These entertaining, educational, and colorful books help teach writing, counting, and shapes. Each book uses tactile finger tracing, an innovative new teaching technique recommended by educators. The durable board book format is perfect for young readers to use again and again.
Each letter in this book is a groove cut into the page, with a big dot drawn inside the groove to indicate where to start, and a line of smaller dots indicating where to go from there. The big-little dots are just like you would find on your kindergartener's workbook page, for them to trace with a pencil.
Using a physical groove allows smaller children (like my 1 year old) to truly get a "feel" for what each letter is like. When he's a little older, he will be able to start at the big dot and trace around the letter. Then, when he's old enough to write and trace with a pencil, he'll already be familiar with the forms of the letters.
WHY I LOVE IT: My son enjoys the variety of colors and shapes. He loves feeling the little letter-grooves just as much as he enjoys his other touch-and-feel books, even though this one doesn't have any special textures like fur or bumps. His favorite picture is
the only one I wish wasn't in the book: the insect (simply because we never use the word insect in everyday language... we have BUGS around this house!) But that illustration, like all the others, is cute and captures his attention whenever he sees this book.
I highly recommend this as a first-birthday gift; in fact, I would be tempted to give it even as a baby shower gift. Sure, a 3 month old won't do much with it, but I've had ours for 6 months and my son has always liked looking at it even before he was coordinated enough to trace the grooves.
