This book outlines the concept of Fifth Generation Warfare (5GW) and demonstrates its relevance for understanding contemporary conflicts. Non-kinetic modes of attack and war waged by groups or non-state actors at the societal level has been termed 5GW. This book discusses the theory of generational warfare and explores the key ideas of 5GW, such as secrecy, the manipulation of proxies, the manipulation of identity and culture (including disinformation and big data), and the use of psychological warfare. These techniques are used to achieve strategic objectives, such as inducing desired behaviour and controlling human terrain, without resorting to overt war or overt violence. The text expands the debate on 5GW by exploring emerging technologies and how they could be used for maliciously shaping human society and even for maliciously changing the genetic makeup of a population for the purpose of unprecedented social control. The work closes with comments on the possibility of a Sixth Generation of Warfare, which targets technical systems to possibly collapse a society through strategic sabotage. Overall, the book demonstrates the relevance of 5GW for understanding contemporary conflicts, from the Arab Spring to the war in Ukraine, in terms of the need for dominating the human domain. This book will be of interest to students of security and technology, defence studies and International Relations.
The aim of "Fifth Generation Warfare", the title of this book, seems to be "Dominating the Human Domain", the subtitle of this book. The means to accomplish this is "Unrestricted Warfare" and "Ruleless Warfare", both titles to sections in this book. The implication is warfare by any means and every citizen can be a participant, with or without their knowledge. The following is from the section "Secrecy in 5GW":
"‘There are no warnings, no communiques, no explanations—or at least none that can be trusted—only events which may or may not be random.’ Fifth generation warfare opponents prefer to remain hidden and if that is not possible, they prefer to frame their aggressive actions as being ultimately benign. Ideally, the victims of a 5GW mode of attack would never be aware that they were under attack, or if they were aware, they would never figure out from where the attack was actually coming and who was responsible. L.C. Rees suggested that 5GW is a ‘war [in which] the enemy may fight you with a form of war that you not only can’t see. but even worse, don’t even believe in. ’ resulting in the following: ‘You never knew you were at war. You never saw what hit you. You never knew there was a chance for victory. You never knew that you were defeated. You don’t believe in any of the above.’
I completed this book on June 16, 2024. I intended to read it again before reviewing, but never got there. There are so many different things to read. If I were AI I would only need to read it once. I am more limited. Chapter 4 "Cultural and Cognitive Warfare", provides four case studies: "Stalin’s Revolution from Above and the Purges", "The Arab Spring", "Havana Syndrome", and "The Manipulation of the COVID-19 Crisis" [by the Chinese Government]. The Cognitive portion of the chapter is covered by the "Havana Syndrome" case study.
He wrote a related article, "Attack on the Brain: Neurowars and Neurowarfare" by Armin Krishnan, political science professor at East Carolina University (ECU) published in the Spring 2016 volume of "Space and Defense - Journal of the United States Air Force Academy Eisenhower Center for Space and Defense Studies"
Related information, from the law perspective, can be found in the YouTube video "The Next Frontier is Your Mind: Neurotechnologies, Human Rights and the Battle for Your Brain", published by Stanford Law School on May 17, 2024.
The author of this book, Dr. Armin Krishnan, has stated in an interview that his next book will be devoted to "Havana Syndrome". I look forward to its future publication. His other publications can be found at his CV link on his East Carolina University webpage.
When war targets thought, the strongest front is a free, discerning mind.
Krishnan’s Fifth Generation Warfare is not just a book, it’s a pair of those “special glasses” from John Carpenter’s “They Live” — once you put them on, you see the battlefield that’s been hidden in plain sight all along. Krishnan shows that war is no longer about trenches, tanks or Slavs butchering each other as a dumb proxies in a genocidal civil war for a much more darker and sinister forces behind them, or even cyberspace; it’s about the human mind as the ultimate battlefield, where influence and manipulation are the primary weapons.
He lays out how neuroweapons, propaganda, AI, biotech, and even environmental manipulation have become tools for steering entire societies without firing a shot.
Civilians are no longer collateral damage — they are the main target. 5GW, Krishnan explains, bypasses traditional armies and hits culture, perception, and behavior directly, often leaving its victims unaware they’re even under attack.
The strength of the book lies in its clarity: when bad things keep happening “for no reason,” or when those tasked with protecting citizens refuse to act, you’re likely witnessing 5GW in action. NATO’s adoption of cognitive warfare doctrine and Western governments’ “nudge units” prove this isn’t science fiction — it’s official policy.
Krishnan’s book is a cold splash of reality: war has already left the trenches and moved into our heads. He maps a new battlefield — the human domain — where influence, perception, and behavior are the objectives, and weapons are ideas, tech, and subtle coercion (neuroweapons, propaganda, behavioral science, economic and ecological pressure). The familiar triage of bombs vs. soldiers is overturned: civilians are the center of gravity, not collateral.
The author is methodical. He traces technologies (AI, biotech, neurotech, nanotech) and doctrines (psychological ops, environmental manipulation, info warfare) that make societal steering possible. He highlights how modern conflicts often lack clear belligerents: states, private actors, “deep state” elements, corporations, and empowered individuals can all be actors or proxies. Krishnan’s practical yardstick for diagnosing 5GW? Look at effects and outcomes — persistent, unexplained societal harms or official inaction can be the footprint of a 5GW campaign.
Strengths: lucid framing (human terrain as battlefield), broad tech-policy synthesis, and sobering examples showing 5GW’s real-world stakes — destabilization, social collapse, even targeted elimination. NATO’s cognitive doctrines and civilian “nudge units” get called out as evidence that this isn’t just paranoia. Weaknesses: sometimes the tentacles reach into speculative territory (weather/geo-weapons, hidden geophysical tools) where proof is thin; readers must separate documented doctrine from plausible-but-uncorroborated claims.
Some real-world flavors of 5GW: • Weaponized propaganda & disinformation → Social media campaigns shaping elections (Cambridge Analytica, Russian troll farms, faked assassinations, social media psyops). • Financial warfare → Sanctions designed to collapse economies (Iran, Russia, Venezuela), tarifs to “protect” MAGA, etc. • Cognitive warfare → NATO’s “cognitive security” doctrine, using psychology to steer populations’ perceptions and behaviors. • Ecological manipulation → Accusations of cloud seeding, drought creation, or large-scale wildfires with geopolitical fingerprints. • Biological/health domain → COVID-era narratives and counter-narratives used to fragment societies and centralize power. • Cyber + neurotech overlap → Targeted information feeds, subliminal nudging, AI-driven propaganda bots overwhelming discourse. • NGO/corporate proxies → Multinationals or NGOs advancing hidden state agendas under the guise of humanitarian work.
5GW may be complex, but resistance doesn’t have to be. The strongest defense is a free and disciplined mind — using discernment every time you engage with information technologies. You always hold the power to refuse anything that poisons your awareness. If the purpose of 5GW is to fracture society, then true resistance is in preserving, strengthening, and growing culture.
