A solid analysis of post World War II social trends in France, but Borne writes as if some statistics speak for themselves. It works best for students of French society who want an introduction to these trends. But sometimes the French academician's habit of "destroying the grand myths we live by" through numbers, numbers, and more numbers gets tiresome. Surely the statistics Borne cites don't demolish every self-perception the French have for themselves
