In her first novel, Margaret Valiquette tells a story that begins in the era of her grandmother, passes through that of her mother, herself and on to the high-tech world of her children and grandchildren. She draws masterfully on her own experiences of historic events as well as the stories she heard as a young girl.
An intricate story of six generations of women, Threads weaves their heartache, perseverance and love for each other into a gripping journey through nearly 140 years.
In Threads, Renée Gramont’s young heart is broken by tragedy during the Franco-Prussian war. We follow this soon-to-be matriarch as she leaves the streets of Paris hoping to forget the horrors she has witnessed there. As a new immigrant to America, she finds herself empowered by learning the dressmaking trade while simultaneously threatened by the male-dominated world of the 1870s. Her marriage, while ill-fated, begins the long line of passionate women who fill the pages of Threads.
Renée’s descendants move through the worlds of dressmaking, tool design, the stock market, Jazz, winemaking, and computer technology but remain bound by the heart threads, like Ariadne’s tied to Theseus, that Renée carefully put in place to connect them through the years.
This book was a good read. Although I found it somewhat difficult to keep up with the relation of the characters in the book. Would have been better if I could have read it all at once instead of in small increments. Overall kept my interest and entertaining to read.
Trying not to be too harsh here , but ..... I am giving up the ghost .
This is one of the strangest books I have ever tried to read . Key word tried . There is NO character development . There are a million and one characters , all related . Who knows how they are related because there are way too damn many . The do absolutely nothing , but age 50 years in a paragraph . Seems plot-less ( Is that a word ? - if not it is now ! ) . Just was going nowhere , so 1/3 of the way through I am through ;-)
This story was a good read. I wanted to read it because my ancestors were from Alsace. However I felt that this story moved through generations too fast . It was difficult for me to keep track of the relationships among all the characters. I really enjoyed the descriptions of Alsace though.
