There are a number of things that make this book stand out from "learn how to use a mixer" books.

1) An incredible focus on the nature and physics of sound itself, regardless of technology and button pushing.

2) Sharing practical advice re: the human factors of working in an audio production environment; usable stuff beyond "be nice to everyone."

3) Excellent chapter on sound design for theater (or other immersive environments imho) that includes an introduction to semiotics.

In addition, the reader learns about how to work a compressor, various ways to use EQ, how to select a mic and so on.

Written for college students but useful for anyone interested in the art as well as science and technology of sound.
