Elsa struggled with her weight for as long as she could remember, yet fortune delivered the perfect man into her life. Joe was the embodiment of all women’s tall, dark, handsome, and a little kinky in the bedroom. Best of all, he liked his women curvy. Elsa could never shake the feeling she didn’t quite deserve him but counted her blessings….until a lifetime of bad habits caught up to her. When Elsa is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, her life as she knew it was over. Would Joe stand by her side or would her new reality tear them apart?
I needed a book with a Hot Guy on Cover, and Author's Name Starts With E, to meet two book challenges. Not My Type by Emma Caruso, with some sexy posing hunk was the lucky winner in my giant TBR stack. Unfortunately, "Not My Type" was true to its title.
First of all, both characters had enough baggage to overflow the cargo deck of a C-130. Elsa is an overweight chef, recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. She has a loving boyfriend, but is very much caught up in body image issues of being the 'fat girl.' Despite an exuberant sex life, Elsa secretly doubts that boyfriend Joe finds her attractive. Joe's a personal trainer, a demi-God among men, with the physique to match. Unfortunately, Joe's also got the temper of a demi-God (I'm reminded of the legendary jealousy and temporary insanity of Hercules). Joe's been cheated on before, and he's extremely jealous and possessive. Between the two of them, there was enough drama to fill a cooking show - say, Chopped. And secondly, Joe and Elsa liked to get kinky in the sack. A little kink is nice, but maybe I'm too Ben and Jerry vanilla for bondage, spanking, asphyxiation, and sex so rough it results in vaginal bruising and bleeding.
So, yes, I had a few difficulties with this book. So why the 3-star rating? Because there were many, many elements from the book that made it rise above a 1 or 2 star rating I was very tempted to give it. These elements smacked me over the head like a 10-pound sack of confectioner's sugar when I got to the end of the book, and the author had included delicious, scrumptious recipes from the recipes that were referenced in the book. How awesomesauce is that? Then, I was reminded of the author's dedication at the beginning of the book, a big "F**k you!" to all the boys in her high school class. Yes! Then, I thought of the bat-like ears of the doggie in this book, and my heart melted. Then, I thought, yeah, Elsa and Joe are into kink, and they have more issues than an entire series run of the Dr. Phil show, but so what? They love each other, and there's an awesome HEA at the end that got televised, and the author's voice was genuine and kept me reading.
So, my tag on this is recommended, even if you think it's "not your type."
