This uneven, but compelling, collection is organized, for the most part, in a chronological order, from right after the levees were breached on through to more than a year after the storm. While a couple of the stories fell flat, I thought, there were more than a few that I thought very good -- the first story's apt analogy amidst gritty reality, a later one called "Apocalypse Angels" (the last line is wonderful!), and the last one about a 2nd grader. I'd be curious to know how this book reads to someone who didn't live here during all this and doesn't know these stories (or rather the details behind the stories) already.

Some great, beautiful, haunting stuff.
