I received a review copy and these are my thoughts:
WHAT WAS THIS BOOK?!?!! WOW! The last 10% left my heart pounding!
Jade’s writing is beautiful, almost poetic. She has a knack for writing broken characters and manages to find an incredible balance between world building, character development and plot when many times, one of these will take a major backseat. I did not feel this in TDD.
The world that Jade creates is complex, eerie and dangerous. Wolf Hollow is an unhappy, dark, gray-scale town, populated by villains and with each book, she adds depth and intricate details to build her set.
The MC’s backstories were both terribly heartbreaking and very much a contributing factor to the people they grew up to be, but beneath all the layers of trauma and pain, we find people who are still capable of love and kindness (mostly Christopher but Calista had her moments).
Calista and Christopher are in a way, kindred spirits. Both endured physical and emotional abuse as children and were both left with physical scares.
She’s a beautiful, intelligent, badass woman, with a vendetta against men (abusers). Christopher is a cocky playboy with a flare for explosives and breaking into safes. He thought he was going to waltz into Wolf Hollow and charm everyone with his British bad boy looks and accent, get “the job done” and be out in one piece. Calista wiped the smugness right off his handsome face because she was smarter and had bigger plans for him, for them. These two made quite the team. What we get throughout the book is the peeling back of the layers and tough exteriors these two present. He lends her the light she needs to rescue what is left of her humanity after having been stripped of it by years of continued abuse, and in turn, she sees and embraces the neglected and ill-loved little boy in him. Their chemistry is undeniable and their witty banter adds a level of humour and “lightness” to an otherwise, heavier story.
The plot twists just kept coming! The last 10% of the book left me speechless and with a pounding, bruised heart, when the deepest, darkest secrets were exposed.
Loved the side-characters that were introduced and Marlin made an appearance but he was a very bad boy! He was cruel and very much the psychopath we met in book 1 but somehow, both he and Melody (who also made an appearance) were even more unhinged than I remember from book 1.
Special mention to Ronan - Calista’s sidekick, her Doberman. They had the sweetest relationship and interactions.
I wasn’t sure how the story was going to end, but I was very happy with the ending. It was very satisfying after EVERYTHING that had happened!
*As always, please check trigger warning before picking up any dark romance. TWs include, but are not limited to: violence (physical, psychological/emotional), abuse (in the past), gore and torture, open door spice.
