I loved the black and white contrast, hitting on the culture of NOLA. The rhymes are fun and the book is sturdy and wipeable for tiny, messy hands. I also like the idea of a book meant to stimulate visual and brain development.
“High-contrast” is in the title and is certainly reflected in the black and white, simple drawings of the sights in New Orleans such as steamboats, live oak and cypress trees, musical instruments, alligators and more. Text is in bold print, is never more than a handful of words and several of those are the sounds of New Orleans. The format encourages both reader and listener to make noises as pages are turned and with thick, simple line drawings, children can trace each object with or without a caregiver’s help making this a multi-sensory experience for babies and toddlers. However, I do wish that other sights in New Orleans were used instead of resorting to two different trees and two types of water craft, possibly a shrimp/crawdad/crawfish or a mask.
Thanks for sharing a finished copy of this board, Garrett County Press.
What a delightful book for babies and toddlers! They will be introduced to the amazing sights and sounds of New Orleans in a simple and engaging way. The rhythmic text will grab their attention and introduce them to new words and expressive sounds. The black and white colored illustrations adds a creative touch and richness to the book's visual element and atmosphere. I especially like how the book highlights memorable parts of the city, celebrating it's unique history and culture. Families will have a wonderful time bonding over this beautiful book! It would make the perfect gift that's full of fond memories to cherish forever.
