Uncover the mysteries of Saint Andrew’s damned in a supernatural horror New York Times bestselling author, Kevin J. Anderson, describes as “dark, creepy, relentless.”
When Rhea and Eddie’s Chevy breaks down in the middle of nowhere, they’re forced to seek refuge in St. Andrew, the kind of town people drive through every day without stopping. There’s just something off about the place.
With grief and guilt at her heels, Rhea works for their room at the town's only bar. Everything and everyone there reminds her of her family. But for the first time in three years, she is also shown kindness. Would these new "friends" see her the same if they knew the drugs she had carried killed her little sister?
Meanwhile, St. Andrew's estranged priest offers Eddie salvation from his past. But Eddie doesn't need saving, not when he's got Rhea and the comfort in the bottom of a bottle. Still, the dark figure seen out of the corner of Eddie’s eye since crossing town lines promises much more. Will Eddie give into temptation?
What was supposed to be a temporary stay turns into a struggle against darkness and damnation. Will these two young lovers reconcile their guilty past of drugs and death or be trapped in this haunted Midwestern town forever?
Disclaimer: I was provided a review copy of this book, though I have also purchased it.
The narrative of Dead Gods does an excellent job in grounding the story in a very particular place and time, before allowing itself to grow more and more surreal and dream-like. I'd almost describe the prose as 'chewy' at times, as the narration savours the different locations within St. Andrew, but it also has a rhythm that changes pace well as the perception of time seems to distort for both readers and characters. I'm looking forward to spending more time in St. Andrew with future titles.
Dead Gods by Chuck Lang is a dark fever dream of a horror story with a deceptively simple set up. Rhea and Eddie are forced to stop in St Andrew when their car breaks down, a town so remote that it doesn't seem to even be on the map. There's no getting away from it, there is something very wrong about this town, and the longer the couple stay the stranger things get. Grief and guilt are twisted and manipulated as Eddie and Rhea are forced to face the past and the consequences of their actions, but will that be enough to free them from a town that wants to keep them forever? I have to say that I struggled with this book initially, the writing just felt a little forced, a little overly descriptive for my taste but as I settled in and found my footing it got a little easier. I can't exactly say that I liked the characters, but I was definitely intrigued by them and was invested in their story. I was on tenterhooks once I learned the secret that Eddie had been keeping and the aftermath of Rhea's uncovering of that secret was incredibly powerful. I also thought the author did an excellent job of building tension over the course of the book, it really did seem like there was something very ominous hanging over the town and holding the residents in thrall, and that feeling of something evil in the darkness was masterfully handled. This was an unsettling read and one that I will definitely be recommending to horror fans. I read an ARC courtesy of the publisher, Cursed Dragon Ship Publishing, all opinions are my own.

This is a dark, gritty, and powerful book of suspense and facing the unknown. This isn't a book for the faint of heart. It entails powerful deep thoughts inside yourself and hits on hard topics. I really enjoyed this horror book as I am a fan of dark horror and macabre genres. The end of this book had my guessing and wanting more from Chuck. I hope he is busy working on his next book because I loved this one. Dark, gritty and at times gruesome, I enjoyed the story here of love, loss, guilt, pleasure and the mystery surrounding the town and the people in it. S nice read for a dark night in a warm cozy bed, this book will keep you up at night. Maybe with nightmares. Maybe wondering if you truly know the people around you. And sometimes wondering if death is really the end. Because in this dark novel, it's not. And guilt makes it worse. Stop the suspense and pick this one up. You won't regret it. This book is haunted. From beginning to end. And it will give you the shivers. I'm excited for more.
