They say that being a New Year's baby is supposed to be good luck. If luck were real, being the first person born on 01/01/01 should have made me the luckiest person alive. Instead, I'm cursed.
Felicity Sloan has just woken up on her seventeenth birthday, in the seventeenth version of her life. Never knowing where she'll end up or who will be a part of her life from year to year has really taken its toll. She still doesn't understand the rules of this twisted game, so she's keeping her head down and trying not to cause any trouble for her alter ego when she shifts into an alternate reality each year, presumably leaving the previous life behind to carry on without her.
Unfortunately, that means her life has been pretty lonely. When she finds herself in yet another new school, some particularly welcoming classmates, including super hot Devon Marshall, make her question her isolated lifestyle and consider taking a chance on risking friendships, and maybe more, despite her crazy life.
But will relationships that can only last a year be worth it? Or will the inevitable heartbreak of leaving everyone she cares about behind destroy her?
Felicity gets one year in each life because she wakes up every morning on her birthday in a different life. I loved Felicity and her adaptability despite her interesting situation. I loved how there were interwoven parts from the previous lives incorporated and without giving any spoilers away, I loved the ending.
I received an ARC of this book. I thought it was a highly original and unique story, and I really enjoyed the main character Felicity. It brought on many emotions - love, loss, happiness and sadness. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a life like this, and it was written in a way that I could connect with Felicity and understand what she was going through. Highly recommend!
This book was a quick but awesome read! I loved the chemistry between the main character and all the other characters from her friends and family to the love interest:)
imagine that every year on your birthday on the New Year, you wake up to an alternate version of your life. you're still you, you remember your previous years... but you're unsure of what you're waking up to. you go from waking up to one year having a little brother, to the next having lost him; one year your parents are happily married, another year they're divorced. it sucks, and the overwhelming grief of having loss after loss has taken its toll.
Felicity Sloan experiences what she believes is her curse. she doesn't understand why. the beginning of every year, she spends it reacclimating herself to the current version of her life only to lose it at midnight over every New Year. the emotional and mental exhaustion causes her to close herself off from everyone outside of her family. friendships and relationships aren't on her radar, because she knows it won't last. then one day, she meets Devon Marshall... and he unlocks new possibilities within Felicity that she never thought possible.
this is strictly told from Felicity's POV, and at times it feels like she's telling you the story. while a single POV isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just felt lacking here. there weren't any dimensions to the cast of characters aside from Devon. for example, you get a gist of Keisha's personality, but you have no idea what she looks like. same with Li, Tasha, and Brittany. it was hard to imagine what any of them looked like. i really wanted to know more about Brittany, since she's the closest to Felicity; and you barely know anything about Li & Tasha. instead, you're just kind of stuck in Felicity's head most of the time.
it's not a bad read at all though. i enjoyed it, i just wanted... more. something that would make it easier to immerse myself into Felicity's story rather than drown in Felicity's thoughts. it's a quick read though, so there's that. i also thought the ending wrapped up nicely and had me giddily kicking my feet.
i'd still recommend it. it's sad and heartbreaking, but it's also cute. it is a YA book, so while there are romantic scenes... it's done in a PG-13 kind of way. nothing crazy. just lots of yearning, intense make out sessions, and implications of intimacy. but no details.
thank you to the author, publisher, and Goodreads for allowing me the opportunity to receive this book from a Goodreads Giveaway. i leave this review of my own volition. all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story offers a compelling exploration of identity and self-discovery. The protagonist, a teenage girl, experiences a unique existence, waking up each New Year's Day (also her birthday) to a completely new life. She typically maintains a cautious, unnoticed presence, living in the periphery of each new reality. However, this year, she chooses to embrace friendship and love, discovering the richness and fulfillment that come with living life to the fullest. This story presents a fascinating premise for examining the impact of choices and the importance of engaging with the world around us.
I loved the originality of this story! Felicity’s yearly “reset” makes for an intriguing exploration of identity and belonging. Her risks with friendship and love is heartfelt and she pulled me right in. This was a fun read!
I absolutely loved this YA book! It left me with so many questions, and I was especially captivated by the way it weaves together different timelines of her life. Truly a compelling read!
This book gave me chills. The author wraps up the emotional arc so beautifully that I sat in silence afterward just thinking about it. One of the most memorable YA stories I’ve read this year.
