FBI Agent Domini Walker #5
The Quiet Shroud of Snow
A body in the snow. A child’s footprints vanishing into the woods. A killer still out there.
FBI Agent Dom Walker has seen her share of violent scenes, but this one’s different. A teenage girl lies half-buried in Central Park, snow thick as silence. Nearby, a second set of footprints, small, fast, and heading deeper into the storm. A child is missing. A predator is loose. The NYPD doesn’t want the Bureau involved, but Dom isn’t here to score points. She’s here to bring someone home.
With sharp-tongued analyst Lea Peck, brilliant researcher Mila Pascale, and forensic accountant Owen Whyte at her side, Dom follows the trail from New York’s frozen skyline to the political shadows of Juneau, Alaska.
What begins with a murdered girl, unravels into something far stranger: an abduction, a cover-up, and a powerful financial machine built to erase problems before they make noise.
But Dom doesn’t answer to power. She serves the voiceless and the missing. And this time, her grit may be the only thing that brings a child home.
When the storm clears, only one truth will remain.

I’ve read each of H.N. Wake’s thrillers, and FBI Agent Dom Walker is my favorite protagonist. She’s smart, she’s driven, and while she has her own ghosts, she uses them to her advantage. Dom Walker returns in the fifth of the series, The Quiet Shroud of Snow.
When the body of a teenage girl is found in New York’s Central Park on a snowy night, Agent Walker is called to the scene. Normally, this would be NYPD’s jurisdiction, so why is she there? The detectives on the scene spotted footprints leading away from the body, indicating more than one victim.
Indeed. A kidnapping has occurred, and as readers of Ms. Wake’s stories know, this will lead down a complex path, but Dom Walker will hunt down those responsible. Naturally, Lea Peck plays a key role, even taking on a surprising adventure toward the end, along with Agent Owen Whyte, who happens to be Dom’s boyfriend. Normally working as an accountant for the agency, Whyte steps out of his comfort zone several times in this book. Stay tuned for the next installments, folks. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing much more of Agent Whyte.
The kidnapped victim is something of a child prodigy, and that was a fascinating part of the story. As usual, the scenery, the plot, and the characters all mesh nicely. When does Dom Walker number 6 come out? Tomorrow would be too late!

This was a solid read but not the absolute best in the series. This is an excellent series, I just wouldn’t rate this book equal to the previous books. Dom is tough and smart and with Lea as her uber smart partner-they make an unstoppable team. Lea was still doing her thing but Dom seemed a tiny bit off. In general, this one seemed more procedural. The ending was legit and definitely set me up for the next installment.
As an aside, the editing was awful but it didn’t detract for the overall reading of the book.

Five great books in a row
I rarely stick with a series of books but these were all such excellent stories I couldn't resist. Only thing was I wondered if the proof reader had been sacked after book four as there were so many grammatical errors they became a bit irritating. I'd really like to know how a book gets published with so many errors. Someone must drop the ball. Anyway still a fantastic read if you're not someone who notices mistakes like me.

The small but mighty crew of Dom Walker and co are at it again, but this kidnapping doesn’t follow the usual rules. Nevertheless, the unique skills each team member brings to the table enables them to make headway even as the clock ticks.
It’s clever and fast paced yet there is time to get to know some of the crew better and to learn new stuff, like where best to look for fraud in a balance sheet to what happens as hypothermia sets in.
Another great read in this series.

against the law
Certainly there has to be a law against ending a series like this! SERIOUSLY! This doesn’t make me happy at all.
