Favoured Imperial Concubine Goes on Strike Every Day

(English Translated Title)

The title is definitely misleading. The female lead does not go into a strike but she checks and balances her interactions with the male lead. Yunxiu does her utmost to change the trajectory of the life she dreamt about and prioritizes her kids above all else. As for the male lead, Kangxi, he is a historical figure that turns into a devoted husband step by step.

The concept is nothing new tbh. However, I absolutely loved the execution of it. It got me over a depressive slump so that's really nice

English title: Favored Imperial Concubine Goes on Strike Every Day

A different kind of historical romance novel that doesn't start with the FL as a young girl in her natal home. Instead, the FL Yi Yunxiu is already a favored consort in the emperor's harem when the book starts. However, she has a prophetic dream about what would happen if she kept fighting the other harem members for the emperor's favor and she doesn't have a good ending, so she completely changes her mindset and decides to focus on keeping herself and her sons safe instead. Her new goal in life is to make it to old age as the Noble Imperial Consort Dowager rather than to win over the emperor's heart.

However, the more she tries to stay out of harem politics and keep the emperor at arm's length, the more he clings to her, so things don't really work out the way she plans. But what she doesn't realize is that from the emperor's perspective, he's so tired of all the act that other women put up around him, so he actually appreciates it when she treats him more genuinely, even if it means she treats him more casually and doesn't pander to his every whim. I think this quote from the story puts it nicely:

From start to finish, wasn’t this genuineness what he had cherished most?

The women of the harem all wore masks—gentle, attentive, eager to please, never daring to overstep. Only Consort Yi was different. Her laughter, anger, coquetry, and sincerity were like shifting scenery, unwavering whether in public or private.

What I appreciated about this novel is that it's very realistic. It's not like the emperor stops favoring other women in his harem after he starts liking the FL more. At one point, multiple women including the FL are pregnant with similar timing, so you know the ML gets around. However, he's able to keep the physical and emotional aspects of his relationships separate and doesn't let himself fall too deeply for any one woman until near the end, when he finally realizes he's fallen for the FL. It's all part of being a good and responsible emperor; he needs to watch out for checks and balances not only among his ministers but among his harem as well.

Even though the story is categorized as slice of life, most of the story revolves around various harem schemes which kept things interesting. Pretty much each concubine or consort's actions serve to advance their agenda, which usually involves trying to ensure their son sits on the throne as well as whatever actions benefit their family. Generally there's a powerful family or minister behind each of the important consorts, so it was interesting to see that intersection of politics and harem intrigue. For example, the two ministers with the most influence in court each have a member of their family as one of the highest ranked consorts, so the enmity between the two ministers is echoed in the harem fights between the corresponding consorts.

The story was a bit depressing in the sense that you can clearly see the impact of all the harem schemes and maneuvering on the innocent children. They're all just kids, but that doesn't matter to the consorts who coldheartedly use the princes in their schemes. Some of them end up poisoned or their mother makes them sick on purpose just to have an excuse for the emperor to visit their palace. It's really sad to see.

Because this was set in the Qing dynasty, a lot of the clan names were new to me and it was a bit hard to follow. The poor translation quality didn't help. For example, the FL is from the Gorolo clan, but the translations kept it as Guoluoluo which is the literal pronunciation of the Chinese characters. And speaking of the translation, it was super hard to follow. Pronouns and names were constantly mixed up in addition to roles, so reading that "consort A was promoted to consort A" was very confusing. From my understanding, I think the FL's progression was consort to imperial consort to noble imperial consort to finally the empress in the end, but it's still not super clear to me as the translations mistranslated the roles constantly.

The FL is pretty smart. Even though she tries to stay out of harem politics as much as possible, there are some things she can't avoid. Initially most of the schemes don't focus on her but involves infighting between other harem members, but as it becomes clear that she's getting closer to the emperor, she and her sons become a target themselves. It was so satisfying seeing all the schemes against her fail and the eventual fallout when the scheme is traced back to one of the other consorts and they completely lose the emperor's favor.

Between her own smarts as well as being forearmed with knowledge from her prophetic dream, she's able to overcome every scheme and ends up in a stronger position afterwards. At the same time, though, she never resorts to dirty tricks and does everything in a more open manner. For example, when she has a feeling that two of the other concubines are colluding against her, she tries to create a rift between them by suggesting to the emperor that one consort plans the 100 day celebration for the other consort's daughter. It's this contrast that makes her stand out in the emperor's eyes compared to all the dirty tactics employed by the other consorts:

First, it was the Imperial Noble Consort, then Noble Consort Wu, Concubine Xi, Consort Ping… and now Consort Hui. The more he saw through their true natures, the clearer—and more disgusted—he became with the endless schemes and manipulations of the inner palace.

Some were foolish, some were cruel, some lacked integrity and were easily exposed.

Better to look at Xiuxiu more often—at least she could cleanse his eyes!

I loved the cast of side characters as well, mostly the princes. The author didn't focus on all of them, obviously, but the ones who were singled out all had different personalities and made for an entertaining side show. My favorite was probably the naughty 9th prince, who was reborn and retained memories of his previous life even as a baby, and his interactions in the extra chapters with his younger sister the 6th princess.

The extras at the end focusing on all the princes and princesses were adorable. Here are my favorite excerpts from them:

the 9th prince has his eye on his younger sister's enormous fortune to go into business, but little does he know that even at 6 years old, she has some ideas of her own XP

"I want to go into business too. As a Gūlún Princess, they’d be even less likely to refuse me. Ninth Brother, if I lend it to you, I’ll earn less."

She looked at her ninth brother, her eyes now tinged with the wariness of a competitor.

Yintang was dumbstruck, speechless for a long while.

She looked at her ninth brother, her eyes now tinged with the wariness of a competitor.

Ninth Prince swallowed back his frustration, watching his dreams of silver slip away before his eyes.

-------------------------

hahahaha all of the brothers imparting advice to the little princess

Little did they know, from the moment Wu Linzhu could speak, the Emperor and her brothers had already begun their preemptive defense against potential suitors.

Wu Linzhu grew up on tales of unfaithful men.

"A man’s sweet words are never to be trusted; smooth talk always hides ulterior motives," the Ninth Prince would lecture earnestly, recounting cautionary tales. "Take that Imperial Examination top scorer, for instance—born into a prestigious family yet coveting a princess’s wealth, weaving an elaborate scheme to deceive her."

"Never lower your standards or be swayed by some brat’s charms. What does it matter if he’s wealthy or brings you pastries? Such trifles could never win over my sister!" The Crown Prince would sigh gravely before producing a wooden box. "Second Brother forgot your allowance last month, so here’s this month’s—though it’s a bit light, only 10,000 taels."

"Appearances are the most deceptive. Our Wu Linzhu must keep her eyes sharp," the Tenth Prince would declare, gesturing grandly at himself. "A man like me, who knows how to cherish and pamper you, is rarer than a phoenix feather. You’ll never find another!"

"If you ever encounter a scoundrel, Eleventh Brother has a secret weapon," Yinzi would whisper, pulling out a silk pouch from his waist. "Empress Mother prepared this for me—just a sprinkle, and a villain’s eyes will go blind. No rogue would dare lay a finger on you."

Unbeknownst to Yunxiu, their daily lectures planted a seed in Wu Linzhu’s young heart:

Of all the men in the world, save for her father and brothers, none could be relied upon—each was a smooth-talking fraud.

3.9 stars!

I really enjoyed this story. It starts out pretty common but has some interesting turns. Kanxi's consort Yi has the emperor break her heart on his deathbed and afterwards her sons' fates play out leaving her desolate and heartbroken and resigned to the fact that all her sincerity for her husband never mattered.

Then she is returned back to when she was a young woman at the high of favor. Resolutely, and still heartbroken, she decides not to fight for favor and instead just focus on her children. If the emperor won't care for her, why would she need to care for him?

Sounds pretty standard and to this point it really is, however, what made this story special to me were several points:
- while there are enmity and hate in the harem, there are some true friendships too
- none of the children are demonized and they all have nice endings - not just the protagonist's children
- her blood child does not suddenly become the emperor, it is a bit of an alternate history retelling but not that badly
- the MC does not know everything and at some point she has changed enough that the past does not matter and she also makes mistakes
- there are true feelings involved for both her and the emperor, as well as many of the child characters
- multiple people remember the past life but they aren't ridiculous and unnecessary antagonists

This is a romance and the progression of the relationships is really well done.

If you read the fan translation, the first translation was better, I would suggest starting with that one and then later switching to the second one - otherwise the titles will never be clear... Also, you get used to the "Mrs" for concubines and consorts after a while... still would have felt better if they used "shi"... the connotation is just off otherwise...

8/16/25 hm - not sure if it was cuz I was more watching dramas [😅 and/or looking for next reads?] like O_o why did this take me so long?
although I also paused during reading this to read almost all the extras I found for "years after exchanging marriage" - one of my favorite cnovels ...

Anyway ... I liked it - it was a satisfying read and I'd read more by this author, but I'm not "!!!" about it. Like ... seemed FL was just treating the emperor coldly for a while - granted he did TOTALLY change. And I enjoyed the switch in history - fun historical fiction.
Felt like it was too messy with so many people rebirthed, especially with how little impact they had. And like ... FL KNEW her son P9 was rebirthed but it seemed like he was pretty useless. And she never knew P10 was?!
And it felt like others were too maybe?!

Got a bit dog blood - but not overly and not too much unlike some other authors.
Not mad I read it at all.

solid C => I do love me a love brain hero. I wish FL had gotten the chance to interact more with her family.

Favoured Imperial Concubine Goes on Strike Every Day

1 FL is YunXiu
Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper fucking annoying the translator calls all the concubines “Mrs” AYFKM 😡

4 heh after that dream she’s like “fuuuuck you buddy”

21 lol what?! P9 Yintang - newly born - is rebirthed too?

23 wait so the emperor dreamed of the padt life too … and feels guilty?!

36 bwaaahahaha “The Sixth Prince, Yinzuo, is to be posthumously adopted by my late brother, Prince Rong. His title shall be reduced accordingly, inheriting the rank of commandery prince. Given his youth, he will remain in the palace, receiving the same provisions as the imperial princes.”

41 heh that’s right “For now, the title of "favored consort" still clung to her. Viewed another way, the palace was a lonely place—rather than withering away in silence, having someone to ease the solitude wasn’t without its pleasures.
...
In the future, the emperor could favor whomever he pleased. But for now, who was to say who was truly serving whom?”

48 poor little 10 yo CP Yinreng - I’m glad he has FL in this life

49 FL is only 22-23?

53 <.< was P10 rebirthed too?

57… feels like a chunk is missing but 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t care enough to check

60 OOF girl you saved the little 10 yo CP with your foresight/advice. And thank God he listened to you!

The emperor now is ~31 … 😅 I don’t know FL’s age. Still ~23?

80 … ok ew that’s what I thought. Uhhh WTAF is the Tong(jia) family trying to accomplish if they send in their 2nd daughter who looks 7/10 like the emperor’s mom? Fucking creepy. What she’s supposed to seduce him?

90 confirmed; P10 was reborn too

93 aha - FL never actually stopped liking the emperor she just suppressed her feelings

103 go girl! Extracted a promise from him never to betray her!

(104?) P11, Yinzhi! … whoa so many time jumps - P1 got married, and his wife had a girl! And she’s pregnant again. Grand empress dowager is ill - I hope she’s okay

106 … don’t tell me P11 was ALSO rebirthed?! (P9 is now 6…)

107 ok FL is now 28…

112 confused; seems all the adults like this future crown princess - but earlier didn’t P9&10 dislike her, at least in their previous life?

122 🙄😒 “The demotion of Consort Hui to Consort Hui and the confinement of the Eldest Prince for reflection sent shockwaves through the imperial court and the inner palace like a thunderclap.” A whole fucking book of trash ass “translating”

123 😱 “For years, Her Highness had painstakingly obtained a special incense blend, mixing it into sleep-inducing incense and secretly delivering it to Consort Hui's chambers. It was lit every night, day after day, for five long years, working its influence subtly. But the Buddhist hall was different—they had no way to intervene there. If Concubine Hui regained her clarity, wouldn’t all their efforts be in vain?” … Rong better not target FL or her kids!

125 lol tbh I’m enjoying this changed history - and wow p11 is already 5?!

128 lol I literally laughed out loud when Hesheli (Longkodo’s former wife) stepped on him. Seriously the whole Tong family is shit

(132?) FL is 29 and pregnant again!
Def 132 - WTF is Longkodo doing back

137… how did they not have anyone monitoring Longkodo/his family

141 … I don’t get why the emperor was torturing 11 w/ the chili. He can’t have thought what had been sent was edible

151 🙄😒 the emperor is obviously poisoned & it’s so annoying they weren’t prepared for this. Just duh

152 uhhh malaria? 😒
Also how are they letting Ring run rampant still AYFKM

154 ok the emperor making “final preparations” is sweet
❤️ “The Emperor, now in his prime yet suffering from malaria, mustered his remaining strength to tell her, "From now on, be as bold as you wish, as unyielding as you please. No one shall dare disrespect you."”

157 ah they already poisoned Rong. Ok. (And what? Hui did poison the emperor?)

160 *wheeze laugh* “Jingchu’s poised hands trembled, surprise and joy flashing across her face. Rarely so unsettled, she looked up in disbelief. He wasn’t due back for two more days—why had he returned now?
Had Mother Yi also come back?” I love how the crown princess likes FL just as much as she likes her husband the CP 😹☠️❤️💯

164 awww ❤️ little fifth princess (and omg I need to know just how much money she got) - and now they’re sweet together
(Er I forgot to note end of main text. 165 maybe?)
166 uhhh whut? Jumbled mix of the emperor switching timelines.

167 😿 the grand empress dowager died. (I wish it had said how old she was. But dang - lived to be a great-great-grandmother - with 3 great great grandchildren!)

168 wait did FL have the fifth or the sixth princess? 🤷🏻‍♀️
… three year time jump?

169 crowned empress!

170 a princess 6 “Wu Linzhu’s treasury holds at least five hundred thousand taels of silver.” - which 💯 especially since it earlier said 100 would be a significant amount to even a noble family
😹😹☠️ “"Ninth Brother, you can’t blame me," Yin'e stammered after a long pause, shakily getting up. Five hundred thousand taels—good heavens, that could build two princely mansions! Is Sixth Sister a golden doll reincarnated?”

172 😱😹☠️❤️ tbh I’d read a whole book on this amazing 4th princess. LOL to how kickass she is

175 is here https://www.52shuku.net/yanqing/pm/h2...
Huh. Really abrupt ending. Also plot hole cuz she’d already replaced the scriptures she gave him as a birthday gift…
