The reigning King of Wallachia, Vlad III, is not your average ruler. He has a darkness inside...one that must never be revealed. Not even to his closest allies. Vlad's secrets threaten to surface when the forbidden book of magic is stolen. Now he must put those he loves in danger to recover the ancient book before it can be used to seed the land with more of the undead...vampires just like him. Hidden codes are revealed, trusted allies are interwoven with bitter adversaries in this race against time with the future of the world at stake.
This is the third book in the series about Vlad Teppes, the origin of the Dracula myth. Vlad has eliminated the threat to his kingdom by killing King Stephen and the six vampire kings. He is looking forward to his upcoming coronation as King Vlad III of Wallachia and then his wedding to his beloved Helena. But can his happiness last? His brother, Radu, brings him the bad news that the forbidden book, the one that was used to transform the six kings into vampires, has been stolen by Queen Anna Beth Bathory, wife and consort to King Stephen. Vlad quickly realizes that to protect his kingdom and his family, he must get that book back and so they set off on their dire mission. The author in this story uses enough historical data to keep the story interesting (and familiar) and inserts his own twists into the story. I liked the brief introduction of Elizabeth Bathory, known as the Blood Countess. I really appreciated the portrayal of Vlad as a more sympathetic character, one trying to do the best in a bad situation while remaining true to himself. There is a touch of innocence and naivete in his actions that actually endears him to the reader, making the tragedies that he endures all the more sad. In order to appreciate this series of three books, they should be read in order. Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Book 3 in the series does not disappoint and is my favorite of the series. Jackson Stein has taken an old familiar trope and turned it into something new-very well done. In this book, our favorite vampire Vlad is on the verge of happiness ...or is he... the story starts strong and never lets you go, the writing is tight and just when I thought I knew what would happen, I didn't! There are some very scary parts and some very good storytelling. The entire series is better than good and should be on every vampire fan's bookshelf. Highly recommend. I was given a copy of the book-the opinion is my own.
As with the first two book in this series, this one is just as good as they were. It keeps you turning pages as fast as you can and keeps you in suspense to the very end. You don't want to miss this one.
I received an e-ARC of this book for free from the Author in exchange for an honest review.
finally the last of the 3 part series. it is open-ended but I'm not left wanting to know more. It was a quick read and I'm thankful for that because I'm so done with Vlad III's inner monologue
