[Lemon Tree Press] (1975). SB. 95 Pages. Purchased from Richard Dalby’s Library.

Charming reminiscences regarding British T.V.’s youthful days.

Well illustrated.

Mentions the likes of Caitlin Thomas, Colin Wilson, Robert Graves and Fanny Cradock in dispatches.

Contains some interesting (critical) commentary on distortion; for instance, interview editing query substitution, pre-Blair ‘sexing up’, resetting response contexts.

Prescient:

“If the day should come… when broadcasting should play to… the lowest… in man… then will the country itself have fallen…”

Lord Reith (1931)

“Indiscriminate viewers who switch on regardless, run a real risk of becoming observers rather than participants in life. The vital thing… is not only to know when to turn it off, but to learn when and why to turn it on. We watch more and more - and do less and less.”

Daniel Farson (1975)
