The first devotional compiled solely from Whitefield's works and provides an excellent introduction to the spirituality of this eighteenth century evangelical. In this carefully edited edition, Randall Pederson has chosen passages based upon George Whitefield's letters and sermons that will encourage, inspire and challenge the reader each day. Bible passages are based upon the ESV.
George Whitefield, also known as George Whitfield, was an English Anglican priest who helped spread the Great Awakening in Britain and, especially, in the British North American colonies. He was one of the founders of Methodism and of the evangelical movement generally. He became perhaps the best-known preacher in Britain and America in the 18th century, and because he travelled through all of the American colonies and drew great crowds and media coverage, he was one of the most widely recognized public figures in colonial America.
As is usually the case with devotionals of this sort, some of the daily entries strike fire, while others do not. But, as is also usually the case with devotionals of this sort, the pluses far outweigh whatever minuses might be perceived on any given day. The 18th century syntax is no great obstacle to understanding, and I am grateful for the opportunity this book afforded me to obtain deeper insight to one of the great evangelical leaders of the past. Recommended to anyone with an interest in theology in general or George Whitefield in particular.
