Blood Walker #1

The Lioness in Winter

Rate this book
There are precious few on the continent of Kartesia who know the truth about its past, and even then, the truth is a fickle thing on the tongues of men.

As powerful kings clash and an ancient power stirs, Arcadia Tremain is driven by vengeance to reclaim her family’s throne in the Kingdom of the West. Forced to hide her identity and to work from the shadows, her resistance to those in power continues to bring her closer to her birthright. Yet of all the battles she is ready to fight, and the sacrifices she is willing to make on her journey to greatness, it is the war for her heart for which the Lioness of the West is least prepared.

The Archduke Merek de Winter hails from the Kingdom of the North, one of the most desolate and godforsaken places on the continent. Hardened and battle-worn, he seeks redemption for his past by quashing the resistance in the West. Unwittingly sucked into a web of lies, half-truths, and secret cults, he must unmask the forces at work that seek to undermine his rule. As the Bear of the North awakens, he will need to keep his wits about him while he faces a foe that even his great physical strength and martial prowess cannot easily overcome.

It is said that a true Lioness is only born once a century, but, when she comes, will she bring salvation, or annihilation?

As winter takes hold of the Kingdom of the West, a long-forgotten prophecy comes to fruition, thrusting Arcadia and Merek into a world of politics, fanatical belief, and lust. They will be forced to forge their own truths, and to shape their own destinies, as they choose between duty and desire. Unraveling the lost history of Kartesia, and confronting the dark powers lurking within, is a path fraught with danger, one that reveals a truth that threatens to rip apart the world as they know it.

When one person’s salvation is another’s annihilation, who should be the one to choose?

3.5 stars, rounded up because despite my many thoughts, this was a compelling read and I never felt bored, also extra points for the fact that it doesn’t end on a mean cliffhanger.

Please check the trigger warnings, as my main issues are thematic rather than technical. I’m not usually into dubious consent, ultra-alpha male behavior, or overly explained emotional and sexual dynamics, and while the book’s enthusiastic take on sexual fluidity is fine in theory, it’s sometimes handled in ways that feel more convenient than convincing. Lust conquers all, apparently.
That said, this is a romantasy, not grimdark: it’s dark-ish, but I still wouldn’t wish a relationship like the protagonists’ on anyone.

The writing and editing are solid, with only a few typos and a quality I wasn’t expecting from what appears to be a debut. Also I like familiar tropes like royalty, vengeance, prophecies, and power plays but while the first half is well paced and focused on Arcadia and Marek, the second half gets messier, with cultists thrown into the mix. Nothing groundbreaking, yet clearly written with care and it kept me engaged. I liked the secondary characters and hope to see more of them, also Arcadia is an okay protagonist, and her emotional…volatility works as a narrative device 😛. Some bits of the story are borderline (chapter 32 was both fascinating and cringey), yet I kept turning pages and I’m definitely going to read the next one.

If this is your kind of book, I’d recommend it!

I loved this book and was surprised to discover it’s June Le Blanc’s debut novel.

The characters are multi-dimensional, with layers that slowly peel-off, as the story progresses - as does the plot itself. The tie-ins as the book progresses is wonderfully done.

A exciting page-turner with twists and turns that kept me past time to put-down. I simply won’t say anything about the ending except that I’m ready to snatch up the next in the series the moment it’s released.

The Lioness in Winter is a fantasy adventure novel written by June LeBlanc that follows a young woman named Arcadia. Arcadia Tremain is a princess who was raised in secret after her family was overthrown. As she grew older, she became consumed with a desire to exact revenge on those who had destroyed her family and reclaim her kingdom. Along the way, she met Archduke Merek de Winter, the leader of a rival kingdom who has issues of his own to face. Being a battle leader, he has spent most of his time directing and enforcing order, and while he appears ruthless, he is haunted by some mistakes he has made in the past. When Arcadia crosses Merek’s path, their relationship gets complicated by a lack of trust, duty that calls, and an attraction that draws them closer. Later, Arcadia discovers that her adventure is linked to a long-foretold prophecy about a leader who will rise to either save or destroy the kingdom. In light of this, Arcadia must confront some political treachery and enemies who pose a threat to her while also increasing her power. Merek also must navigate his past and decide if he will trust Arcadia and give love a chance.

Opinion:
One of the core themes in The Lioness of Winter is focused on identity and power. Arcadia's identity does not just refer to a woman who is trying to survive, but it lies in the fact that she is a princess, the sole heir to the overthrown kingdom. That identity alone gave her power, which was clearly useless because she was kept hidden. The relationship between identity and power shows that recognition alone is the determining factor of the power she wields. Without acknowledgement from others, Arcadia's power was of no use. Meanwhile, Merek possessed immense power, but he struggled to understand who he really was and what defined him because it had all been overtaken by power.

There was a relationship between what the characters are expected to do and what they really want for themselves. Duty, as portrayed in the book, shows Arcadia's aim to claim her rights as the heir to her kingdom, and she was focused on achieving this regardless of the sacrifice or danger it posed. Merek, in turn, has to fulfill his duty as a leader who works for the people to maintain law and order. Desire was reflected in Merek and Arcadia's relationship, but because their positions and situations made it forbidden, the two had to deny their growing feelings for each other and focus on the task at hand. As the story continues, their love progresses despite all bounds. It was slow, painful, and restrained, shaped by fear because they could not bear to admit their relationship.

The book, being slow-paced, is not one to be read in a rush; the author took her time to craft a realm where kingdoms, history, and power struggles reside. She revealed the fantasy world in bits through conversations, history, and even characters' backstories. This means that readers are expected to pay attention to each detail of the story and follow along to enjoy it.

This is the first book of the series, and while I look forward to reading more in the future, I would recommend this epic fantasy adventure novel to adult fantasy romance readers who actually prefer reading slow-burn stories since they will love this one. Book clubs with adult readers who love mature themes can find topics for discussion, such as the themes mentioned already.

Another LitPick reviewer:
Arcadia Tremain is a young princess and secret heir to the kingdom of the West. Her father, the former ruler, had been overthrown, and his throne had been stolen from him. Arcadia was raised in secret; she had been hiding away after her family had been destroyed with the only desire to return and reclaim what was hers. In another part of the world lives a battle leader from a rival kingdom named Archduke Merek de Winter. He is a cold and strict-looking man known for enforcing his family rule and keeping law and order. One fateful day, Arcadia and Merek crossed paths, and while they had duties to fulfill, they found themselves forming a relationship that seemed forbidden. Along the way, Arcadia finds a prophecy that tells of the rise of a Lioness who will either bring salvation or destruction. This forced her to take full control of her responsibility and face challenges that served as a hindrance. Meanwhile, Merek, who is torn by his position as a leader, has to recover his identity and decide if trusting Arcadia and the relationship they both have is the right thing to do.

Opinion:
The Lioness in Winter by June LeBlanc is an adventure novel set in a fictional world where multiple kingdoms rule. These kingdoms are located on the continent of Kartesia, where power and war reign. The description of this place feels ancient, and the atmosphere is cold and serious with little to no safety. Each kingdom is divided by a border that keeps intruders or people from other kingdoms out. A mere pass on this border could lead to death and was too risky even for travelers.

The author's writing style is very descriptive, and the places mentioned are written in a way that allows the reader to visualize locations such as the court and other places. Furthermore, the author concentrated on each character's thoughts, understanding their emotional states, fears, and doubts; this deepened the character development, resulting in an even slower pace. The writing style is best suited to readers who prefer slow-paced books with gradual building rather than fast-paced novels. So, I can recommend it to immersive readers who take their time to understand a book before moving on.

Arcadia, one of the characters and the protagonist in the story, is a revenge-driven lady whose sole determination is to reclaim her kingdom despite the obstacles. She's a lady with strong ambitions and a leader who is trying to survive against all odds. Unlike her, Archduke Merek de Winter already has a sense of duty as a leader, and while he looks heartless and stern, he finds himself losing understanding of who he really is, pushing him to find out his real identity. The relationship between these two is intense and unfolds gradually in a romantic way even though it was threatened by their goals and duties. It was more of an enemies-to-lovers trope, and this can be recommended to readers looking for such tropes or stories related to slow-burn relationships.

The novel contains some violent situations, including torture, sexual violence, suicide, and death. As a result, this book is recommended to adult readers only. It will also suit fantasy readers who are comfortable with series starters and long books. If you like books such as A Song of Ice and Fire, which is based on political tension and power struggles, then you can also relate to this one.

This book is incredible! I highly recommend it and I personally cannot wait for the next one.

The characters are unique, captivating, and enthralling. Arcadia is such a beautifully complex character and I loved getting a glimpse into her mind. The chemistry between Arcadia and Merek is both terrifying and addicting.

Arcadia and Merek aren’t the whole characters that captivated me. Both Yered and Brajan are equally as full and complete. They both add so much to the tension of the story and to helping build the world.

The writing is so descriptive and beautiful. This story kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and had my jaw dropping from unexpected twists.

I cannot recommend this book enough!!

An exciting blend of action, adventure, and spice, this story kept me on edge, never quite sure where the next twist would lead. The chemistry between Merek and Arcadia is dark and intense, making every encounter unforgettable. The world of Kartesia is full of political intrigue and hidden histories, that continued to pull me in deeper with each revelation. It was a true delight to unravel its mysteries alongside the characters. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
