I was sorting out an old pile of books and came across this. I loved Rolf when I was a kid , his Brit tv shows were part of the 70s kids tv I enjoyed along with the Clangers and Morph.
However I was disturbed when I found it, how could I have possibly not seen him as a scary monster? I wanted to give my review no stars but that’s nonesense in fact sadly many past artists , Van Gogh who frequented prostitution houses , Tolouse-Lautrec, and many others have been what today that what is not acceptable, even leonardo bought bodies off grave robbers , so I gave it 4 * because it is full of excellent information on how to become an impressionistic artist. It is simple to understand even for a beginner but also is interesting to read if you come from a photo realism background and want to loosen your style. It also dives into some artists from the past who Rolf was interested in and influenced by.
I wouldn’t buy it today and in fact I won my copy, but it is an interesting read for painters and none painters alike who are interested in how artists work. So no I couldn’t give it no stars and I hope the royalties go to his descendants.
What a horrible end to a fabulous artist. I’m sorry but I just can’t like him anymore although his talent for painting was incredible.
