"Ableism is everywhere, and we cannot continue just burying our heads in the sand. To not stand up to ableism is to contribute to the exclusion and discrimination of Disabled People."
Think you know what ableism is? Think again.
Welcome to Unlearning Ableism, the book rips the lid off outdated myths, exposes the hard-hitting stats, and prepares you to be the Disability inclusive ally we know you are!
Written by people who get it, this book is a call to action from Disabled advocates and changemakers from around the world. You'll learn about language, identity, advocacy, intersectionality and how to stop disabling people at work and at home. Whether you're Disabled and ready to self-advocate or an ally who wants to do more than just talk about inclusion, this is your starting point.
Let's shake things up, challenge the status quo, and unlearn ableism together with accountability and action. Ready? Let's do this.
I would recommend this book to anyone Disabled, Ally, or otherwise, it really did do as promised and help me "unlearn abelism".
As a neurodivergent disabled person, the early chapters were a bit frustrating to me, reading things I already knew. After that though, it really ramped up. I can say confidently that this book helped me challenge and dismantle a lot of the internalized abelism that has severly impacted my mental health throughout my life.
I read it quite quickly, but would actually recommend spreading it out over a few weeks or month to allow the content to really sit in. It creates a lot of opportunities for reflection throughout your daily life, and the more time you give yourself to process, the more unlearning you can do.
Spreading it out would also help mitigate my main criticism which was that it was very repetitive. I got so tired of re-reading the same phrases that at points I ended up skimming, which I always prefer not to do.
Many thanks to the authors and I will be recommending this to others.
