this is wonderful book, even if you don't plan to use it as intended (a guidebook for literary pilgrims, complete with street directions, visiting hours, and other salient details). the armchair traveler gets to spend quality time with a mindbogglingly erudite and entertaining raconteur, who packs his entries with juicy and sometimes moving anecdotes and tidbits representing a lifetime of persistent research, casual curiosity and huge affection for all kinds of writers (extending to the authors of jingles and songs). what a storyteller! that the book is organized geographically, by state and town, randomizes the history in a lively way, utterly escaping dreary chronological cliches. perfect book for a "new york" poet to write, gossipy, humorous and loving; a classic work of that school.
