My life is…fine. Quiet, predictable, and free of any danger of rebreaking my (mostly) mended heart. Or at least it is until an ultimatum from my best friend leaves me with just two weeks to invite a man on a date and successfully go on said date.
If I don’t fulfill his conditions? He’ll unleash his wife’s cringeworthy cousin on me.
It should all be laughably easy. Unless you’re an awkward, introverted perpetual grad student who can’t remember the last time he went out with anyone.
At least I know exactly who I want to ask. If only I can work up the courage…
The new barista at my favorite coffee shop is stunning. Flirty and charming, he has a dazzling smile that leaves me weak in the knees and lucky to be able to string together the words of my usual coffee order. He’s a million miles out of my league, and I might have accidentally dumped a cup of scalding coffee down his front the first time I met him.
And yet, every time he sees me, he calls me sunshine.
It can’t mean anything, can it?
Tristan
I don’t date. I don’t date and I don’t do messy. That word doesn’t even begin to describe the hell of a relationship I just escaped, and I am never going down that road again. Nope, not a chance.
Not even for Cute Latte Guy, the adorably shy, doesn’t-have-a-clue-how-sexy-he-is customer with the deliciously sunset-pink blushes that’ve got me feeling all kinds of feelings. The warm fuzzy type that he’s got no business stirring up in me.
Trouble is, when he invites me out for dinner, it turns out I just can’t bring myself to say no.
I can keep this casual, right? After all, that’s the one thing I’m good at. One night with him, a little fun, and he’ll be out from under my skin for good. Even if there is something about the way he looks at me, with those sweet, kinda sad eyes of his, that makes me wonder if, for once in my life, someone might just care enough to see the real me.
And oh yeah, did I mention that I’m his new neighbor? There’s nothing too messy about that, is there?
Color of Sunshine is a dual 1st POV MM romance between a jaded golden retriever barista with a heartbreaking past and the shy, sweet-as-can-be PhD student who makes him feel safe to love and be loved for the first time. Their story features anonymous piano duets, first date embarrassment, forced proximity, a seven-year age gap, lots of sweet and oh-so-spicy scenes, hurt/comfort dynamics, love after loss, meddling but devoted friends, and a guaranteed HEA. Color of Sunshine is book 1 in the Colors of Us series, but can be read as a standalone.
Beautiful story, even made me cry a few times, which books rarely do. Tristan is so sweet but also broken and Jesse puts him back together. So glad I got to beta read this one :)
I don’t usually gravitate toward slow-burn romance, but this one completely won me over. Tristan and Jesse’s story is incredibly sweet, with a dynamic that unfolds in such a satisfying and emotional way. Tristan comes across as easygoing and charming on the surface, and his nickname “sunshine” for Jesse feels playful at first—but by the end, it carries a deeper meaning that fits them both perfectly. Beneath that relaxed exterior, though, Tristan is far more complex and quietly broken, which adds a layer of depth I really appreciated.
Jesse’s development was just as compelling. Watching him grow stronger with each chapter—and slowly reveal a more unhinged, dominant side—was honestly captivating. That shift in their dynamic was handled so well, and it made their connection even more intense and rewarding.
Overall, this is a beautifully written romance with a perfect balance of softness and edge. If you enjoy sweet slow burns with emotional depth, a nerdy top, and a bratty bottom, this is absolutely worth the read.
"my sunshine"
🎨 Trauma & Healing 🎨 slow burn 🎨 Grief 🎨 Who hurt you 🎨 Rimming, 69, dirty talk
Color of Sunshine by Lucia Laurence is the kind of hurt/comfort romance you always want. Two men who have been hurt before, and are not looking forward for more heartbreak, but instead find the part of themselves that were missing as they heal and hold each other up. Trstian and Jesse worked in a way only people who have been deeply hurt and know what it's like to survive can, and watching them together was such a sweet feeling.
I received an early copy of this story for my honest review.
I enjoyed getting to know Jesse and Tristan. Jesse was adorable, always flustered over Tristan and blushing. The piano duets through the apartment walls were so sweet as was Jesse doing things like bringing Tristan a jacket after work because he was worried he’d be too cold. The way Tristan made Jesse feel important simply by listening to his interest was great. I liked seeing their relationship development.
I do think that with all the grief Jesse had and the trauma Tristan dealt with they both could have benefited from talking to someone to sort some of it out. It may have led to Jesse being able to make more solid decisions when it came to moving forward with Tristan in the beginning and provided Tristan with the tools to be less on edge. Definitely something they would have needed to be ready for though!
The side characters were fun! Reagan with her smutty kindle books was a nice counterpart to Tristan and Alex meddling in Jesse’s life while his wife scolds him was funny. I’m glad I picked this up.
I found this book posted in a MM group I’m a part of on Facebook and thought it sounded right up my alley!
The story was very beautifully written, very descriptive and emotional. Tris and Jesse are both hurting, holding back from love for their own reasons. The simultaneous slow-burn and insta-love trope was different, but the author managed it well.
Considering the themes of the book, I’d consider it pretty low angst. It was a very sweet love story between two people who very much deserved it. If you’re looking for your next achingly sweet book, this is the one for you!
I found this book via one of the MM reader FB pages, and was immediately intrigued by the blurb. It sounded like such a cute and sweet setup, and did not disappoint!
Color of Sunshine is a well-written, heartfelt story of two men each healing from their past - one from grief of loss, and one from past abuse. I love hurt/comfort stories, and Tristan and Jesse were the best kind. The relationship was one of mutual support, respect and love, each helping the other in turn and providing a safe place for healing and growth.
Lucia Laurence did a wonderful job building three dimensional characters, and developing their relationship on a way that felt natural and real. No angst for the sake of angst, no painful third act breakup, just a real story of how the right relationship can make each person a better version of themselves. Will definitely be watching for more books from her in the future.
Very sweet love story and the characters are quite captivating together. Was a somewhat slow burn (it did spice up nicely later on)… but also also very wordy with tons of inner dialogue with each MC. Much of it repetitive. I can totally see where some would enjoy this but the whole story basically takes place in one small house with snippets of a coffee shop. Just a bit too simple overall.
I absolutely loved this book. Jesse and Tristan’s story was everything I look for in MM romance. It had that perfect hurt/comfort vibe, but without unnecessary toxicity or drama, just two characters being genuinely sweet to each other from start to finish.
Both Jesse and Tristan felt real and endearing in their own ways. Jesse’s vulnerability mixed with quiet strength, and Tristan’s warmth hiding his own scars, made their connection even more special. Their relationship built on care, patience, and tenderness made my heart melt.
And yes ! the spice was so well done! Not just hot, but meaningful, every intimate scene showed trust and affection as much as passion.
By the end, I had the biggest smile on my face. This book left me with a full heart and that cozy, satisfied feeling you only get when you’ve read something truly beautiful.
Highly recommend if you want an MM romance that’s sweet, healing, and sexy all at once. Jesse and Tristan will stay with me for a long time.
Color of Sunshine by Lucia Laurence is a slow burn hurt/comfort story between two men who have been hurt before but find what they need in each other. Jesse Eldridge is a PhD student working toward a degree in medieval European studies. 5 years ago, his boyfriend Stephen died in a car accident where he was driving, and even though it wasn’t his fault he can’t get over the guilt he feels, not only for the accident but also if he tries to move on with someone else. He isn’t close to his family but has found a brother and family in his friend Alex, his wife, Ellie, and their 2 girls. As time has gone on, he has become more reclusive, just staying in his small studio apartment on half of the top floor of an old Victorian house near campus working on his dissertation. Because of this Alex has threatened to set him up on a date with Ellie’s horrible cousin if he doesn’t ask someone out in two weeks. When he gets home wondering just who he could ask out, he sits down at the old piano that was left in the apartment and starts to hesitantly play ‘Swan Lake’ that he learned from online lessons. To his surprise he hears his new next door neighbor play with him. The next day he goes to do research in his favorite coffee shop, Upshot, and he ogles the new barista, Tristan, who he hasn’t seen before. Tristan has recently moved to Seattle. His childhood wasn’t great with a mother who was an addict and 2 years in a foster home that was better, but then he got sent back to his mother. They moved around and he never graduated high school, leaving when he could. He also had a string of bad relationships, with the last one being abusive, so he left to get as far away as he could and hoped Josh wouldn’t come looking for him. All of this left him feeling like he was unlovable. He liked working at Upshot as the vibe was low key and slow and especially liked working with the other barista, Reagan and his boss, Mitchel. Tristan is also an amazing painter and paints whenever he can, although he doesn’t think he is and has never tried to sell his pictures or show them to anyone. When someone knocks on his door and he sees Jesse they are both shocked that they are neighbors. Jesse asks him on a date, and Tristan surprises himself when he says yes because he doesn’t date and usually only sees someone one time. On it they talk about their lives and have a good time but when it is time to say good-bye Tristan panics because he wants to be the kind of guy Jesse needs and deserves but he can’t make the same mistakes he made in Tucson with Josh so he kisses him on the cheek and leaves which makes Jess wonder what went wrong. But when Tristan shows up at his door because the heater in his room quit working Jesse takes him in and finds out he really likes him but he doesn’t do relationships, and he’s not sure he can, but he wants to try. That begins their relationship, each with a lot of baggage that they have to go through. Jesse eventually tells him about Stephen and that he’s not sure he can be fully intimate with him but then he realizes that Stephen would want him to be happy. Josh showing up is always in the back of Tristan’s mind but he really wants Jesse and he finally tells him about what happened in Tucson and how abusive he was. They started dating and had some very hot love scenes as their feelings grew. Tristan calls him his sunshine and is always happy to be with him. He trusts him and Jesse makes him feel safe, something he hasn’t had before. They go to Pike Place Market and Tristan sees the ocean for the first time. He also goes to Alex and Ellie’s with Jesse and everyone loves him. They are both falling in love with each other but are scared to say it. Until bad luck finds Tristan but Jesse comes running in and takes control. Realizing what had happened, they both say ‘I love you’ and know they will do everything they can to stay together. I really enjoyed this story. Jesse was sweet, kind, and caring but just couldn’t seem to move on until he found Tristan. Tristan had so many bad things happen in his life he wasn’t sure if anyone could love him. He slowly but surely found love with Jesse who took his time and told him he was worth caring about every time he could and Jesse learned how to get over Stephen and find real love with Tristan. Alex, Ellie, Reagan, and Mitchel all added to the story as they helped them realize they should be together. And Josh got what was coming to him. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like slow burn, hurt/comfort stories involving men who have had a lot happen in their lives that they have to overcome and who learn what love is by being together and showing each other every day.
I have been sitting on this book for so long. This was the first book by Lucia that I’ve read and it will NOT be the last. Tristan and Jesse are so amazing. I loved the amount of affirmation and love that was built into this book. Two MCs with their own hang-ups, terrified of pursuing their connection, but completely unable to stop themselves.
It had such a huge soulmate vibe to it with how hard they struggled against themselves. One MC was afraid he wasn’t worthy of love, the other MC was terrified to trust in love. But no matter how hard they internally struggled with their own self-worth, externally they were completely unable to deny the pull between them.
The shmexy times and even their feelings for each other were not a slow burn in this book, BUT their ability to accept themselves and accept the totality of their hearts and their trust in each other was definitely a slow burn, and absolutely chef’s kiss.
I loved the found family vibe, not just with Tristan finding family through Jesse’s best friend, but also with Tristan finding friends of his own through his coworker and affirmation and support from his boss. His boss was one of my favorite characters because he built Tristan up for no reason other than because he was just an awesome guy.
Another thing I have to point out is the coffee shop meet cute at the beginning was EVERYTHING. I was squealing and kicking my feet in the air through that entire scene. It made me fall so hard for both characters. The stolen glances, the blushes, the blatant flirting and ogling. It is absolute perfection and probably one of my absolute favorite meet cutes I have ever read.
From beginning to end, this book grabbed my heart and held on tight. I loved Jesse and Tristan, I loved Tristan’s coworkers, and I loved Jesse’s best friend, Alex, and Alex’s family (especially the twins). This has piano duets played through the wall, a talented artist who struggles with being confident in his work, an older shy MC struggling for inspiration to finish his dissertation, and a younger barista MC with all the talent and sweetness! All the steam, hurt/comfort, and beautiful MCs that couldn’t deny their hearts no matter how hard they tried. Such a sweet, beautiful read! LOVED IT!!!!
This book felt like a warm hug wrapped in heartbreak and healing. It’s a low angst, sweet romance that still manages to dig deep into emotions.
Jesse, a PhD student weighed down by grief and guilt, finds an unexpected light in Tristan, the gentle barista at his local café. From the very first interaction, you can feel the quiet pull between them. Jesse’s hesitance, Tristan’s soft kindness, it’s the kind of connection that makes your heart flutter as you read. When Jesse finally works up the courage to ask Tristan out, it feels like a triumph not just for him, but for you as the reader too.
What struck me most was how real these characters felt. Both Jesse and Tristan carry scars from their past. Jesse mourning what he’s lost, Tristan escaping the shadows of an abusive relationship. Their brokenness isn’t portrayed as weakness, but as something achingly human. At times, their pain made my chest ache, but it was the way they slowly learned to trust, to open up, and to heal each other that truly stole my heart.
This story is the perfect example of hurt/comfort done right. There were moments that brought tears to my eyes, but just as quickly, there were parts filled with such joy and tenderness that I found myself smiling through the ache. Watching them grow into each other’s safe place was beautiful and deeply moving.
Lucia’s writing has a quiet elegance to it, gentle, emotional, and brimming with sincerity. It’s not just a love story, it’s a reminder that even the most broken pieces can come together to create something whole again. I’ll definitely be reaching for more of her books after this one.
🚨💓 New Comfort Read Alert Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (The most delicious slow burn!)
The Vibe: In a world where everything is go, go, go, this book was the perfect reminder to slow the hell down. I usually gravitate toward fast or medium-paced reads, but this medium pace paired with a slow burn was absolutely delicious. I could feel the warmth pouring off the pages—not just the heat, but literal, soul-deep warmth.
The Breakdown: • Hurt/Comfort Supremacy: This is the theme that reigned supreme. Jesse and Tristan were both at the tail end of their healing journeys and found each other at the exact right moment. Jesse seemed like a man just barely existing, but Tristan’s presence brought him fully back into the land of the living. • The Dynamic: Tristan is sweet, sexy, and exuberant, but he was struggling to open his beautiful heart or acknowledge his own brilliance thanks to a painful past and an abusive ex. Then there’s Jesse. That man’s soft, unwavering strength was exactly what Tristan needed to finally feel safe. If ever there were two mcs that deserved a HEA, it was these two babies. • Seattle Blooms: These two bloomed together even in the cold, rainy streets of Seattle. Watching them find each other was like watching the sun come out after a long winter.
The Verdict: If you need a break from the chaos and want a story that feels like a sunbeam, read this. It’s a beautiful reminder that even when you’re just barely living, the right person can pull you back into the light. I’m still glowing from this one. 🥹☀️
This was an adorable hurt-comfort story, and my first by the author. Thanks to a random Facebook post, I took a chance on an ARC, and I couldn't be more pleased. Tristan is a barista with a difficult past, but he has a sunny personality and aura. One day he sees sunshine walk up to his counter in the form of a somewhat shy PhD student. They have a fun first interaction and leave both wanting more but neither is sure they can do that. Tristan is a serial hookup artist after leaving his last relationship. Jesse feels unworthy of love, he lost his love and he feels responsible on several levels. But something draws them to each other and it gets harder to deny. But Jesse has another draw, through the wall of his apartment, his mysterious musician. The day that Jesse decides he's ready to take a chance, it will bring him a greater joy than he's ever felt. But there is still a dark cloud that sit over his heart full of guilt, hurt, lost love and an inability to let go. Can he give his heart to another in a complete and full way? Should it be Jesse or his mystery neighbor? Would they even want him? Would they be understanding about his storm? This dual POV teaches us a lot about the sunshine after the rain. And while 98° says it best, it is a reality. Some times a person can be the one to pull you to the other side, the dry side. They can offer the relief that you have been seeking while learning more about yourself and the things that excite you and fuel your passions. This was such a sweet story with a slow burn but with fun along the way.
I received a free advanced copy from the author and am leaving an honest review.
Perhaps it is time for Jesse to start dating again, and with his best friend pushing him he thinks that maybe the new barista that has caught his eye might be a good chance to take the leap. But Tristan doesn’t date, and he has reasons from his past to avoid it, but there’s something about Jesse he can’t say no to.
This story went beyond the standard meeting of two men that begin to instantly fall for each other. There is a lot of emotionality in the beautiful writing, as both Jesse and Tristan have to overcome personal doubts and past trauma as they embrace the idea of a special connection that’s worth every risk. I liked both these characters and the relationship building was swoony until it got super steamy. Jesse and Tristan really go beyond physical attraction, appreciating every part of the other and were both supportive, thoughtful and kind. A really enjoyable read. 4.5 rounded up
Firstly thank you to Lucia for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. And apologies for the delay in getting the review out!
This was a delightful read. Tristan and Jesse are intricate and complex characters with their own histories and personalised which really shine through on the page in their individual PoV chapters. It was easy to immerse myself in the story and forget about the world for a little while!
The story was a little slow at points, particularly the first half or so of the book, where the set up is happening and we are getting to know the world. But that’s no bad thing - I live for books that are more character driven compared to plot driven. It’s a nice experience to have a change of pace. And don’t worry, enough happened that had me turning the pages as the book progressed!
Overall, a really lovely read. This is an author to look out for.
This was a really sweet pleasant read. This a hurt/comfort with low angst all wrapped up in a big fluffy blanket. Jesse and Tristan are two lovely character that have been hurt in the past, both scared to love and are drawn together by coffee and music. I loved the connection they had from the moment they met, and as they took their relationship one day at a time, I was smiling watching them fall in love. There are some scenes that are heart in mouth but this added to story. This is a story that I will reread and I am looking forward to reading future works
4.5⭐️ only bc they’re both the most perfect sweetie boys on the planet. Their love is so pure and real and built up so beautifully. I wish Tristan was honest completely about Josh and told Jesse that he was messaging him. And I wish he wouldn’t have called him sunshine every other word. But I do love them. It was a fluffy sweet read even tho their pasts were so heartbreaking. I also love that they didn’t stray from each other even tho they both had thoughts to leave they just physically couldn’t bc their connection was so strong. Def a sweet palate cleanser
Started off really sweet and promising but I feel like the issues weren’t explored enough and there was so much repetition of phrases. Butterflies and moans and blushes and ffuck yessss. It got a bit boring when nothing else was really happening. And I spent all that time wondering why Tristan didn’t change his number or look at his phone enough to know he was being tracked with an app, and when Josh finally turned up, he was just too easy to get rid of. I ended up skimming the end because it was just… not quite there for me. Could’ve been shorter and would’ve been better.

Sweet romance between the barista and the grad student. Tristan, the barista, has an abusive boyfriend stalking him. Jesse is still getting over a car accident that took the life of his boyfriend. They meet and it's instant attraction. LOTS of spice in this book. The ex-boyfriend becomes an issue towards the end of the book. And then there's the HEA.
Nice, long-ish romance between 2 complex characters
Jesse is adorable or at least that’s how he’s made out to be! Don’t get me wrong he is adorable but he’s an onion baby! Layers! All the layers!!!
And when his new sunshine inspired neighbour Tristan moves in - the meet cute is delightful and repeats itself over and over until the boys finally realise that fate is telling them something!!
This book is just heartwarming and snuggly! The perfect story to warm you up on a miserable winters day!!!
Standalone | Hurt/Comfort | Jesse x Tristan Dual 1st | KU | HEA ✨ Sunshine! ✨ This was such a delightful read, super heartbreaking at times. Both MC's have a past that brings them pain but it was so nice for them to find comfort in each other ✨ I would say its a slow burn it terms of them taking things slow to work through each others pasts and feelings ✨ Despite the topics in the book it is low angst with no third act break up which is always a win for me
Oh these boys! Jesse and Tris are each so broken in their own way, and each so loveable and sweet despite it all. I loved seeing them learn to trust each other and find there HEA. No angst, no drama (between the love interests), just sweet, passionate, swoony romance...and spice! Omg, those two have chemistry!! 🥵 Loved this book from beginning to end.
4.5 ⭐️ This is such a beautiful story. Loved the neighbor is my barista and I'm hooked on them both. The surprise of finding out they are the same guy was written so well. I love how they were brought together in 2 different ways and found such a beautiful connection together.
definitely suggest y'all read this. it's just soo good!
Absolutely LOVED this book! Jesse and Tristan (especially Tristan, because I'm a sucker for characters with heartbreaking backstories) are so perfect. I highly recommend trying this sweet story out! ❤️ The spice when it started? It truly spiced! But I think the spice level for me is about a 3 and a half chillys. . . small spoiler . . . . . . . . . . . . Those poor blue-balls though 😂
Love love loved this!!!! Literally can’t even put into words how much I loved this book! Urgh made me feel so giddy while reading this. Absolutely adore Tris and “Sunshine” these two were literally made for each other. So glad they got the happy ending they deserved.
