About the author

Pierre Chakalov has been passionate about chess for over 35 years.
As a child, he learned to play in a small chess club in Kyiv, Ukraine, before continuing his development in France, where he reached national youth level.
Trained at the Saint-Dizier Chess Club in the 1990s, he discovered the excitement of competition and took part in several regional and national championships, showing steady and rapid progress.
But six-hour games every weekend were not very compatible with academic life.
Pierre eventually set chess aside to build a career in finance, where he found another form of strategic challenge.
A graduate of the Northwestern Kellogg School of Management (MBA) and Institut Mines-Télécom, he worked around the world with Crédit Agricole and Société Générale, in audit and large-scale project management — roles that combined strategy, stakeholder alignment, and clarity of communication.
This path gradually connected two worlds that continue to inspire him: chess and management — both demanding the ability to structure one’s thinking, anticipate, and adjust the plan.
The spark for this book came in 2004, when Pierre had the unexpected opportunity to play Judit Polgar, the greatest female player of all time.
During that game, he chose a “safe” opening he knew technically well… and it felt as if he had let the moment slip away. He didn’t even enjoy it.
That absence of strategic intent later became the driving idea behind his book — a guide that makes chess strategy both fresh and accessible.
The book is the result of several years of work, testing, and discussions with improving players.
Pierre designed it drawing on his experience as a chess player, athlete, and finance professional, with one clear goal: to help players structure their thinking around a real, actionable game plan.
“I never liked memorizing opening books — I always preferred to understand the underlying logic, because that understanding stays with you forever.” — Pierre Chakalov
