Dreams of Verdure

Rate this book
He reached for the stars. The jungle claimed him instead…Dashin grew up on a harsh desert world, always the youngest, always alone. When the chance for adventure finally came, he signed onto a mining ship to prospect uncharted space. But his search for freedom ends in disaster when he crash-lands on a lush jungle planet and wakes in a treetop village among a people unlike any he has ever known—some of whom wield gifts that defy logic.

He is thrust into a series of ritual trials, deadly ones he’s entirely untrained for, even before the attempts on his life begin.

Alina grew up in a canopy village, yearning for something beyond the life she knew. That “something” may just have fallen from the sky. To follow that path, she must embrace the gift she’s always feared and trust in impossible visions and an unlikely ally. And, she must do it before it all slips through her fingers.

David Pariseau

David Pariseau has always dreamed of writing novels. He even tried it a few times amid life’s obligations and detours. "Dreams of Verdure" is the culmination of that dream. The first, he hopes, of many books along that path. The second book, "Songs of Flint", is in the final stages of editing, with first drafts of the other three books in the series completed.

Like many other SciFi/Fantasy authors, David spent years in the High-Tech as an engineer, wrangling electrons and debugging unruly code.

David lives in the Bay Area in California with his wife Janis and his writing partner Coco, who’s been invaluable in fleshing out Pritha’s details, though he still doesn’t understand why she had to be a cat and not a Shih-Tzu.

Thank you David Pariseau for reaching out on my •Looking for Indie Authors” post and sending me a copy of your book to review. The experience was great and I look forward to reading the next book of the series! Dashin is a little lonesome wolf who crash lands on this world where Alina resides after experiencing a dangerous meteor field accident in space. He is nursed back to help and “forced” to be part of three different trials to be accepted into the tribe. Unfortunately for him he’s from a desert planet and not the trees so he has a lot to learn!

This author created a very vivid world with different animals and a unique tribe with their very own unique abilities. Alina is gifted with touch and uses it in her own unique way to help Dashin. Though we get some breath holding moments, the story ends happily. (No cliff hangers here guys!) We also get introduced to a charmingly sweet Pritha after a harrowing encounter on the forest floor leaves Dashin “melded”. I really enjoyed the story and was captivated by the character growth of both Dashin and Alina.

I hope in the next book we get to see the two explore maybe beyond the forest and challenge each other to try more things they hadn’t in the past. There is just a smidge of romance in the book, but nothing spicy.

Initially I gave this a 3.5 star rating but I’ve been thinking about it more over the past few days and I’m bumping it up to a solid 4 stars! 🙌

This was an enjoyable start to a new series by indie author David Pariseau. I’ll be honest and say that the mythology of an ancient civilisation that seeded life on multiple planets was more intriguing to me than anything else and I wish we had more of it! I’m built weird but I’m going with it 🤣

Back to the book though! Dashin, Alina, Hedrick and all of the other characters came together nicely to weave a story that had emotion, ups and downs, and the bit of anxiety that underlines the otherwise happy ending sets book 2 up for an interesting, perhaps darker and more expansive, continuation of the TreeFolk.

I enjoyed the setting of the tribe and the trees and the vibes of having found friends and family but having to prove yourself. It was a good story for multiple age groups as well which is great if you want to read it in a group.

This is a series that will appeal to a lot of people. Well done on an intriguing first novel, David!

What a great story! Gave me a smidge of Avatar vibes. It starts out with a bang (literally) and keeps it going. The relationships feel so authentic and made me really rooting for Dashin and Alina. Also, can someone please make the lanyards in real life… that would be awesome. High stakes, found family, a sweet little romance and adventure. What more could you want!

I went into Dream of Verdure not knowing exactly what to expect, and it ended up becoming one of those books that quietly sneaks into your favorites list. I was lucky enough to read it as an ARC, and honestly, I’m really glad I did because this is the kind of sci-fi + YA I love but don’t always manage to find.

The story follows Dashin, an engineer whose life completely unravels after his spacecraft is destroyed, leaving him stranded on an unfamiliar planet. He’s rescued by Alina and her friends. While they care for him and offer safety, Dashin quickly learns that staying means earning his place through a series of dangerous trials. The survival aspect is gripping, but what really pulled me in was everything happening beneath the surface.

The setting deserves special praise. The forest felt vivid and tangible, like a place with its own presence rather than just a backdrop. The world-building was detailed without being overwhelming, and the more fantastical sci-fi concepts were explained in a way that made them easy to follow and visualize.

The characters are where this book truly shines. Watching Dashin adapt, struggle, and keep going no matter how impossible things felt made him incredibly easy to root for. Alina surprised me with how much I connected to her; she’s caught between tradition and change, and her internal conflict felt very real. Their relationship develops slowly and naturally, which made their bond feel earned rather than rushed.

The supporting cast adds so much warmth to the story, especially the sense of "community" within the tribe. The theme of found family runs strongly throughout the book, and it really stuck with me. There’s also a quiet reminder woven through the story that everyone carries unseen struggles, and that idea gave the book an emotional depth I wasn’t expecting.

Overall, Dream of Verdure felt immersive, comforting, and emotionally grounded. I finished the book already missing the characters and wanting to spend more time in this world. I’m very much looking forward to continuing the series and seeing where these characters go next. 💚

Do you like Avatar? The James Cameron movie, not The Last Airbender… Because if you do then this debut is going to be right up your alley!
When Dashin is faced with disaster on the space expedition he is on, he crash lands onto the lush green landscape of Ndesa (Nnn-Des-Ah), the forests a far cry from the deserts he grew with.
Alina longs for something different in her life! While exploring the treetops she spot an ‘egg’ that falls from the sky and scorches the forest in its path. The creature inside is more similar to her than she ever expects.
Through trials (literally) and determination Alina and Dashin form a bond and they fight to help Dashin become one of their tribe.
I loved the found family aspect in this. It started out quite slow, but the book needed that in order to properly develop the relationship between Dashin and Alina. And then introducing more of the surrounding tribe and family. This is how found family and relationships should be written. And the ‘cat’. The CAT!
In saying this, I did find the writing to be quite slow for 30-40% of the book and found that it wasn’t until I had the audiobook that I really sunk my teeth into the story. Once it picked up it went really fast. There was a lot of action and high enough stakes to have me swearing at having to cook my dinner.
The narrator of the book, Lanéa, was great for Alina. Her voice was clear and I loved that the language was a little stilted and awkward while she was trying to communicate with Dashin. I do find that the voice for Alina and Dashin were very similar, with only a slightly higher pitch for Alina. This did make it a little difficult to determine who was speaking sometimes if I was away from my kindle.
As I said, if you are fans of Avatar or like fantasy/sci-fi in general then I think you will love this book. The imaginative world building, unique characters and their design, and great plot will have you wishing for book 2 the moment it comes out. This debut from the author is a great start to the Ndesa series!
Thank you to the author, David Pariseau for a review copy of this book, and the ALC of the audiobook. I truly appreciate you opening your world to me. TEAM PRITHA!

So, I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish this book because I couldn't put it down. And I'm very glad to know this is a series since I'm not ready to let these characters go. I had to sit in my feels today and think how I wanted to review my time reading it because I wanted it to sound a little more intellectual than simply gushing away about it. But I think all I can say is this is genuinely a new favorite of mine, and I feel blessed to have received it as an ARC because I might not have discovered it otherwise. As a primarily dark fantasy and horror reader, no one is as surprised as I am at how this captured my heart.

I'm not even smart enough to know how to articulate what it is about the author's writing style that made each character's personality and the way they see the world around them leap off the page as it's not overly wordy in their thoughts or descriptions, yet even the most straightforward interaction, response to the situation or eye crinkle seems to speak volumes to the heart of the characters. Plus, there are some complex fantastical concepts that were explained in such a way I could easily grasp them and visualize how they would work.

I was rooting for the characters from the first page, and invested in the cozy low to mid stakes type of plot too. I just got the sense it takes a kind soul to write characters as charming and endearing as these who I'll be thinking about for a long time and wishing I could be 'of the tribe' with too. Found family, good natured banter, leading with kindness and persevering through hardship are my favorites, and this knocked all that out of the park.

Dashin, a junior engineer, is working aboard a mining spacecraft when it undergoes complete and catastrophic destruction. After barely escaping in a damaged evacuation pod, he crash-lands on an alien planet covered in thick, lush forests.

Alina, a tree person who lives on this planet with her family and tribe, is gathering food with her friends when a massive fireball tears across the sky. She and her friends follow the flaming trail and find Dashin, strapped into the damaged pod, unconscious and injured. They bring him to their village where Alina’s family nurses him back to health. Despite the deepening connection between him and Alina, it becomes clear that in order to remain there, Dashin must become Of The Tribe. Thus, Alina trains him to complete three harrowing trials that will prove that he belongs.

David Pariseau’s ethereal prose drew me into the world of the tree people, immersing me in their culture. I loved how Alina and her family greeted Dashin with open arms, while Dashin made every good-faith effort to adapt to life in the tribe. I especially admired Dashin as a character; he is the true epitome of resilience. No matter what challenges are thrown at him, he meets them with determination and a positive attitude.

A theme that this book explores that really resonated with me was that everyone has challenges in their life, even if they do not share them. As my college swim coach used to say, “everyone’s got something.” Everyone is shaped by their prior experiences, and it’s important to remember that before judging someone.

Overall, this book was an enjoyable read, and I already feel attached to the characters and want to see more of their adventures. I will definitely be reading Book 2!

Let me tell you how my journey with Dashin and Alina began.

As I always do, I started by taking notes—setting, narrative conventions, characterisation, pace. That lasted until about page ten. By then, I was completely absorbed by the world-building and the characters, and note-taking went straight out the window. I devoured this book.

Dashin, a mechanical engineer, crash-lands on a strange planet—home to the Treepeople. Alina, a member of the tribe, finds him and decides to take him back to the village with the help of her closest friends. Once there, Dashin is faced with a harrowing choice: complete three deadly trials to earn his place among the tribe.

But first, the setting—the forest. My god. The descriptive elements of this world were so vivid that I truly believed I was walking beside Dashin and Alina through the trees. The imagery unfolded like a film playing in my mind, rich and immersive at every turn.

The characterisation is equally stunning. Not only Dashin and Alina, but the other members of the tribe—Eror, Hurza, and Kani—are all distinct, emotionally resonant, and beautifully written. And how could I forget the two cutest children I have ever encountered in a book? Solvan and Matse completely stole my heart.

The way David gradually releases nuggets of information pertinent to the unfolding mystery is exquisite and masterfully done, keeping the tension simmering and the pages turning.

The subtle undercurrent of romance only deepens the story, adding emotional weight without ever overshadowing the plot.

I stayed up past my bedtime to finish this! What a great mix of sci-fi, fantasy, and a touch of romance. If you want adventure that is also cozy, with found family and animal friends, then you will love this book. (It is YA appropriate).

The story starts off in the cold starkness of space full of technology and loneliness, but you will end up on a leafy forested planet in a tree house village high in the gently swaying trees, with warm vibes and a close community. A totally new and foreign world for Dashin, absent of the technology he is accustomed to, he becomes a mysterious alien who has crash landed in this new world. You will root for him as he struggles to prove himself worthy to join the tribe of people who live here, as he struggles to fit in and be accepted. An affection grows between Dashin and Alina, a member of the tribe who has taken it upon herself to help Dashin succeed. He has just a short amount of time to prove to the tribe he is worthy of a place amongst them in their tree village, while navigating the dangers of the forest, a growing affection for Alina, and newly discovered magic.

I rate this 4.5 stars because I was hooked from the first chapter. It is the perfect book for anyone looking for an immersive story where the forest itself becomes a main character and a captivating new world to explore.

Dream of Verdure felt like being dropped into a new world and learning how to breathe there—and I genuinely enjoyed that experience. The world-building was immersive without being overwhelming, and the emotional core of the story kept me invested.
I found myself relating to Alina more than I expected. She felt real, flawed, and easy to empathize with. Dashin, on the other hand, is a true cinnamon roll MMC—gentle, kind, and impossible not to love. Their connection was one of my favorite parts of the book. They were tied together long before they truly understood what that bond meant, and the gradual realization made their relationship feel natural and heartfelt.
The theme of found family stood out strongly for me. The supportive friendships added depth and warmth, and it’s the kind of dynamic that stays with you after you finish reading. It definitely made me long for my own chosen family—and yes, my own personal Dashin.
This is the first science fiction book I’ve read in a long time, and it reignited my interest in the genre. It balanced emotion, connection, and speculative elements beautifully. And Pritha? Absolutely adorable—I loved her so much.
Overall, Dream of Verdure was comforting, immersive, and emotionally satisfying.

Dreams of Verdure is a MUST-READ, fantastic start to what promises to be an epic fantasy series!

I was hooked from the opening scene, where Dashin and Gralan’s ship disaster had me on edge, vividly crafted like a movie.

The plot, centered on an outsider proving themselves to the Treepeople through trials, is fresh and engaging, with twists I didn’t see coming and a deeply satisfying ending.

The characters are a highlight—Dashin and Alina are brave, caring, and easy to root for, while secondary characters like Rigin and the adorable pet Pritha add heart. Even the villain, Hendrick, gets a compelling arc.

The romance between Dashin and Alina feels natural, never overshadowing the main story, which I loved.

The writing flows beautifully, with vivid descriptions, witty dialogue, and perfectly paced cliffhangers that kept me reading late into the night.

The pacing balances action, training, and character development without a dull moment.

I’m already eager for the next book and highly recommend this to fantasy fans, especially for YA readers! A must-read I’ll be sharing with my daughters.

This young adult fantasy drops you into a world of breathtaking forests that is both beautiful yet dangerous, where every shadow feels alive.

I quickly fell in love with the main characters of this dual narrative, Dashin and Alina. Dashin has to fight for his life, alone in a world designed to defeat him and tribe members who want him gone. Alina, on the other hand, is torn between the traditions of her people and the pull of her own uncharted identify. Throughout the book, you watch them wrestle with survival, friendship, belonging, and the courage to face who they really are.

The side characters aren't just for scenery or to drive the plot forward, but they each have their own motives and secrets which makes the village and day to day life realistic. The pacing is exactly what I look for in a YA fantasy- brisk enough to keep me turning pages yet filled with rich detail. I never wanted to put the book down while I was lost in the lush forests of Ndesa.

If you love immersive worlds, characters you can't stop rooting for, and high stakes adventure, this is the book for you!

I really enjoyed this read!!
Dreams of Verdue swept me straight into a world stitched together with starlight, dreams, and lush greenery. It was immersive and had a cinematic quality where you look up from the page and have to reorient yourself back to reality for a second.

What I loved most was how naturally everything unfolded. The YA tone fits the premise perfectly it never tries too hard and never overcomplicates itself. The character progression was perfected, You actually see growth and feel their shifts with them.
Talk about the family dynamic - this showed a functioning, loving, supportive family and I was here for it! We don’t get that enough. It added so much grounding to the story. There was love at the center of the whole read without being in your face.

If you’re someone who loves the heart and wonder of Avatar, A connection to nature, An emotional pull and the sense of belonging- this will absolutely hit for you.

Found family. Trials. Soft romance. Animal companions. Emotional weight that grows.

For an indie debut, this is such a strong entrance from David Pariseau. There’s imagination here. There’s heart. And I’m very excited to see where he goes next.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Two Worlds Collide in a Kaleidoscope

This is book 1 of the Ndesa Series. This book has a Prologue followed by 51 chapters so if you are looking for a short read, then this book is not what you are looking for. If you want an amazing experience into another world - THEN READ THIS BOOK.

What an amazing book!! Talk about an intensely immersive storyline! It felt like Avatar and the Hunger Games (without the threat of death - mostly) came together in a stunning visual explosion! You feel yourself flying through the trees with them. You feel the intense emotional connections the partners have with each other. You feel individuals come together and choose to be a family. Grace is given to an outsider and an insider. Love turns a lonely individual into a beloved family member. Friendships are bound more tightly together. Maturity and Respect are given and earned. Knowledge is shared and learned even when not understood.

Read the book. You won’t be disappointed and I cannot wait for book 2 to come out!!

5 stars!

Dreams of Verdure is a wonderful start to the Ndesa series. This scifi fantasy is a great first contact tale that still shows respect to cultures of less advanced technology. Pariseau writes the Tree People with complexity, majesty, and intrigue while giving Dashin adaptability and resourcefulness from his engineering training. The tale is well executed and paced, with tropes of found family and belonging playing heavily.

I also enjoyed that Pariseau plays with some scientific elements, such as different gravity strengths effecting Dashin’s capabilities. Alina and her people’s abilities were also interesting, adding a level of fantasy that was useful but well limited to ensure it was not a deus ex machina style trope.

A great YA that can be enjoyed by teens and adults alike, I thoroughly look forward to the next instalment where we learn more of this planet and the impending challenges that will face Dashin, Alina, and their people.

I branched out with this read since I'm typically not a sci-fi reader, but this book is so much more than that. The world-building is fantastic and vivid—I could truly picture the forest scenery in my mind. It's a slow burn with little nuggets of intrigue along the way, yet you're quickly invested in the two main characters and their journey.
While I really enjoyed both the female and male leads, a side character completely stole the show and captured my heart (Matse ❤️❤️). I love when a book invests just as much care in its supporting cast as in its protagonists. At its core, this story is about resilience, the idea that family isn't always blood (or even the same species in this case), and how truly hearing someone's story can help you understand them.
I'll 100% be reading the sequel!

I had the privilege of being an ARC reader for this lovely story about found families , redefining love and relationships, and finding yourself in the most unexpected of places. I loved the way David writes about the challenges in finding one’s true self and the nuances in families. Through this story he makes it clear how life may not always go to how we plan it but the way we need it too. It’s through the challenges that we find who we truly are meant to be, it’s up to us to decide to accept our fate or fight against it. I hope anyone else who decides to pick up a copy or give it a listen enjoys it as much as I. It reminded me a lot of the world of Pandora in the Avatar movie franchise so if that’s up your alley then I think you should give this a shot !

I was enthralled from the first few pages due to the emergency happening on Dashin’s ship!!

I fell in love with Dashin and Alina and I honestly wished I could have been taken into the forest with them. The way it was written really captured and described the environment and I really felt some Avatar vibes within this book and found it so much fun to read.

Found family, with such trusting friendships and caring and the added romance made this a really great read.

This is the first book in the Ndesa Series and I look forward to reading Book 2

Dreams of Verdure, by David Pariseau, is a must-add to your 2026 reading list. The book is beautifully written, with a smooth, confident flow to the prose that makes it easy to sink into from the first page. Pariseau’s jungle world is incredibly vivid and immersive, feeling less like a backdrop and more like a living environment that shapes every moment of the story. If you’re looking for a science fiction novel that transports you completely—one where atmosphere, setting, and character work together seamlessly—this is a story you can truly get lost in, and one that lingers well after the final page.

My advice, is get it, today. You wont regret it.

This was an amazing story and the author, David Pariseau created a magical world both in space and on in the jungle. The opening line grabbed me and pulled me right in. David's writing makes you want to keep reading, no matter what time it is, to see what happens with the characters. You can't help but not love the main characters, Dashin and Alina, and you want them to succeed. The supporting characters are such an amazing group and they provide good support and funny sarcastic one liners.

I received this book as an ARC and I'm so very happy to have it in my collection. I'm really looking forward to book 2.

I had the pleasure of narrating the audiobook version of Dreams of Verdure and have to say, it’s not often I get to work with such wonderful material that I truly enjoy as a reader myself. David Pariseau creates an absolutely stunning world that is so detailed without ever making me feel bogged down by the descriptions. The word I keep coming back to is lovely, just lovely how earnest the main characters are, how they listen to and support each other, and how thoughtful they are as they face challenges and grow to meet them. So if you’re in the mood for a YA sci-fi/fantasy adventure, with much more to come, I highly recommend giving Songs of Verdure a chance!

As a stay at home mum, I read in short stretches when I can and Dreams of Verdure was easy to pick up and fall back into each time. The world feels vivid and well thought out and I found myself really drawn into the setting and the characters.
I especially enjoyed the balance between adventure and the quieter, more reflective moments. The story unfolds at a steady pace, letting you really sink into the world rather than rushing through it. I loved how it left me thinking about the characters long after I had finished the book.

This was my first sci-fi book and it won't be my last!
This book had me hooked from the start. A spaceship explosion, a crash-landing on a lush planet, and a tree-dwelling tribe? Yes please. The world-building is vivid, the writing flows easily, and the story is pure adventure.
The banter is fun, the romance is a true slow burn that feels earned, and the found family trope, which is one of my all time favourites, is done so well !!
Captivating, emotional, and binge-able. If you love sci-fi fantasy with heart, add this to your TBR.

Thank you Tara for the opportunity to read this as an ARC. I’d rate it 3.5 stars rounded up. As a sci-fi fantasy blend, its world-building worked well, although I’d say it had a somewhat slow start and concentrated perhaps a little too hard on the detail. Both MCs were likeable, and once the story got started, it was interesting to follow along on their journey. Overall, it created a solid start to the series, and would likely appeal to cosy fantasy readers.

ARC review - This was a great read with imaginative scenery and characters that I fell in love with instantly. Alina and Dashin were a lovely duo that complemented each other well. If you’re into sci-fi and romance this book is perfect for you. The romance part is not over bearing and doesn’t take from the plot, so if you aren’t sure about romance you should definitely give this book a read!

A beautifully written science-fantasy novel that hooked me from Dashin's first chapter.

This story fearures a lovable cast of characters with well thought out back stories.

The concept of the Makers has me intrigued and I am keen to see how this is expanded on.

If you enjoy exploring new worlds and dont mind a strong focus on world building this book is for you!
