Zaida is about to land a NYC job with a handsome, high-powered boss who'll demand far more than she expected to give, and she'll take away far more than she ever dreamed possible.
Verde used to write some pretty sexxay stuff for Harlequin back in the day, and then she dropped off the radar. I was sad.
Then I stalked her on Amazon and saw she had released a couple of quickies with another publisher. I was happy.
I should've known not to be too happy because that's when life knocks all your books out of hands on your way to math class and kicks you in the vagina. Or maybe that was my senior year in high school? I get them so confused.
Ennyway, Zaida applies for a job to be Amos Kendrick's assistant. Now, I'm always excited to hear what other assistants do in their jobs, e.g., fuck their hot bosses, and read about what perqs they get that I don't, e.g., a bazillion dollars in salary AND they get to fuck their hot boss.
Well, Zaida gets to bang the really hot boss AND she gets four weeks' vacation a year, though she just can't take it all at once because she's a lousy negotiator. She should've asked for more when she had his hot-boss peen in her mouth. EVERY assistant in EVERY book about a millionaire asshole boss knows this, Zaida! Zaida goes through some awkward questions during her interview before she finally figures out that Kendrick wants an assistant who can multi-task, e.g., straddle his lap and ride him like a bronco at the ro-day-o while setting up a conference call (pshhhhh, like THAT'S hard to do).
After all that buildup, their first time together is probably one of the least sexxy ones I've read about. Well, for me. Amos apparently liked it fine enough to shoot his hot-boss load into Zaida who kinda lay there and wondered what he did with the money...the money he should've used for fucking lessons.
They continue their affair and fun times in the office, and one day Lenga happens. Lenga the sultry Peruvian singer who used to bone Kendrick but now just needs his help with a "real estate deal," if by "real estate deal" you mean sticking her tongue all up Zaida's lady business like it's a tasty ceviche made with some red snapper and a small squeeze of lime and maybe some Corona, and I do mean that, aaaaaand now I'm hungry.
And this was after Zaida emphasized to Kendrick that she refused to sleep with clients, and that lasted negative ten seconds after Lenga started rubbing her boobies. I can't blame Zaida--I mean, who can resist a really good ceviche?
Ennyway, that was just a leedle too much vagina for me, and I would've preferred that time to be more wisely spent on getting The D, but I can't fault the author for something that's not of much interest to me. I just didn't think it added much to the story.
At first, Zaida lies to Kendrick about it, but he knows what she's done--I mean, c'mon, ceviche be pretty pungent--and they have a heartfelt talk wherein she admits she likes him best--I mean, c'mon, it's hard to beat four week's vacay and a good boning now and then.
I guess my problem with this story--besides too many womanly juices--is that I didn't feel any emotional buildup between the two protagonists. After awhile, Kendrick kinda started "dating" Zaida when they went on business trips, but I didn't feel any connection, and for me, their sexual interactions weren't all that hot.
You know a book isn't up to par when it makes your own assistant's job look great in comparison, and I only get TWO week's vacation.
Still love this author; just didn't love this book.
