This book talks about how children feel before they go to a different grade level. They get nervous and anxious because everything is different from what they know. This is a great book for teachers to read to children on the first day of school and parents to ready a day before.

Cute rhyming book in the pattern of "Night Before Christmas" for first day of school.

Plot: The Night Before Big School, is a story about a brother and sister’s adventures on the night before they start “big school”! This book confronts Teddy and Janie’s anxiety about starting school tomorrow, and follows them along on silly adventures the night before school will start.
Why I Chose It: I chose this book because I think it is a playful way of confronting kids’ fears about a new school year (something to which I can definitely relate), and has great illustrations!
Genre: Fiction, Children’s
Grade Level/Subject: Primary/Literacy
How I Would Use it in My Classroom: I would read this book to my students on the first day of school as a way to ‘break the ice’ and let them know it’s okay, and actually very normal, to be nervous about starting school!

This book was okay. It was written in the fashion of the classic "Twas the Night Before Christmas", but is was about the night before the first day of school. The girl and her brother went to go to sleep but she heard a noise and went down stairs to find their pets packing their lunches and school supplies. When the girl awoke, she thought it was a dream until her brother found a night saying good luck at today, and their mother questioned who wrote it. That's when the girl saw her dog with a pencil behind his ear. With so many other stories out there to read before the night of the first day of school, I wouldn't recommend this one.

Cute rhyming book in the style of Clement Moore's famous Christmas poem except it is the night before the first day of school and the little girl creeps downstairs to find the household pets doing something a little unusual. Cute story...nothing particularly spectacular or noteworthy.
