The Enchanted Map Series: Through the Portal captivated my 12 year old son’s attention. He sat and gave the book his undivided attention. He said, “This book has me hooked!” Followed by, “Mom, can you get me a refill so I don’t have to stop reading?” I was so excited for him to be reading a book with biblical truths and scripture interwoven in the epic adventure.

📕Title: Through the Portal: The Enchanted Map Adventures (The Enchanted Map Adventures: Book one Through the Portal)

✍️Author: Joy Joyner

📚Book Review: I knew I was in for a fun adventure the moment a talking map showed up—and "Through the Portal" didn't disappoint.

I finished this book yesterday, and it felt like the kind of story I would've absolutely loved as a kid, while still appreciating its deeper messages as an adult. Ace is an easy character to root for because he doesn't start out fearless or larger-than-life. Instead, he feels like a regular kid who's suddenly faced with extraordinary challenges and has to figure things out one step at a time.

One of my favorite aspects was the enchanted map itself. It isn't just a magical gadget; it becomes a guide that leads Ace into mysterious places filled with strange creatures, enchanted landscapes, and unexpected lessons. The dragon-like beasts and eerie forests added plenty of excitement, but what really stood out to me was how the story weaves themes of courage, trust, and faith into the adventure without feeling heavy-handed.

I also appreciated how the book addresses fear and self-doubt. There were moments that reminded me of reading "The Chronicles of Narnia" as a kid—not because the stories are the same, but because both combine fantasy adventures with meaningful life lessons. As a parent, I could easily see this sparking conversations with children about bravery and making good choices.

The reason I'm giving it 4.5 stars instead of a full 5 is that I occasionally wanted a little more detail in certain scenes, but overall the pacing kept me turning pages.

I'd recommend *Through the Portal* to kids who love fantasy adventures, as well as parents and grandparents looking for a story with positive values woven naturally into the narrative. It's an entertaining, imaginative read with a lot of heart.

The talking map and portal-hopping adventure feel fresh and exciting, with vivid worlds, mysterious creatures, and just the right touch of suspense. Ace’s journey is packed with imagination and wonder, making it an absolute joy for kids who love fantasy and exploration. What truly sets this book apart is its heart. Beneath the magic and adventure are powerful lessons about courage, overcoming fear and anxiety, trusting wisely, and growing a strong sense of faith. These themes are woven naturally into the story, never preachy, and easy for children to understand and relate to. Parents and grandparents will appreciate the positive values, while kids will simply enjoy the thrill of the adventure.
