If you love journaling and crafts, this book is for you! Tons of illustrations, letters, decor, animals, color palettes, and much more for your projects! Thanks to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for this ARC, to be published on April 7th, 2026.
I received an e-book ARC from Netgalley for an HONEST review. Having only seen the ebook format, I cannot attest to the paper quality, nor the printing. I’d love to see one in my hands. If you enjoy the vibe of the front cover color palette and are into collage, journaling, scrapbooking, etc, you’ll enjoy this book. There are so many diverse options to go with whatever your project is. Full page art, labels, letters, maps (love), museum art, art supplies, sheet music, LOTS of flowers and botanicals (love) and so much more. Each page has one printed side, so you don’t have to make the often hard choice of which image to sacrifice. There are just a couple random pages that didn’t fit with the vintage theme and are more saturated color, but those are some of my very favorite. I can see this book perfect for this time of year. Nature waking up, starting gardens, flowers blooming, just…yeah. From the digital copy I reviewed, I love it. I can’t wait to see one in person.
I like the Roomytown aesthetic. And ever since my friend showed me her yearlong collage project I have been interested in creating my own collages. A book from Roomytown full of images is a perfect fit! It was fun to look through and spot some of my favorite Roomytown graphics. There is a wide range of shapes and sizes to use in variety of projects. A niche book but a gem for the right person! Thank you to the team at Roomytown, Chronicle Books, and NetGalley for the eARC.
Before I say anything else, important context: I'm reviewing an ebook copy of this book, but this book is absolutely intended to be engaged with in print format! Thus, my review speaks to the content alone, not to the paper type, print quality, etc. Those are also important factors...but personally, I'm just looking at the pretty pictures!
Collage is one of my favorite art forms AND I'm a bullet journaler, so I'm a sucker for collage books. If you're not familiar with the concept, these are books of curated images (usually public domain, though sometimes created by the artist or publisher just for the book—in this case, I believe the images are the former [the end of the book credits a few sources, though not all]).
The images themselves are a thoughtful mix of backgrounds, isolated images, labels, letters, and color wheels/swatches, heavily featuring flowers and French words in particular. The images are all illustrated and follow a similar style—though it seems like their sourcing differs—so in a way, what you see is what you get. If you like the style of the imagery on this book's cover, you're in for a treat. If not, this book probably isn't for you.
I appreciated the curators' consideration of how the book will be used—it looks as if each page has a blank back, so readers don't have to make hard choices between one image or another, and images have been set apart from one another and cleaned up from their source materials so they'll be easy to cut out and reuse. Ultimately, though, I personally had trouble imagining the images placed together as a cohesive collage on their own; instead, they felt more like decor pieces that would supplement a larger work, especially given the heavy emphasis on labels and lettering. That's not a flaw, just a quirk! To me, it means that this book would perhaps be better suited to bullet journalers or junk journalers than those focusing on making pure collages, but it all depends on your workflow. It's not like most folks are just pulling from one source anyway!
In the right hands, this book will be a treasure. Definitely a cool find!
Thanks to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the temporary ebook copy! All opinions are, of course, my own.
The art seems to have a lot of compression artifacts - I'm not sure if that's due to NetGalley's system, the publisher's, or the antique nature of the art itself. I hope the issue is corrected prior to being sent to print.
Otherwise, the art is in line with the stated aesthetic (antique) and has a lot of variety. There are frame styles that would be perfect for small photos. There's a bunch of different label styles, but my favorites are the spread open blank books. Lots of interesting backgrounds and patterns. Pages upon pages of small and large stand alone art. I would say that as long as you enjoy this aesthetic (the cover is a fairly good representation of it), you are likely to enjoy making art with it as well.
Overall, the art itself is fine but the quality of the books seems to be lacking in my copy and that's the main reason I had to take away points.
I honestly really only picked this up out of curiosity. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, especially as someone who doesn't generally collage anyway. But I do have to say that there was a moment as I was flipping through the pages where I genuinely considered actually doing so. The only problem is that I have no idea what I'd do with it afterward.
But I do have to say that I really loved the post card, book-themed, and sign-themed pages the most. Some of the artwork and designs were really beautiful and its definitely something I'd be interested in if I ever found a use for the collages.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Great for junk journaling, scrapbooking, collaging. I would definitely purchase this for myself or a crafty friend. While I haven’t actually felt the pages, the images appear to be great quality. Everything from vintage Illustrations to watercolor swatches, letters, nature, and bookish stuff. There is a great variety of color and theme in this book and probably a little bit of something for any crafter.
The pages are very pretty and I personally like to use images that are not created by AI. These feel very authentic. Thanks to Chronicle books and Roomytown for the ARC can’t wait to get my hands on the real thing and make some stuff!
This is the coolest craft idea I’ve ever seen! It’s full of all kinds of knick-knack type pictures perfect for scrapbooking or junk journaling.
My only issue is every page was yellow. That would fit with more of an “antique” vibe. I love the idea of this but if I had a physical copy (not just a digital advanced copy) I would only want to use a small handful of pages. The “antique” vibe doesn’t fit my style of crafting and journaling. More white washed and cream pages would have easily made this five stars for me.
Thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for providing me with an eARC.
This is a lovely collection of scrapbooking and journaling ephemera and images. Some of these you can easily find on Pinterest (flowers, plants and labels) but the rest are unique (animals, shells, shapes, gems etc.). I especially liked the shell and gemstone collections. There were a lot of varieties of images and backgrounds, even separate background pages. The images also have a soft sepia/vintage tone to it which is nice. I think this would be a great addition to any scrapbooker's collection.
One of my favorite art forms is collage so I couldn’t wait to get my eyes on it.
While the images weren’t particularly my style, I believe beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder. I found the colors very muted and the materials pretty common, but we all have differences in style and tastes.
I would recommend picking this up and taking a look. It is a good resource of collage material.
Disclaimer: I received a free ebook from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
What a beautiful collection! This will get you started off right if you are just getting into collage. But even an experienced collector who’s been creating for years will adore this collection of graphics. There were lots of color samples and botanicals, there were also maps, and sheet music and patterns. You won’t be disappointed. Thank you NetGalley for the review copy.
The artwork in this book is gorgeous. There are a lot of great themes throughout the book like shells, trees, nature in general but also has city maps and hobby pictures. I’ll be using for my “junk journal “.
This is a very pretty book! Probably way more useful as a print book rather than an E book but if you are looking for some very aesthetically pleasing imagery to inspire your artistic endeavors, this is a nice book for you!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC I love this, each set of images has a plain background so you don’t have to choose between them I loved the variety of images in here!
THIS IS AMAZING!!! Perfect for the junk journal girls! I will definitely be getting a copy of this since I’m only seeing the digital version from the arc via NetGalley.
Thank you to Chronicle Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
The Collage Compendium is a collection of assorted images designed for artists who enjoy building their own collages. Most of the visuals appear to be hand-drawn, and the book includes a mix of patterns, color wheels, frames, and decorative elements intended to be clipped and assembled into custom artwork.
The variety is broad, ranging from fonts to illustrated objects, providing creators with pieces to work with. While many of the pages weren’t my personal style, I did appreciate a two standout sections, like the floral pieces layered over geometric shapes and the page of shells.
