Jeremy Carter: The Swell of Hope and Fury
by Lior Zelering
I received a complimentary copy from Rowanvale Books and am voluntarily leaving a review.
In Jeremy Carter: The Swell of Hope and Fury, Zelering crafts a tale that feels both intimate and immense, a collision of inner turmoil and cosmic consequence. What begins as one young man’s search for purpose crests into a story of loss, power, and the dangerous weight of discovery.
Zelering writes with an urgency that mirrors his protagonist’s restless spirit. Jeremy’s world-half sunlight, half shadow-is drawn with precision: surf and saltwater, friendships that tether him to the ordinary, and a secret that drags him far beyond it. The narrative undulates between hope and dread, much like the tide itself, revealing how swiftly light can twist into something unrecognizable.
There’s poetry in the chaos here. Every surge of action hides an undertow of meaning; every choice Jeremy makes ripples outward, testing the fragile seam between humanity and ambition. It’s a story that speaks not just of alien forces and peril, but of what remains when belief fractures and survival demands reinvention.
The Swell of Hope and Fury is less about victory than it is about endurance, it's about holding fast when the sea itself turns against you. A bold, haunting meditation on change, consequence, and the dangerous promise of the unknown.
I recommend this book to readers who crave stories that balance introspection with intensity—those drawn to the pulse of adventure yet anchored by emotional depth. Fans of character-driven science fiction and fantasy, where moral boundaries blur and the heart must wrestle with its own reflection.
It will especially resonate with readers who enjoyed works like Neal Shusterman’s Scythe, Pierce Brown’s Red Rising, or Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking trilogy-tales where courage, consequence, and identity collide beneath the weight of impossible choices.

This is an exciting tale with lots of action and some great characters, it is reminiscent of being in a computer game at times, especially with the pace of some of the scenes. Jeremy is an engaging character, who develops well throughout the book. Lucas is also interesting and great that he is in a wheelchair as this gives another dimension to the story and normalises wheelchair use.
The story opens with a a few twists and turns and these continue throughout the book, there were definitely a few events that I didn't see coming, they all tied in nicely though. I loved the scene with Jeremy and his sister early on in the book, but I don't want to give away spoilers. I enjoyed Sophia's story and would have liked to have seen a bit more from her.

An interesting science fiction take for young adults, using references to Chinese folklore and modern-day technology, along with setting it in the backdrop of the surfing community in America. The target audience would definitely enjoy it the friendship between Jeremy, Lucas and Sophia; the fight against good and evil; and the training provided by wise Mr Zhang. The author’s use of creative vocabulary also makes for a vivid read. Whilst I would have perhaps dedicated more time to the different setting descriptions, it’s evident that other detail, especially that surrounding the physical battle scenes, is vivid. The suspended ending will doubtless make readers keen to continue with the second instalment.

Jeremy Carter: The Swell of Hope and Fury is a fast-paced young adult adventure full of action, friendship, and globe-spanning intrigue. Lior Zelering blends thrilling set pieces with moments of warmth, making Jeremy and his crew both relatable and fun to follow. The story moves at a breakneck speed, though occasionally the action overtakes the emotional depth—slowing down at key moments could make the stakes feel even stronger.
Overall, it’s a spirited coming-of-age tale that fans of YA fantasy and fast-paced mysteries will enjoy.

When it comes to science fiction stories, I am all in, and I am always happy to discover a fresh voice. The book written by Lior Zelering might be intended for the young adult audience, but it is perfect for those of us who are a bit older. Set in the surfing community of America, it blends a lot of different elements, including Chinese folklore. It is particularly this blend of influences that make it interesting to read. I loved the main characters – Jeremy, Lucas, and Sophia – I think they are excellently contoured, and their friendship is definitely a strong point in the story. As always, I enjoyed reading a story that speaks of the fight between good and evil, especially since the author managed to create vivid scenes. There is plenty of suspense to keep things interesting, I really enjoyed how the story unfolded, and the ending was spot on. Will there be a second book? Honestly, I hope so! I received a free copy of this book from Rowanvale Books, but the opinion I posted is my own and not biased in any way.
