My Dad is not my father. Never mind that my Mom and Dad have been married for years longer than I've been alive, or that my biological father and his wife have been married for almost as long, because I have no idea how any of that went down. What I do know, is that it doesn't add up.
I didn't tell them that I knew. I'd overheard a conversation that made it sound like it would be dangerous for me to be Matt's daughter. So I kept my mouth shut, and tried to enjoy the happy little family that my parents had tried to ensure I'd have.
Except... Dad got a new job and travelled a lot. He only comes home every couple of months now. And his job wasn't the safest around, either. I no longer had the safe, normal life my parents had intended for me. The happy family bubble had burst.
So, since whatever deal that had been made appeared to be broken, I decided to reach out to my biological father and try to have a relationship, while still playing the game of pretending not to know the truth. I had a plan to play on their fears for me. They were afraid I was going to get hurt by someone if my true parentage was found out. So the best way to appeal to Matt, as far as I could figure, was to approach him and ask for help in learning some self-defense. And once that door was opened, maybe I could get to know the rest of his family too.
Matt never considered turning me away when I reached out to him, but being around him came with strings. Lots of strings, all designed to keep me safe and hide the secret. And then one day, as I was on my way home, I got snatched. They said they kidnapped me because they wanted to draw my father out.
My problem? I don't know which father they're after, and I can't open my mouth and say anything because I don't know who's safe to be related to and who's not.
This book was nothing what I was expecting. Thought it was going to be a romance type book. Boy, was I surprised. It was great. Maddie was a breath of fresh air. So mature for her age, taking things with stride, thinks before she acts...now you are thinking fairytale genre. What teenager acts like that? Plot was very unique. The characters built up as the story continued and the pieces fell in place, the ending was fitting to the story. So maybe this was a romance genre ending with the happily ever after. All I know I enjoyed reading this book.
Fav quotes "He had a guard with him," she said with a shrug, as though having your seven-year-old guarded was normal. But then again, I bet most mothers wished they could have their seven-year-olds guarded.
The hits just keep coming from this awesome writer. 2nd book I'v read and now onto #3. If your looking for a new book to read, this is it!! Mddie overhears a secret at 10 yrs old. This secret changes her life. Maddie show such excellent maturity into her family situation.
Humorous and serious, I love the storyline. If I thought it could be done, I’d love to see a series from it. My favorite line, the one that had me howling: "Don't let her sleep in the lacy room, Mommy! She'll hack it to pieces!"
Even though I like O. L. Gregory' writing, I wasn't really sure about this one. I opened it about 10 p. m. and was surprised to see it was 3:15 a. m. when I finished it. Another of the can't bear to put it down books. Keep writing like this and you will become the favorite.
