"The characters aren’t just well written, they’re the kind you root for, cry over, and occasionally yell at in frustration."
"Flee the Dawn is a fast-paced, action packed high fantasy that is perfect for fans of John Gwynne and James Islington. The build up to the life changing events are enthralling and page turning, making it hard to put down."
In a world where rivals can incinerate him with a snap of their fingers, Lukas is forced to make a submit to the light or embrace the shadows to escape the burning dawn.
Lukas Musgrave has no magic, no noble blood, and no business dreaming of joining the Lumina Solis, the empire’s elite fighting force. After leaving his quiet village behind, he quickly finds a world steeped in corruption, where scheming nobles wield fire magic and power is everything.
His only chance to prove himself lies in the Ascension Exams, a brutal arena tournament where recruits fight to the death, cheered on by a bloodthirsty crowd. Armed with nothing but brooding companions, foolish optimism and a lifetime of training, Lukas must face monstrous foes, gruelling trials, and rivals who can incinerate him with a snap of their fingers.
But the greatest threat may come from within. An inner darkness stirs, threatening to consume him. Beneath the suffocating sun of Ferlandia, Lukas is forced to make a submit to the light or embrace the shadows to escape the burning dawn.
I thoroughly enjoyed Flee the Dawn by SA Hopkinson - it presents a captivating new world of magic. The world building is woven into the narrative, so I felt I was learning and discovering alongside the main characters, which kept the story fast-paced.
The training sequences leading up to the trials are exciting, providing a strong sense of progression, and the fight scenes are vividly written and highly entertaining. I especially appreciated the development of friendships throughout the story, the evolving dynamics and emotional depth added to the authenticity of the story as the characters navigate their world and try to find their place within it.
A great read from the build up to the trials right through to the end leaving you wanting more. Looking forward to the next edition and where the story goes next!
