This book had always been in my house and for some reasons I never had the urge to pick it up and read despite its beautiful paper-cover picture and its intriguing name THE NAKED GODS. Chukwuemeka Ike's The Naked Cods is such an entertaining piece, a display of power and self-aggrandizement of academics in the quest for the position of the Vice-Chancellor of the newly established Songhai University temporarily headed by an American, Dr. Mal Wilson.
On the other hand, there is a clash for the between the British and American on the supremacy of educational system or style to be adopted in the new African University. And more so, a struggle to plant persons who will perpetually maintain their interest in the newly independent nation of Songhai.
Moreover, the book is such an eclectic work, a blend of; Politics or power play between academics, government officials and the Traditional Ruler, Life on Campus and student activities, Sexual infidelities, Culture, Neo-colonial contest and subtle foreign policies to plant and guarantee their(American and British) interest in the newly independent African nation of Songhai.
Thanks to the intelligence and character of Professor Ikin who was able to see through the beautiful and alluring American Proposal and to decline it despite the pressure and nature of his ambitious wife and the over-ambitious Dr. okoro his rival. As an African, or precisely a Nigerian, I wish we have more people like Professor Ikin.
Its a beautiful read!

Having spent a few years at a new university in Africa, I could relate to the setting and some of the incidents. It is well written, with apt descriptions and touches of humour. Maybe my approach is too serious, but it falls short of satire, in my opinion. Still, it is an enjoyable read.
