Melissa Storm is a mother first, and everything else second. She used to write under the pseudonym Emlyn Chand, but finally had the confidence to come out as herself to the world. Her fiction is highly personal and often based on true stories. Writing is Melissa's way of showing her daughter just how beautiful life can be, when you pay attention to the everyday wonders that surround us.

Melissa loves books so much, she married fellow author Falcon Storm. Between the two of them, there are always plenty of imaginative, awe-inspiring stories to share. Melissa and Falcon also run the business Novel Publicity together, where she works as publisher, marketer, editor, and all-around business mogul. When she's not reading, writing, or child-rearing, Melissa spends time relaxing at home in the company of her two dogs, five parrots, and rescue cat. She never misses an episode of The Bachelor or her nightly lavender-infused soak in the tub.

On the last day of a recent reader/writer conference, I attended a masterclass titled, 'Brand Me Until it Hurts'. The college professor and 30+ fiction books author that taught it is a huge fan of this book and I can see why. She didn't expound upon the usual 'branding' stuff like making all your book covers look the same and so forth. No, she taught this book almost entirely. It's easy to see why.

This isn't about getting on social media. It isn't about graphics. It isn't even really about marketing...not directly. It's about choosing the books you want to write because they're the best fit for what you want to do and finding the best genre for them based on the target audience you discern for them. Discover Your Brand will take you by the hand every step of the way to finding both your audience and your genre.

Think you already know them? I bet you don't know them as well as you think you do but you will after you finish this book. It will take a couple of hours out of your day and set you on a well defined career path for a long time to come.

Great writers published superb books. In fact statics indicate that 309,957 titles were released in 2012 alone. Some will celebrate a major accomplishment by making the New York Times Best Seller List. On the other hand, many will be disappointed due to not achieving their desired reach.

Like myself and many other writers unsatisfied with a low volume of sales due to not being highly recognized for our talents as authors, there’s one determining factor playing a vital role in it all. Reasoning for it all has to do with placing a small amount of emphasis upon a marketing/branding plan or, the lack of putting one into place prior to release dates. Placing all of the energy into writing and publishing the book, most writers assume that the title of a book will sale itself.
There is a lot a work that goes into writing a book. The same amount of effort that it takes to complete a title should also be applied to who you plan to sale it to and how your style of writing will be identified from all the rest. For those lacking the foundation or knowledge needed to create one and haveing a clue where as to start, read Discover Your Brand by Emlyn Chand.
Completing this book, the first thing that came to mind was a doctor’s exam. Trained physicians check individuals thoroughly from head to toe from the inside out to ensure that everything is properly working. This guide does the exact same thing for authors. It allows writers the opportunity by providing specific directives the chance to thoroughly inspect their reads to ensure a higher desired target population reach.

The author of three books for tweens, chapter six, Finding Your Genre, opened my eyes to realm of possibilities I hadn’t considered. I had no idea how an incorrect classification of a book could result in a writer ever reaching his or her potential targeted audience. Thanks to Chand, I now know.

To all writers whether seasoned or new, be sure to create a branding plan prior to releasing your forth coming titles and purchase Discover Your Brand to assist you with completing the process.

In this workbook, Emlyn Chand encourages (demands?) authors to determine their brand and stick to it, and provides quite a few helpful resources both to prove the point and help the author achieve that goal. It's concise, well-written, and very easy to understand and follow. Considering I got it for free and it's a pretty short read, I can't argue with the value for money!

The only part that has me docking one star, and has me a little iffy on the entire idea, is the necessity of choosing a genre. Granted, this might be simple naivete on my part, but while Emlyn argues that branding is just a part of choosing what you're already doing, it feels much more like a straitjacket to me. The blasé attitude toward abandoning stories that don't fit into one's brand, essentially commanding an author to stick to the tried-and-true formula, bothers me on a level that goes beyond marketing. Marketing can be a great way to bring out who you really are (I'm a business major myself, I know that very well,) but it can also be the equivalent of a lie or a lobotomy, in which case it's definitely gone too far.

Which leaves me in a quandary, the same one as many young authors, I'm sure. Do I follow the advice given, constrain myself to what's market-tested and successful, and run from there? Or do I run the risk of trying something different, come what may?

Right now, I can't say that I know the answer. But at the least, Emlyn's shown the right way to go along the one path, and for that reason, I would recommend this book to any author who hasn't thought about branding. Whether you decide to go with the method or not, knowing what the method is can only be helpful.

This book is all around a quick and easy success. It is designed to help an author find their place and it focuses on something that many authors aren't ever taught about: branding. Whether you're a new author trying to learn the business, or you're a seasoned and successful author, I think that there is a lesson in here for you. I'd even go as far as say that someone in another field could use this book to help mold their brand (like, say a musician? an artist?).

This book is easy to read, it's got humor dappled throughout it, and it's interactive. If you are in the middle of taking your careers as an author seriously, you may want to take the time to read this book.

Discover Your Brand is a very helpful workbook for authors who are just starting out, or anyone thinking about becoming an author. There are questions to ask yourself to determine what works best for you and your potential readers, fun little assignments to work through that help you figure things out even more in-depth, and just overall great advice. I found it to be a good starting place for potential authors, and even authors who've already published and may need a little help in marketing themselves a little better. 4 stars!

Basically it was one long blog post about picking a genre and not writing all over the place under one name. I was disappointed and glad that I got it for free. I would have like more on actually marketing yourself as a writer.

Loved this. I listened to it on audiobook. It was only about an hour and a half long but it gets right to the point. Really helped me reframe my indie author brand in a matter of a few hours, and I'm feeling so much more confident and focused.
