Pride and Prejudice Chapter 27

With a foundation of the prose created by six handpicked Austen-inspired authors who have selected a location from their travels upon which to base an Austenesque short story, this book is just as much a whimsical travelogue as an anthology of excellent Regency romance fiction and fantasy. Each author tells the story of their homage to Jane Austen during their past travels to the UK, with photos to enhance the tale.

Curated and edited by meticulous Regency romance and Austenesque editor Carol S. Bowes, the anthology/travelogue is a quality edition that will be sure to grace a few future trips to England by Janeites or settle on coffee tables for those who prefer to live vicariously through the travels of our authors and enjoy a variation or six.

Suzan Lauder, Kelly Miller, L.L. Diamond, Heather Moll, Lory Lilian, and Riana Everly are the six authors, and each one is known for their popular, engaging, and high-quality Austenesque novels, with many bestsellers and prize winners among them.

In honor of Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday, a team of talented authors led by editor, Carol S. Bowes, contributed a unique anthology. The authors have shared their travels to beloved sites around England associated with Jane Austen, her novels, and adaptions based on her novels. They follow up their travelogue essays which come with photos, by the way, with variation novellas on her novels. To cap off this delightful treasure of tales, this is a charity anthology with the proceeds going all to charity. I’m long familiar with the talented pens chosen for this anthology so I tingled with anticipation to delve in.

First up was author Kelly Miller sharing about her lovely, memorable trip to Bath, Derbyshire and London followed by her historical P&P variation tale, The Love Potion.
A kindness done to a young Romani child ends with Elizabeth receiving a love potion that she gives to the odious and arrogant Mr. Darcy. His behavior toward her seems to alter and, he apologizes for his remarks at the assembly. Was the potion real? When Mr. Darcy proves to be a gentleman she can respect and love, she is torn. How far will Darcy have to go to prove his love? Ah, swoon, he goes the distance to Bath, of course!

Next, after sharing about her three-week whirlwind tour of Bath, Hampshire, London, York, and Derbyshire, there is What are Men to Rocks and Mountains? by Suzan Lauder
P&P variation, from Elizabeth’s perspective, focused on Lydia and her elopement that takes a turn so that she ends up on the excursion with Elizabeth and the Gardiners to Derbyshire. Lydia learns a vast deal about the man Lydia wanted to marry and the man who has secretly captured her sister’s heart. I do love a good redemption story.

Seeking His Second Chance by L.L. Diamond was preceded by an engaging reminiscence of a six-year Air Force assignment in England that allowed her to see so many wonderful historical, natural and cultural sights associated with Jane Austen and beyond.
P&P sequel with alternating POV, what if the happily ever after took a tragic turn when Darcy accuses Elizabeth of infidelity with… gulp… Wickham! She runs; he eventually finds her, but that's the easy part. Long road back to love, indeed. A deeply emotional tale ensues.

After getting off the plane in Edinburgh, a lovely meandering journey south through the York Dales, Norfolk and to Alton, her travels take her to Chawton for a charity anthology donation to the Jane Austen House and on to Bath for the Jane Austen Festival. A Matter of Persuasion by Riana Everly
Anne’s thinking back on the tragic decision and ending to her one chance at love. If the heroine of Persuasion could visit with her authoress and learn that her fate could be changed… a little fairy magic to this one helped real world meet literary world when Anne Elliot and the Crofts journey into Hampshire.

The Path to Love by Heather Moll is preceded by a fun adventure around Derbyshire – Bakewell, Dovedale, Chatsworth, and Lyme Park- looking at the sites Elizabeth and the Gardiners might have seen and Austen wrote about.
A lighthearted P&P variation late in the original story when Elizabeth and the Gardiners visit Pemberley on their tour of Derbyshire where a surprise encounter brings a second chance for a pair of lovers. Maybe... Mrs. Reynolds! I’m shocked. Oh my, there is a lesson in this- do not break the master’s heart and expect hospitality from his housekeeper.

Lory’s telling of her harrowing experiences behind the wheel of a manual shift rental car had me giggling as did her gang of Austen gal pals searching for Mr. Darcy (Sudbury Hall, Lyme Park, Chawton, Reading and Winchester). Onward to The Gallery of Second Chances by Lory Lilian
A P&P variation/sequel in which the end is altered. A year after Lydia elopes and Jane marries Bingley, Lizzy with the Gardiners has returned for a visit to Pemberley for a country house party and she hopes that Mr. Darcy will dare make his offer a second time in spite of a pesky pair of interlopers. I wish I could see that dishy Darcy painted portrait that captivated Lizzy.

All told this was engaging and a wonderful tribute to Jane Austen's 250th with the blend of travelogue and travel-oriented historical romance short stories. The variety in styles of writing, plots, characterizations, and relationships was a delightful sampling. Lovers of Austen and those wishing to sample solid Austenesque storytelling should treat themselves to In the Path of Jane Austen.

I rec'd an eARC from the authors to read in exchange for an honest review.

An Anthology with Heart: Honouring Jane and Helping Her Legacy

In the Path of Jane Austen: Travels and Tales — A 250th Birthday Anthology
This book was such a joy to read. Carol S. Bowes gathered six favourite Austenesque authors—Kelly Miller, Suzan Lauder, L.L. Diamond, Riana Everly, Heather Moll, and Lory Lilian—to celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday. Each of them took inspiration from a place they had visited in England and turned it into a short story. There are even photos from their trips, which made me feel like I was tagging along.

I’ll probably never get the chance to walk those places myself, so it was wonderful to live it all through their eyes. One moment I was in Pemberley’s gallery, the next in Bath, and even in a bit of fantasy where Anne Elliot meets Jane Austen.

Each story offers something unique:

The Love Potion by Kelly Miller
Elizabeth helps a young boy who has sprained his ankle, and in gratitude she receives a love potion from his mother. When she decides to give it to Darcy, it’s not done with kindness. The tension lies in whether the potion will actually work—and what Elizabeth will do if it does.

What are Men to Rocks and Mountains? by Suzan Lauder
This one takes Lydia Bennet’s infamous elopement and turns it on its head. At first, I was every bit as exasperated with Lydia as I usually am, but by the end I found myself grateful for her presence the story. It’s a clever twist that made me like her.

Seeking His Second Chance by L.L. Diamond
Lady Catherine may be gone, but her influence isn’t. Darcy comes across her journal and with it the truth about a scheme, carried out with an unexpected ally, that pulled him and Elizabeth apart. Watching him attempt to fix what is broken made this one of the most emotional stories in the collection for me.

A Matter of Persuasion by Riana Everly
This story adds a touch of fantasy as Anne Elliot comes face-to-face with a young woman named Jane—only the reader knows it’s Austen. Their meeting is at times warm, at times tense, but always compelling. Through it, Anne finds the clarity to direct her own choices and desires.

The Path to Love by Heather Moll
Elizabeth is given bad directions while visiting Pemberley, meant to lead her astray. Instead, the detour sets her on just the right course. It’s a reminder that sometimes the wrong turn is exactly the right one.

The Gallery of Second Chances by Lory Lilian
Elizabeth returns to Pemberley a year after her first visit, the one cut short by Jane’s letters. The gallery becomes her refuge, a quiet place that also gives her and Darcy some much-needed privacy. And then there’s the portrait of Darcy…quietly holding the key to what her heart has known all along.

And here’s a small tease: two authors chose the same unexpected character to meddle in Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship. Both attempts fail, thankfully, leaving ODC on the path to their happily ever after.

What I also love is that all profits go to a Jane Austen charity. So not only do you get six wonderful stories, you’re also helping to honour Austen’s legacy.

I highly recommend this book and support the cause. I was honoured to receive an advance copy and am voluntarily leaving a review. I’ll be purchasing the published version to add to my library.

Excellent short stories

The 250th birthday of Jane Austen is celebrated in an anthology by authors who are famous for great variations Pride and Prejudice. All of the stories are fun and lovely.

But even better each author tells us about a trip taken for learning about Jane Austen. Great mini-travelogues. I recommend this book.

This is a lovely book. You want a dive into Pride and Prejudice and a taste of Persuasion -this is a must-read. I loved the personal details of each author's Jane Austen experience. The pictures presented were additive to the story. The short stories allowed me to pick up and put down over several days without feeling I was missing something.

I love falling back in love with each character all over again. Each author was different but it felt like it was written by a close friend.

It is a wonderful, fun read. I completely recommend it.

To mark the 250th birthday of Jane Austen, a group of well established authors of Austenesque fiction come together to create a combined travelogue and short story anthology.

The authors share memories of travels around England in the footsteps of Jane Austen. Each memory inspires a story.

The six stories vary from the whimsical to the heartbreaking.

This is a treat that should not be missed.

The book is a collection of short stories by the authors Kelly Miller, Suzan Lauder, LL Diamond, Riana Everly, Heather Moll and Lory Lilian. In addition, each author tells about their trip(s) to Great Britain and their experiences on the path of Jane Austen. These retellings are all related to the respective short story. I enjoyed both parts, the travel experience as well as the short story, very much. It was so interesting to have the travel report of each author and their intention to go on the trip. There are also several photos, taken by the authors, that are related to the stories.
For me all stories were five star stories. There are five Pride and Prejudice stories and one Persuasion story. All stories are “only kisses” stories.

THE LOVE POTION by Kelly Miller
After aiding a gypsy boy Elizabeth receives a love potion from his mother as a thank you with the instructions to use it on Mr Darcy. Elizabeth does as requested and soon to her astonishment the gentleman begins to show an interest in her. But then Elizabeth realizes that she may as well develop feelings for Mr Darcy. Will there be a happily ever after despite the influence of the love potion? Or will Darcy’s feelings subside because they are not by natural inclination but because of the potion?

I really love the idea that a love potion is the means to alter Mr Darcy’s attitude after his insult at the Meryton Assembly. Due to the potion Elizabeth takes great care to observe Mr Darcy and this gives her the opportunity to really see him without her prejudices - because otherwise she would not be able to see changes. I really like that she is thus able to see Darcy’s admiration for her. They also become better acquainted because they are more open to one another and therefore come to know each other better.

WHAT ARE MEN TO ROCKS AND MOUNTAINS by Suzan Lauder
Elizabeth and her aunt and uncle are preparing for their trip to Derbyshire and the Peaks when unexpectedly Elizabeth’s younger sister Lydia arrives on their doorstep. Lydia confesses to having eloped with and being abandoned by Wickham. To preserve Lydia's reputation the Gardiners also take her on the trip. But then the group unexpectedly meets Mr Darcy while visiting his estate.
Will Elizabeth nevertheless be able to tell him about her changed opinion? Or will Lydia's presence be an obstacle to their reunion? And does Darcy still love Elizabeth?

What I loved most in this story was Lydia's change in character. At the beginning she is the spoiled child we all know and she is convinced that Wickham will come back to marry her. After some sound reproves she finally starts to think and realises that she was deceived and Wickham is not worthy of her regard. Then she can become a sensible, smart young woman and she is the one who knudges Elizabeth and Darcy in the right direction to finally declare their love.

SEEKING HIS SECOND CHANCE by LL Diamond
Due to serious accusations the pregnant Elizabeth Darcy impulsively flees from her husband and seeks refuge under another name at the seaside. Darcy desperately tries to find her but only by chance is he able to gain information about her whereabouts. Having now new knowledge about the accusations against Elizabeth he tries to gain her forgiveness.
Will Darcy be able to regain Elizabeth’s trust and love? Will he be able to convince her that he still loves her? Or will this estrangement be a permanent one and the end of their loving union?

I was a bit heartbroken at the beginning of this variation. Darcy and Elizabeth are estranged … my poor heart. We later learn about the reasons and I can understand both sides, but I equally had hoped that both sides had acted less impulsively than they would not have become estranged. Fortunately Darcy seeks for Elizabeth and finally finds her so they can try to save their marriage. Beside all this sad moments there are also some beautiful ones in it for example when Darcy finally meets his child.

A MATTER OF PERSUASION by Riana Everly
Anne Elliott and her friends Admiral and Mrs Croft are visiting Alton, the town where Mrs Croft grew up with her brother Frederick Wentworth. The remembrance of Wentworth is bitter sweet for Anne - they were once engaged before she was persuaded to break the engagement. Now Wentworth has been dead for three years and Anne still remembers him. When she meets the author Jane Austen and hears about the fairy path in the village her life begins to change.
Will there be a second chance for Anne to find her happiness? What is it about the fairy path? And is there a connection between Jane Austen and Anne Elliott?

This story is the only story that is not a Pride and Prejudice variation but I love it. First of all because it is so cleverly constructed and has a huge amount of magic and supernatural elements in it. Because of this one is not always entirely sure what to expect next. I will not tell much to not spoil the story but, fortunately, in the end not all is as it seems in the beginning. But I loved Anne and her determination to change things for the better.

THE PATH OF LOVE by Heather Moll
When Elizabeth tours Pemberley with her aunt and uncle Gardiner she gets the feeling that not everyone welcomes her presence there. When Darcy unexpectedly arrives Elizabeth feelings are in an uproar. Due to a minor accident she is forced to stay for the night at Pemberley, together with her relatives.
Will Darcy be able to convince her of his ongoing regard? Does Elizabeth now return his feelings? And who causes all these incidents that happened to Elizabeth?

I really love that Elizabeth does not let the incidents get her down. She holds her chin up high. I love that Darcy tries to make her comfortable in these situations and does all he can to rectify them. And the culprit for all the incidents is later also found out and they convinced them to stop.

THE GALLERY OF SECOND CHANCES by Lory Lilian
A year after their last visit Elizabeth and her aunt and uncle Gardiner are visiting Pemberley again. For Elizabeth this visit is highly anticipated because she hasn't seen Darcy this whole year but missed him very much. She is now sure that she loves him and is determined to find out if he still feels something for her. But circumstances seem to be against a reunion.
Will Elizabeth be able to determine Darcy's feelings? Or will the arrival of other guests hinder her in her endeavours? Will she eventually be able to find her happily ever after with Darcy?

I really like that the portrait gallery of Pemberley (the one with the Darcy painting) has such an important role for this story. First Elizabeth goes there to admire the painting, later she meets the original there. I really like that the two are flirting with each other and are very open to one another to determine if there are mutual feelings (yes, there are 😉). A delightful story without much obstacles for ODC, once they know about their shared love they fight all obstacles together.

If you like to read six lovely stories combined with the respective author's travel tales about the place they have chosen for their story you should definitely read this excellent book.

I highly recommend it. For your information: Profits from the sale of the book will go to a Jane Austen charity

I received a free copy of the book from one of the authors (and later bought a copy on my own) and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Kelly Miller’s nice travelogue took us on her tour with her and her family, a really nice narrative and descriptions.
In her story, she uses those great narrative skills to give a magical twist to Elizabeth and Darcy’s romance.

Suzan Lauder’s travel descriptions were a nice appraisal of how to intertwine different objectives when traveling. I liked her style and recommendations.
In “What are Men to Rocks and Mountains?” she deviates from canon to comprehend several circumstances, including some difficult ones, to bring us to an enchanting ending with happiness for everyone.

Reading through L.L. Diamond's experiences and travels from her time in England is thrilling! She got to visit so many different places and experience so a variety of things! And with her experience as a writer, she’s able to almost make the reader experience those places too.
In her short story, “Seeking His Second Chance”, she achieves the almost impossible! To make the reader see one of the most iconic characters of Pride and Prejudice as one of the villains of the story. A gripping and lovely tale that leaves us wanting more!

Riana Everly is one of the most seasoned travelers I have read about. Her style of traveling sounds like she knows exactly what she’s doing and where she’s going. She also has an enchanting way of describing what she’s seeing and experiencing.
Her “Persuasion” based story, “A Matter of Persuasion,” opens the door to an alternate world where anything can happen, and she even allows us to get a glimpse of our dearest and favorite author, Jane Austen! I would love for her to expand this idea into a complete novel.

I found Heather Moll’s Elizabeth Bennet Tour to be a great idea for going around the places she’s supposed to have visited on her Northern tour. I’m not sure about the driving along the cliffs part, but the concept was novel and original.
“The Path to Love” is also a great story, and I found that I got irked with Mrs. Reynolds, but at the same time, I could understand her pique. It is, in my opinion, a must-read.
Lory Lilian has been a favorite for a long time. I always enjoy her stories and keep looking for her publications. Her tour seemed so nice and complete, and it included the memorial service for the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, though I’m not sure I would be brave enough to drive on the wrong side of the road even to visit Lyme Park and Sudbury Hall!
The ”Gallery of Second Chances” is an enchanting story that is easy to picture for anyone who has seen the 1995 series of Pride and Prejudice. On my part, I could easily “see” our beloved couple meeting there and getting closer, and I appreciated the way everything came together, and the hilarious response Darcy got to his application.

I enjoyed this Jane Austen anthology immensely! The six novellas are each wonderfully done, with five Pride and Prejudice stories to enjoy and one Persuasion one as well. I found myself enthralled not only by the stories themselves, but also by the author’s notes that were included, describing their travels to Jane Austen’s England and the neat things each writer saw while they were there. This just added an extra layer of interest to the book for me.

I loved how well the characterizations were done. There were so many delightful moments in this collection. I always love reading Jane Austen retellings because the authors bring their own fresh creative spin to familiar characters and settings, while staying true to what we know and love, and I loved seeing Mr. Bennett convincing Mr. Collins that his plan of marriage to Elizabeth is flawed because she is so strong willed she will speak her mind and stir up his parishoners. Or seeing how Darcy would be forced to take action and make amends if he’d made a terrible mistake and Elizabeth had left (I do love to see a hero grovel a bit when they’ve been awful. And the Georgiana scenes were lovely, too!) This was a delight from start to finish and kudos to the authors! 5/5 stars.

An anthology that any Jane Austen fan will enjoy!

What a fabulous concept for a Jane Austen anthology—combining details and photos from holidays taken around the UK by the authors, often JA locations, and stories based around those places involving Jane Austen’s characters, and sometimes Jane Austen herself (inspired).

Six stories take Austen characters on different paths from those the author intended, which always makes the story interesting for me, trusting that the path of true love for our main characters will win out.

Whilst five of the six stories take from Pride & Prejudice, there is a delightful palette cleanser from Riana Everly tucked into the middle of the book ‘A Matter of Persuasion’ which I found most intriguing as the character of Anne Elliot unwittingly interacts with Jane Austen herself!

If all of that hasn’t convinced you to part with your hard-earned cash, remember the profits from the sales are donated to a Jane Austen charity.

Highly recommend.
