Originally published in 1959 this is the story of the two-foot-gauge railroads of Maine, including the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes, the Monson, the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington, the Edaville and the Kennebec Central.
An extensive history of the largest 2-foot gauge system in the US, as well as a study of how railroads helped to build America, while at the same time demonstrating the folly of building lines that were unable to connect with the wider (4-ft, 8.5-in) standard gauge North American system.
The two-foot gauge was almost an exclusive phenomenon of Maine. In the end, the Sandy River & Rangely Lakes RR, Monson RR, Wiscassett, Waterville & Farmington RR, and Bridgeton & Harrison RR, all in Maine, were the only 2-foot common carriers in the US with any appreciable success.
This volume is the definitive exploration of those lines.
