Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher Chronicle Books, and the author Erik Ireland for providing me with a digital advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was drawn to "Awaken Your Myth: 6 Steps to Discover a Life of Peace and Purpose" because of its title, description and that it is a publication of Chronicle Books, whose titles I’ve often enjoyed. While the digital watermarking in my copy made reading a bit more challenging than expected, the content itself made it worth the effort.
The book builds on ideas from Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung. Readers new to these frameworks will likely find them eye-opening, while those already familiar may recognize the foundation but still appreciate how Ireland brings these ideas into a modern, accessible context.
This is not a quick read—and that’s part of its strength. The book encourages you to slow down, reflect, and engage. I especially appreciated the journaling prompts, mindfulness practices, and breathwork, which give the book a grounded, experiential quality. It works best when approached as something to practice, not just read.
Some of the author’s personal stories felt longer than necessary for my taste, but I can see how they add depth and relatability for many readers. Where the book truly shines is in its ability to guide readers through self-reflection and meaning-making, especially during times of transition or uncertainty.
I can see this resonating strongly with readers in their 20s and 30s, as well as those drawn to yoga, mindfulness, and myth-based personal growth. While a few elements may feel a bit “woo” to some, they are balanced by thoughtful structure and practical reflection exercises.
Overall, I found this to be a meaningful and engaging read. I plan to revisit it, likely in Kindle format, to work more intentionally through the exercises at a slower pace.
This book came out at the right time for me. I’m focusing more on my personal journey and finding my own truths. Each step is making me delve deeper and challenge my own thoughts and beliefs. The book also helps me process of figuring out what I want to achieve.
