“How could anything bad happen in such a beautiful place?”
Chasing warm weather on their way to Los Angeles, Lizzy and Holly stop in the small town of Serenity, Texas. Leisurely days spent hiking and playing in the pool are just what they need after an arsonist burns Holly’s animal clinic to the ground. And Lizzy’s invitation to speak at a major writer’s convention is what she needs to conquer the fear that sent her into hiding.
What begins as a series of warm, domestic moments—shared campfire breakfasts, heartfelt conversations, and quirky escapades—gradually turns into a dangerous labyrinth of blackmail, betrayal, and murder.
Through it all, Lizzy’s spunky miniature dachshund, Mavis unearths clues and sniffs out danger in the most unpredictable ways.
The constantly shifting boundary between everyday life and illegal activity forces them to confront not only external threats but also inner turmoil. Loyalty, resilience, and determination are put to the test as they struggle to maintain a semblance of normalcy in a fractured community.
Mother of two, cat mom, and prolific reader, Alice Kanaka is the author of eight traditional mysteries, numerous short stories, and a twelve-episode collaboration with Black Knight, author of the Starshatter space opera series.

A life-long fan of the mystery genre, Alice’s books combine traditional tropes with contemporary characters to create whodunits that are simultaneously familiar and unique.
Her aspiration is to write books that she would enjoy reading; stories that are both entertaining and uplifting, perfect with a cup of Earl Grey and a roaring fire on a gloomy day.
Camping Canine finds Mavis and Lizzy along with Holly and her kitten Candy on a camping trip in an RV. Lizzy is on her way to a speaking engagement to help her conquer her fear of what she was running away from but on one of the stops, the friends get wrapped up in a mystery of murder and blackmail in a small town. I loved this cozy mystery and loved Mavis the dachshund. I like the small town settings of these books. I hope Alice Kanaka will write more adventures for Mavis the dachshund and Lizzy.
This was a fun cozy mystery. The story will pull you in and you will be flipping through the pages quickly to discover where all the clues will lead you. Lizzy and Holly’s relationship was the perfect touch of caring and support There were a lot of characters in the town of Serenity, Texas. But it was easy to keep track of them. I am in love with Lizzy’s dachshund, Mavis. He was the perfect amount of determination and the ability to get into things. Lots of twists and turns made this a fun and interesting read. I hope the author will gift us with another adventure with Lizzy and Holly and Mavis.
Thank you to NetGalley for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Mavis the miniature Daschund and Candy the white kitten join their owners on a camping trip A dead photographer and a cast of characters bring the action to life and Lizzie and her best friend Holly discover a lot of secrets in the campground they visit
I have enjoyed this series very much. And I really enjoyed this one the most so far of the series. I like that they were getting out of town and doing some travelling and I really enjoyed all of the different characters in the town where they ended up camping.
I liked especially how they got a real live Texas Ranger to come and help investigate. I have always admired the Texas Rangers; I read about them a lot in my books. The mystery itself was really intriguing and had lots of twists and turns.
The townsfolk all ended up being lovely and I really enjoyed the end of the book where they ended up having a huge party and that Liz and Holly made a lot of new friends. I hope the author will keep the books coming. I love that they give my mind someplace to wander for a while. I highly recommend.
Thanks to Net Galley, the publishers, and to Alice Kanaka for the ability to read and review this book. All opinions are completely my own and honest.
