Mardi Gras is in full swing, which means the French Quarter is bustling with activity and overflowing with people. Ofelia Archer has her hands full and doesn’t need anything extra on her plate. Then the unthinkable happens. When two people seek her out, tell her trouble is coming for her, and then kill themselves, she’s thrown. What could have caused this? Magic is obviously involved, but who is wielding it? More importantly, why are they attacking now? All clues lead to an effervescent preacher in Jackson Square. She has people following her every word … and she seems to have an agenda. She also has a past in the city that goes back hundreds of years. Who is she? What does she want? And why is Pascal, Ofelia’s favorite vampire, on top of the woman’s hit list? Pascal has information, but he wants to handle the problem on his own. Ofelia isn’t keen to let that happen. He might be strong but this is the sort of magic that can destroy anyting and everyone. The clock is ticking. People are dying. Can Ofelia save Mardi Gras, or will the city fall into the sort of darkness that it can never emerge from? Strap in, because this ride is about to get deadly.
The Gillian in this book is built up as a powerful threat who is after Ophelia. As with the last few books in the series though the threat is easily dealt with in the end. Now don't get me wrong this does not make this a bad book as we get some in depth exposition at the end which is very satisfying. We also have a thread left open which may result in a new threat down the line so as I said a good book it just doesn't have the big fight at the end..................
Some excerpts from this book that made an impact on me:
"Ofelia didn’t have to ask what that one thing was. It was obvious. 'You were going to sacrifice yourself for me.' She felt sick to her stomach about it. Pascal rolled his eyes. 'Can you not take this to a melodramatic place?' 'But—' 'No.' Pascal was stern when he shook his head. 'We’re done talking about this. I did what needed to be done. I’m not sorry. I would do it again.' Ofelia flicked her eyes back to Tansy. 'Don’t look at me that way,' Tansy chided. 'I would never sacrifice myself for you and your shifter. That’s how you can be assured that we were never in any real danger.'"
That part up there actually had my eyes leaking a bit. The relationship between Ofelia and Pascal is a special one. This particular part (and some dialogue before) touched me in my heart and gave me all the feels. So sweet.
Next excerpt:
Tansy pinned him with a pointed look. 'Do you have something you want to say?' she challenged. It was obvious she didn’t like Biff. That was hardly surprising to Ofelia. She’d yet to meet anybody who liked the man on more than a professional level."
Biff is seemingly made of stone and it's hard to see his inner workings. Does he actually have feelings? My hope is that Harper Hart gives him a girlfriend in the upcoming books of this series. A girlfriend that will soften his ego and rough edges. Maybe the right girl will make him more likable and change him for the better.
The end of the fight that was inevitably going to happen in Ofelia and Sully's world was anticlimactic even to Pascal, but as they all said, it had to happen. I sorta wanted more action, but that's the beauty of all the stuff in between the beginning and end of this book. Every word had me antsy waiting for the puzzle pieces to come together to make the complete picture.
This was a terrific read! As usual. 😊 I love how Oscar is doing so well and is ok with the fact that he'll probably have a relapse. He's a sweet man in his core and I only want what's best for him... for his character anyway. I get into these books as I read them. They bring me to new lands and I get to meet new people. It's so cool.
The next book in this series will release on April 7, 2026 - The Thin Brew Line.
Some Battles are Fought with Guns but Some Can Only Be Fought with Magic.
Join Ofelia and Sully as they look forward to Mardi Gras, everything is going great until a couple kills each other in front of them and tells Ofelia it’s her turn to die. So starts another adventure only this time there is a very powerful ancient witch wanting to end Ofelia’s life and any other paranormal that might be a danger to her. I could go on and on and tell you the whole story, but that would leave you with nothing to read for the next few days. So I have decided to stop right here and recommend that you go out and get this book and read it from beginning to end, after all you wouldn’t want to miss finding out how all the other friends and paranormal are doing either, so have fun and you can thank me later;)
Out of all the series that Lily Hart does under this name, this is my favorite. I like all the characters and I love that it is set in NOLA.
Usually the bad guy goes after a family member. I was glad to see her switch it up in this book. This book hit all the right marks for me. Just enough back story, forward momentum of the characters, and all the dads, to complement and contrast Pascals roll. I won't say more as I don't want to spoil it but if you're a fan of this series you won't be disappointed in this book.
Still a fav series! An old wicked villain shows up in N’Orleans and the dynamic duo Ofelia and her charming detective fiancé, along with some supernatural support friends like her adopted father figure vampire Pascal, and human support locals have to take the baddies down, before they destroy the city and of course Mardi Gras! Can’t have that!
As with all novels of Lily Harper Hart, entertaining, energetic and action packed and an absolutely worthwhile read
I’m not one to give anything away with my reviews but I will say that I couldn’t put it down. The plot is great and well thought out. I would highly recommend this book but if you have not started at book one I would advise you to do so. You will not be disappointed and you will fall in love with the main characters as I have. If you like cozy mysteries you will love this series.
Well, we're back to the heavy smaltz from Sully especially. It just doesn't add anything for me, sorry. The ending is a bit anticlimactic based on how much they built up the witch's power and evil. There is more of both sets of parents in this one - especially Sully's dad. Fe's dad will be getting out of the hospital in the next book so that will surely be a big part of the plot. This one was just ok for me. I think the series is starting to run it's course, maybe.
This is one of my favorite series so it’s not a shock that I loved it. I also enjoy the dynamic between Fe and Pascal and he is a large part of this story. The story is intriguing and once you’re about half way through you won’t want to stop. Looking forward to the next book.
I was actually a little disappointed in this one. Perhaps there was a contractual obligation. Perhaps there were hints of story lines to come that got edited out. But then again maybe she just hit the boilerplate with this one so she could concentrate on a new story line with Felix Archer?
I enjoyed this book from the supernatural speakeasy series. Sully and Ophelia make a fun couple. Throughout the story you get caught up in their romance.Sully”s father is an interesting character and I look forward to seeing him in more books. Pascal is a favorite character and I enjoyed learning more about him. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I highly recommend this book to those who love the grit and romance of paranormal New Orleans. The complex relationships of the characters are fascinating, as well as entertaining. I am eager for more in this enthralling series.
Book 19 has New Orleans on the cusp of Mardi Gra with a new old witch causing havoc, murder, mystery, danger, and concern. Other witches seem to be the targets including Ophelia. Highly entertaining.
I so love all the books in the series by this author. Her characters are always fully thought out with such personalities that grab the readers attention. I always can wait for the next.story, anticipation is so strong.
This story line is one of my favorites. It touches n many real life things and is honest about it. Fe and sully make a great team and pascal is a wonderful second father I can’t wait to see what happens next. Loved it
This was a nice addition to the story i’m Ophelia and Zach. I did miss a nice battle between mother and daughter, hopefully there will some wedding drama in the next story. But I agree with Pascal’s disappointment.
A new evil is in town and she's after Ophelia. Innocent people are being killed. Love the series. Mystery, magic, humor and love. No cliffhanger and hea.
I really like the speakeasy series. The characters and storyline are wonderful. He is not a door mat and I like that. It’s funny that their mothers are so much alike
Totally enjoyed it! This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
The unexciting storyline was very slow to develop. Too much yada yada yada, even for this author. I've been very fond of Ophelia & crew but I guess I'm done
Ofelia and Pascal are family. They take care of each other. Sully and Ofelia are a great couple. This series is very good. Realistic characters and adventures.
Another good one bites the dust. even though the bad guy was brought out into the limelight early on, I absolutely loved the build up to the final draw.
Good addition to this series - this is one of may favorite series form this author and one of my favorite narrators. I liked seeing Pascal more, but also kind of wish we’d seen him “in action” more.
