If you have to read an introductory environmental science book, then this is the one to choose. It's interesting, well-written, to-the-point and written at an appropriate level. Each chapter is pretty much self-contained to boot, so if you're reading sections rather than reading the whole thing then everything will still make sense. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone doing an entry-level enviro science course, or to people who are just interested in knowing more about environmental problems in the world.
The edition I read was quite old, hence the deduction of a star due to less-relevant examples and old data. Naturally, the scientific stuff still holds.
