, and watching them grow, break, and rebuild themselves in such a cruel world is the heart of this book. The action scenes are intense, the world feels harsh and the emotional moments hit hard.
What really stands out is how character-driven this story is. It’s not just about surviving monsters, it’s about surviving loss, guilt, and hopelessness, and still choosing to keep going.
The ending doesn’t leave you on a cliffhanger, but it absolutely leaves you needing book two immediately.
✨ Perfect for readers who love YA dystopian, post-apocalyptic worlds, emotional journeys, and survival stories with heart.
This is a dystopian, post apocalyptic romance. Love zombies? This is for you! Set in Sydney Australia
Annie our FMC is tasked to find her brother who has been abducted and being experimented on. Much like our MMC Jude, who is half infected by the virus and has been experimented and altered himself. Annie doesn’t want her brother to have the same fate. They work together to find him and save him, this leads to a brewing romance.
If you love the walking dead or any zombies movies this book is definitely for you !
I went into Dawn In Ruins not really knowing what to expect, and it hooked me almost straight away. From the start, you’re dropped into this brutal, broken world through Annie’s eyes — she’s only fourteen, and ten months into whatever ended the world, she’s already been through more than most adults. It’s very much a zombie-apocalypse setup, but it doesn’t feel generic. It’s gritty, emotional, and grounded, especially with the story being set in Australia, which gives it a fresh edge.
What really worked for me was the characters. Annie is trying so hard to be brave in a world that keeps knocking her down, and that struggle feels real. Jude is such an interesting character too — half-infected, altered by science, dangerous but human — and the relationship between them adds a really nice layer of warmth to an otherwise bleak story. There’s a genuine romance here, but it never takes over; it just sits quietly alongside the chaos, which makes it hit harder.
There’s also this constant undercurrent of loss and urgency, especially with Annie’s brother Lucas, who’s been taken and altered in ways that are terrifying without being over-explained. The world-building is detailed but never heavy, and the book keeps reminding you that the real monsters aren’t always the infected. By the time I finished, I was genuinely glad to see there’s a sequel coming, because this feels like a story that’s only just getting started.
If you like apocalyptic stories with strong characters, emotional weight, and a bit of hope threaded through the darkness, this one’s well worth picking up.
This definitely gave me The Last of Us vibes — in the best way. If you enjoy zombie or post-apocalyptic stories where survival, loyalty, and humanity are at the core, this will feel familiar and comforting.
I really enjoyed the dystopian setting and the constant sense of danger. It’s gritty, emotional, and focused just as much on the people as it is on the world falling apart. The tension builds nicely, and the story kept me invested from start to finish.
Overall, a solid dystopian read that reminded me why I enjoy zombie-like stories so much. Not reinventing the genre, but definitely an engaging and enjoyable one.
Thank you so much to Kelsey from Book Publicity Services for sending me a copy of this book to enjoy. I really appreciated the opportunity to read and review it.
An apocalypse has just hit the world and there are only a handful of survivors in Australia. They journey across the continent to any form of life while battling threats around every turn. This will make your pulse race and keep you on your toes.
Are you after a true dystopian book? But not only that, a book that is set in Australia (Sydney to be exact) by an Australian indie author? Then Dawn in Ruins is for you?
After the Covid pandemic, some of the infected covid patients developed a deadly strain which turned them into VFP’s. After Annie & Jude escape the cage they were trapped in, Annie is desperate to find her brother Lucas. However, after a devastating turn of events, will that be possible?
I absolutely adored the setting for this book. Having lived in Sydney for 6 years as a teen, I could really connect with places. It made it feel a lot more real and you know, you don’t actually know if this could happen one day!
I really liked the dynamic between Annie & Jude. Annie is 14, lost way too much and has had to grow up too fast. Her growth throughout the book was so well done. Jude’s journey is absolutely freaking heartbreaking. What he’s had to endure is insane. I think this duo have the capabilities to be a powerhouse. My heart hurt so much for Hunter & Brian.
I think this book is marketed for 16 years and above making it YA. I do think it fits in to the YA genre but there are some bits that can be quite dark.
My only little nitpick would be is if a book has swearing it, I like it to be committed to. That’s just my personal preference.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story and think it’s a solid dystopian book. I’ll definitely be reading the next book when it’s out!
Thank you so much to Kelsey at Book Publicity Services & Magda Mizzi for a copy of this book to read!
Thank you to Magda and Kelsey from Book Publicity Services for the opportunity to read and review this book.
⭐️⭐️ ⭐️1/2 for Dawn in Ruins by Magda Mizzi, the first book in the Distorted Horizon series.
Set in the ruins of Sydney, Australia, Dawn in Ruins follows Annie and Jude after the world collapses in the aftermath of COVID and its deadly mutation, reminiscent of a Walking Dead style apocalypse. After a narrow escape from Cockatoo Island, Annie and Jude are driven by one main goal - saving Annie’s brother.
I really enjoyed this read, particularly Jude’s character. His selflessness and willingness to put others before himself made him incredibly likeable, which made the events later in the story all the more heartbreaking. Both Annie and Jude are well written, relatable characters, and I appreciated Annie’s growth toward the end. Especially when she begins prioritising Jude and his health over her single minded mission.
The epilogue was especially intriguing and left me eager to continue the series and see where their journey leads next.
Overall, this was a solid and engaging read. The writing is easy to follow and does a great job of immersing you in the world alongside the characters. One small suggestion would be to name chapters by character and include time indicators when the storyline splits, as the timeline does jump occasionally and this could help with clarity.
A good start to the series, and I’m definitely curious to see what comes next.
Dawn in Ruins (The Distorted Horizon #1) is an Australian dystopian read centred around a post apocalyptic Sydney after the COVID outbreak.
Firstly, thank you so much Magda & Kelsey from Book Publicity Services for sending me a copy of this!
With the FMC being only 14 through this book, it is very clearly marketed and targeted at the YA audience and done very well. Annie & Jude went through many dark and triggering moments together and I loved seeing their character growth from a more juvenile point of view - it really made you connect and reflect on what you would have done if this was you as a teen.
I also enjoyed that eat chapter seemed to switch between both POV which gave a really good insight into what all characters were feeling/seeing. This definitely provoked emotions in the best ways and I loved the imagery it provided!
Very much “the last of us” vibes! Definitely recommend.
As someone who adored the Fractured Reality series, I was thrilled to jump into this brand-new series that picks up right where that world left off. Even though it continues the timeline, most of the characters are new, with only one of the main characters included from the original trilogy.
I loved following Annie through the ruins of Sydney as she searches for her brother, Lucas, who’s been captured by a dangerous group. The sense of urgency and fear she feels is so real, however her determination never wanes, even when she’s terrified. Jude, the half-infected boy who becomes her unlikely partner, is such an interesting character. He was introduced in the last book, and their growing bond felt real and complicated among all the horror of their new world.
The story takes some brutal turns I wasn’t expecting. When tragedy rips Annie and Jude apart, the book becomes even more gripping. Jude’s imprisonment and torture were genuinely hard to read at times, but incredibly powerful. It showed just how much of his humanity he’s still fighting to hold onto. Annie’s side of the journey is equally intense, but their parallel struggles make the emotional payoff so strong.
Overall, Dawn in Ruins is a phenomenal, heart-wrenching start to this next chapter of this universe. It has all the emotion, danger, and character depth I loved from Fractured Reality, but with an even richer storyline. I’m already counting the days until the next book!
Divergent meets The Walking Dead in Magda Mizzi’s Dawn in Ruins. Reading this book brought me back to my middle school and high school days when I was reading all the dystopian series.
This dystopia takes place in a world post-COVID. The main characters are relatable through their hope, anxiety, and fear. This book ends on a major cliffhanger that makes me excited to continue the series.
My favorite quote from the book is, “Sometimes gratitude didn’t polishing. Sometimes it just needed space.”
This book discusses dark and heavy topics so be advised. There is a content warning in the author’s note.
This is book one in the YA Distorted Horizon series and I enjoyed The Tyranny of Tomorrow in the Fractured Reality series, so I already knew this one would be good. I like dystopian reads and so I was interested to see where this story went. The pace of this book was great and I was never feeling bored during their adventure. I enjoyed Annie and Jude as characters and I recommend this book if you enjoy dystopian reads.
I received Dawn in Ruins as a PR book/audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
First, let me address the audiobook narration. It was computer-generated, which is understandable for authors and publishers who can’t afford narrators. However, it was challenging to listen to, and I wouldn’t recommend it.
On the positive side, if you’re a fan of The Last of Us but prefer a more YA approach, this book might be a good fit.
The book is very accessible and engaging, with a rich and immersive world. The YA writing style makes it easy to read, and the story holds your attention even when some parts are a bit confusing. However, I found it a bit too YA for my taste.
The prologue was a bit choppy and unclear at first, making it hard to distinguish what I’m jumping into. After reading the book, I realized it’s essentially a recap of events from the previous trilogy in the same universe. A clearer or more concise recap might have helped me understand the overall world better. I also felt like some characters, like Michael, Travis, and Lucas, deserved more background information as they were introduced to us. And honestly Annie and Jude. Or at least more context on when they met as it was hard to get attached to their romance when it felt like I had missing pieces of this foundation.
Throughout the book, I often felt like I was reading the second book in a series rather than the first. There were moments where I felt like I was missing context, and it sometimes took me a while to piece together what was happening.
The writing itself is straightforward and readable, though it could benefit from some editing to refine certain areas. Overall, the story is enjoyable, the world feels lived-in, and fans of YA apocalyptic and zombie stories will likely find a lot to like here.

This is a powerful and emotionally charged start to a spin-off from the Fractured Reality series. Set in Australia, it presents a raw and brutal post-apocalyptic survival story that evokes the intensity of The Walking Dead and The Last of Us.
The narrative follows two teenagers, Annie and Jude, as they search for Annie’s brother after he is taken by a dangerous group who infect and experiment on their victims. At just fourteen years old, Annie has already endured more trauma than most adults, yet she continues to push forward with remarkable resilience. Jude, having survived his own experimentation, is now only half human, fighting daily to retain his sense of self. His struggle to hold on to his humanity adds a deeply moving layer to the story and strengthens his bond with Annie.
This is a character-driven novel where emotion and tension are ever-present. The pain, fear, and determination of the characters are vividly portrayed, making their journey feel intensely personal. Annie and Jude’s growth throughout the story is both believable and compelling, highlighting their inner strength in the face of overwhelming odds. Magda’s writing flows beautifully, balancing accessibility with emotional depth.
At its heart, this book is about survival in its many forms—physical endurance, emotional resilience, and the fight to remain human in a world that constantly threatens to strip that away. Themes of loss, hope, and perseverance are woven seamlessly into the narrative, giving the story lasting impact.
This novel is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy Young Adult dystopian fiction and emotionally driven survival stories.
Much appreciation to Books Publicity Services, Inc for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my opinion.
I am loving this post apocalyptic series! The pacing is different from her other book Tyranny of Tomorrow, its not all action. This story dives into the emotional side of surviving a world of VFP. Emotions at play: fear, irrational decision making (they are young adults, but adults do this too!), and feeling of helplessness.
Jude(half infected) is one of my favorite character. I like the way he carries himself yet he has this scary side that comes out.
A Dawn in Ruins is set in a dystopian, post‑apocalyptic Sydney where the world has been ravaged by mutated viruses.
The main characters, Annie and Jude, are unlikely allies who set off to find Annie’s brother, who is still being held captive.
This is the first book I’ve read by Magda, and it was such an experience. The world she builds is bleak, brutal, and at times horrifying, but there is also hope and beauty woven throughout the pages.
I found myself flinching at the brutality (if you’re sensitive like me, definitely check the trigger warnings beforehand), yet I was completely invested in the story and in what happens to Annie and Jude.
This was a fast-paced YA dystopian reminiscent of Tomorrow When the War Began and the 100 series. Set in Sydney, Australia, it follows Annie and Jude in the aftermath of a post-apocalyptic world that COVID destroyed leading to an infected population of ‘zombies’. The themes are quite adult despite it being a YA read.
There was a big time skip towards the end which felt a bit too quick, I wanted more! I enjoyed that it focuses a lot on the budding young love between Annie and Jude, the latter who is immune to the virus. I’m looking forward to more by Magda Mizzi including the Fractured Reality series.
These are great YA character driven post-apocalyptic stories. This is a spin-off of another series but you don't need to read that to enjoy this one. While YA, an adult won't be bored to bits reading it.
2.5🌟 I really wanted to love this and I think i may have enjoyed it more if I read the original series first! I will definitely be giving it a shot. This was a dark apocalyptic YA story.
