Murder, mayhem, and marinas – a mystery changing like the sea!

Washington state author Julia Shovein, after a career as a university professor of nursing now I an avid fan of global sailing and employs those experiences in her Sailing Mystery series, now three books in length, with this initial volume MURDER ON THE SQUID ROW RUN. Shovein’s skills in blending superb characters is evident as we meet the primary character in San Francisco: ‘Monday ended with a fancy chandelier exploding over my head. At least the day had started well. I met with my music agent, Max, to sign a contract he’d negotiated for me with the San Francisco Orchestra. I nailed the audition for the principal oboist position – years of hard work were paying off…Twenty-seven years old and I’d scored my dream job.’

Where that prelude takes the reader is well distilled by the author on her website: ‘Oboist Georgiana Quilter is finally hitting her stride – with a dream orchestra job and a new apartment. But when she agrees to pose as a celebrity’s girlfriend during a glamorous international sailing rally, things take a dark and deadly turn. A body shows up on board. A child disappears. A saboteur strikes. As the Squid Row Run heads from San Diego to Cobo San Lucas, Georgiana races to uncover secrets buried at sea – all while navigating a fake romance that’s becoming disastrously real.’ A beautifully scribed unique mystery that embraces suspense, adventure and romance, this is a new series that invites a wide audience to enjoy!

Impeccable Narrative!

This story has one of the most incredible plot twists I've ever read. Georgiana joins a sailing rally with her “boyfriend” in order to get her dream job... How does she do it? I find it questionable, but I don't know if circumstances force her into a series of terrifying decisions from which she has no escape.
I'll just say that everything that seems to be in this book isn't what it seems in the end. If you like stories that suddenly leave you speechless because things happen, this book is for you. Here you'll find a subtle and gentle beginning that transitions into a suspenseful plot mixed with adventure and even romance... in other words, here you'll find an exquisite combination of literary genres.
It's an entertaining book, with characters whose feelings you can identify with, impeccable narrative, and the author's incredible ability to draw you into the story! Recommended!

Great book!

The novel Murder on the Squid Row Run by Shovein is a clever and entertaining mystery story located in a lovely seaside city. The story follows an investigator who gets swept up in the small-town secrets, lies, and local drama when tragedy strikes, and the seaside run falls apart. Shovein provides readers with a compelling mystery story that provides tension and humor while showcasing a cast of spare, but colorful, eccentric characters that keep readers guessing until the end.
The atmosphere of the novel is what attracts readers into the action. Nearly every page has salty air, questionable motives, and sharp banter, and the use of all of these aspects contribute to the great tension. Told at a break-neck speed with multiple twists thrown in, Murder on the Squid Row Run is an enjoyable mixture of sharp wit and mystery that hits the mark from start to finish.

Mystery at the sea blending with romance, glamour and suspense. This book is all you need to distract yourself while enjoying an amazing suspense story. Meet Georgiana Quilter, the woman that you will see having a successful life, or that is what the author will make you believe for some time, but life is not about what appearances show; it goes beyond that, and the turbulence will come. The author’s way of conducting the book is fascinating: how she first presents reality as perfect, as majestic, but then the turns and unexpected situations on the ship will make you want to read more and more to know what is going to happen in Georgiana’s life. Her vivid and detailed descriptions will transport you onto the ship, and you will feel part of this mystery where mysterious deaths, missing children, sabotage, love, and more will whisper in your ears. It is just a fantastic novel. It is a perfect blend between romance and mystery and will be a fantastic book for anyone.

Sailing through mysteries and emotions

This book made me think about how life, much like the sea, can be unpredictable. Sometimes we believe our path is clear, but then something changes and we must adapt. I liked how the main character, Georgiana, not only faces a mystery but also her own emotions. The sea, secrets, and human relationships are connected in a very real way.

This story reminded me that, even if we cannot control everything around us, we can always choose how to respond. Sometimes, in the middle of chaos, we find clarity. What I enjoyed most was that the story does not only entertain. It also shares a quiet lesson about the importance of trusting yourself and your instincts, even when nothing feels certain. It is a simple but meaningful reminder of how we grow through challenges.

Georgiana Quilter is a woman whose life is on the rise. She has the job she always dreamed of, lives in a fabulous place, but everything falls apart in an instant, as all her hasty decisions are made. Georgiana now finds herself embroiled in a major scandal. Can she emerge unscathed from this scandal? Or will she have to pay for the mistakes of others?
I thoroughly enjoyed this read. The plot is extremely captivating, and this author knew how to blend and integrate various genres into the work. Another aspect I enjoyed was seeing the metamorphoses the characters undergo throughout the work. It's wonderful to see how they react to different situations.

It's an exciting and fast paced story that will definitely keep the reader flipping pages. It was an enjoyable book, it had mystery, danger and also some humor in between.

The author's narrative and style are really good, it really transports the reader into the characters life and experiences. Loved Georgiana’s character and all that she represents. That woman's power and the way she handles things. The story has a lot of twists and turns, and that contributes to readers' expectations built throughout the book, and the author delivered.

I'm curious to see where the story will go. Very entertaining read, no time to be distracted.

An incredible book with an amazing story that you should read right away. I loved that it mixed a bit of romance, intrigue, mystery and adventure, it really has everything I enjoy in a book that’s why I have to recommend it. The story is about a woman that gets her dream job and apartment, but when she thinks everything es perfect she got into a sailing rally that’s much more than that. In this adventure there’s a crime to solve, a love that’s confusing and a lot of mysteries that the protagonist has to solve. It is an amazing book, the written is so good that you can’t even begin to understand, read it now

Murder on the Squid Row Run by Julia Shovein is a mystery and suspense novel with an entertaining and bizarre cast of characters. The protagonist is an oboist who becomes the fake girlfriend of a celebrity during a sailing rally. But what was meant to be a fun experience turns into a murderous nightmare when a dead body turns up and a child goes missing. There is plenty of intrigue and unexpected twists to keep the plot going. For my taste the story was a bit too far out, but if you enjoy slightly absurd murder mysteries, then this is just the right book for you! I am giving it four out of five stars.

Great Book

This novel seemed truly fascinating to me: murders, investigation, mystery, and a pace that allows the reader to gradually unravel the plot while reading. All of this is possible thanks to the author’s excellent use of language and narrative style, which was one of the main factors that kept me hooked. I loved that the story allowed my imagination to run free while still surprising me with unexpected twists. It is a book that combines excitement, intrigue, and suspense in a very effective way. Overall, it is an engaging read and one that I would highly recommend.
