Both volumes of this anthology series were pretty good and made for some decent, if not exemplary, yuri content. Heck, the first one here is easily the best story in both volumes.
It concerns a pair of very good friends, one of whom is about to get a boyfriend and another who is very nearly coded as aromantic. Some light teasing unlocks some hidden feelings and things go from there.
This one’s a lot of fun and the way the two women come together as they realize that neither one of them is being quite as jokey as they should be is great. I had a good chuckle at the fate of the boyfriend too.
The second pairing is my least favourite, but is kept mercifully more chaste than it first appeared. A 15 year old who has learned her very capable habits from a former maid finds out that said maid is far less put together than advertised.
It’s not strictly a romance, thank god, since the maid is 23 years old, but more of a commentary on book learning versus life experience. The 15 year old veers a little close to ridiculously sheltered and the whole thing wraps up on a pachinko gag. Not my fave.
The third couple is another solid pairing, a 20 year old college student who tries to show off her worldly ways with her 18 year old neighbour. Except the 18 year old takes the bait and turns out to be far more skilled at taking the lead too.
This pairing is a lot of fun because they’re also really getting into this, albeit not entirely. The way the older woman has to eschew every possible contact because she assumes that it’ll all end in sex is really amusing.
It’s a decent premise with a not-unreasonable age gap that actually handles it like a properly rational response and then makes a joke about how damn thirsty these two are. That’s my kind of story.
The last one is an okay, but not great, tale of a take-charge type who meets a delicate girl who turns out to be rather less delicate than advertised. That’s pretty much it. Fine, but not especially memorable.
Then the whole thing wraps up with some ‘afterwards’ chapters that show where things end up. They’re inessential but add a little extra - these have the characters from all the stories interact a bit, which is cute.
There’s also a fairly steamy sex scene, which happens to be between the couple that you’d expect to make the most of it. And they do.
I have definitely read worse yuri anthologies and, given how bad some of them have been, that’s definitely a compliment. The maid one is a bit of a dud, but one mediocre and two great ones is a strong batting average.
